- San Petersburgo, denominada como "La capital cultural de Rusia", es la segunda ciudad rusa en importancia y población. Está situada en el noroeste del país, en la costa del mar Báltico. Fue fundada en 1703 al reconquistar Rusia la salida al mar de Suecia bajo el reinado de Pedro el Grande, quien así reforzó la presencia de Rusia en esa región, abriendo al mismo tiempo una “ventana a Europa”.
Ciudad bella como pocas, aunque parece salida de un ancestral libro de cuentos de hadas, San Petersburgo no tiene su origen desde hace miles de años, como otras ciudades europeas, sino que fue fundada en el siglo XVIII, durante el reinado del zar Pedro el Grande (1672-1725).
Para el desarrollo de la ciudad, el emperador Pedro I se inspiró en Venecia prohibiendo los puentes permanentes sobre el río Neva para que se asemejara al "Gran Canal" y también se inspiró en Ámsterdam, promoviendo la construcción de canales en las calles.
Desde la puesta en marcha del proyecto, los arquitectos e ingenieros más valiosos se involucraron con los rusos en el desarrollo de la ciudad, dejando ahí sus huellas arquitectónicas representantes de Suiza, Italia, Francia y otros países, por lo que se puede apreciar la influencia de la arquitectura italiana en el siglo XVIII y en menor grado de la francesa.
En San Petersburgo se construyó un gran número de monumentos y conjuntos de arquitectura barroca y neoclásica, habiendo sido designado el centro histórico de la ciudad "Patrimonio de la Humanidad por la UNESCO".
La ciudad cambió de nombre varias veces. 1º se llamó Petrogrado, para darle un nombre ruso y más patriótica al entrar Rusia en 1914 en la Primera Guerra Mundial y luchar contra Alemania. En 1918 perdió su estatus capitalino y, poco más tarde, en 1924 recibió el nombre de Leningrado, en honor al jefe revolucionario Vladímir Lenin. La Segunda Guerra Mundial fue un tiempo de severo sufrimiento para la ciudad, que se vio sitiada por las fuerzas armadas de la Alemania nazi durante 29 meses. Tras concluir la guerra, la ciudad creció considerablemente gracias al aumento de la población y la construcción de nuevas viviendas. En 1991, y tras un plebiscito, se volvió a llamar "San Petersburgo".
San Petersburgo también inspiró a muchas célebres figuras nacionales de la poesía y la prosa que vivieron en la ciudad. El joven Alexandr Pushkin se convirtió, en opinión de muchos, en el máximo poeta nacional y el padre de la literatura rusa contemporánea. Sus obras se han traducido a los principales idiomas del mundo, así como las de Fiódor Dostoyevski, a quien suele catalogarse entre los mejores novelistas de la historia.
El Museo del Hermitage (3:41) ubicado en el centro de la ciudad, está considerado uno de los mayores museos y pinacotecas del mundo. Cuenta con unas tres millones de piezas de arte que se exponen en más de 400 salas.
