My great-aunt (rest in peace, Auntie Madeline) used to have a red 1980 Malibu Classic sedan. Rosebud, we called her.

I had a similar 1982 Buick Regal Limited Sedan..charcoal gray paint, wire wheel covers, and a light gray interior (loose cushion upholstery) with black instrument panel.

I graduated in high school from Mount Lebanon Pennsylvania and went to Robert Morris University for one year and couldn't stand it and my passion was always cars and I got a job at Batey Chevrolet in Carnegie PA.
I absolutely loved selling cars and in 1980 I made $22,000 all Commission and then from there I went to McMinn Oldsmobile in Dormont PA Mr McMinn was the general manager of Rohrich Cadillac in Pittsburgh I knew him from my own business as a teenager

We had a 1980 Malibu Classic Wagon when I was growing up. It had a 231 Buick V-6. In 1995 my father sold it to a local family with almost 200,000 miles on the clock and almost 15 years of trouble free miles. I remember the Malibu had one of the quietist, and smoothest rides available on comfortable seats. The crap they sell today has no comfort like these cars had. The Malibu was very well built, and I still see our old Chevy Malibu roaming the streets today. By now I suspect the mileage on the clock is probably closer to 400,000 miles or even more. I miss that car.

Fremont Assembly was notoriously bad... so bad that GM shut it down in the early 1980s.

Our 1980 Malibu Classic Wagon came from the Arlington Texas GM assembly plant.

@@SpockvsMcCoy It was closed in 1982, then reopened in 1984 as a joint venture with Toyota. The fruits of the latter were the Toyota Corolla "Nova" later rebranded to Geo Prizm, as well as US market Corollas. Our family actually had a 1975 GMC 3/4 ton from 1980 until six weeks ago, that was assembled in Fremont. It was one of the most reliable trucks I've encountered, only succumbing to the rust that plagued early Squarebodies. All original powertrain, though the engine was very, very tired in its last years. If not for the rust, it would've been worth a restore... but we ended up relegating it to dump runs and eternal second vehicle beater duty. It technically never died, but the left bed side was threatening to get torn off by the wind, and the driver's door was ready to fall off of the extremely rotted cab/cowl/A-pillar. So, once in awhile, they must have got one right.

We had a 78 with the 200 V6. Allegedly 95hp. Got outrun going uphill from a start by a Yugo whose driver wasn't even trying and he don't know I had it floored.

I wish I could still go down to my Chevy dealer and buy one of these brand new, instead of these ugly mommy wagons they sell.

Those Malibu sedans looked so good with the 6 windows. When they changed to the formal roof for 1981, it took away from the car's good looks a bit. Still nice but....

The back door windows didn’t roll down on 4 door or wagon. Pulling that jet boat with the big hero 305 2 barrel is optimistic

When I was 11-years-old, my dad bought the sedan. Surprising how GM cut costs by using fixed windows for the rear doors. Those vent windows didn’t help much. On hot days, my dad kept the A/C on low and pointed the vents toward him. But that’s another story. These videos though bring back a lot of memories.

@@lance7973 My dad's cousin had a wagon version of these and I completely agree with you. We used to travel a couple of times in that wagon and it was frustrating that the back door windows didn't roll down in comparrison to modern cars, the back door windows roll all the way down.

At age 5. I absorbed my father's hatred for what these symbolized..unfortunately they were the harbinger of where we are today.

Just being inquisitive, what exactly did they symbolize to you/him? The downsizing?

Had one as a company car. I liked it so much that I took really good care of it. Oil changes at 5,000 miles, drove it gently, etc.
Then the camshaft went south (soft lobe or two). The leasing company bought it back rather than repair it. Next car was a Pontiac Phoenix. The most blah car I ever drove.
I thought the 79-80 Malibu would be the next '55 Chevy for hot rodders. I was wrong.

Next 55? Eh not quite. But still has a massive following for customization in my opinion
