I don't know who invented the unicorn cake but all I can say is that everyone does it their own way and they are all beautiful my hats off to all of you who make beautiful creations and makes us all happy
My friend asked me to make a unicorn cake for her daughter's birthday! I love making cakes but this was a new one for me - your tutorial was very helpful! I tried making the horn two ways and the way you demonstrated with the two "carrots" worked perfectly! Great tutorial - I had a lot of fun making this cake! :)
Thank you for sharing your lovely video. My daughter - in - law just asked me to make a “Princess Unicorn” for my Granddaughter’s First Birthday! I’ve watched several videos about unicorn cakes and your’s most direct and loveliest. I’m just need to add a fondant gold Crown or tiara to the front of the unicorn’s horn.
Rosie, again, a great tutorial. Don't worry about the "fad" going by. There will always be plenty of little girls (and we older ones, lol) who still love unicorns!
I love this cake and will be making it for my daughter's birthday in a couple days. How much buttercream does your recipe make? How much us used for the cake and how much for the flowers? I would like to make the buttercream ahead of time and I know we need to add the color now before refrigerating. Thank you for your help.
Hi Stephanie, thank you for your comment :) I What size cake will you be making for your daughters birthday? If the size is 6 inches round, I would recommend the following recipe: 200 grams unsalted butter 200 grams vegetable shortening (or more butter if you cant find this) 800 grams icing sugar 1 teaspoon vanilla extract 1 to 2 tablespoons milk (depending on the consistency) this should fill and frost your cake with enough to spare for piping :)
Nice cake, I am a beginner, do you have any recipe for the frosting, pls? It looks amazing, so smooth and good-shaped.. Is it kind of buttercream or swiss creame? Thanks a lot 😊😊
Wow! This looks great! I want to create a watercolour style cake for my daughter's birthday and I wondered if you would be able to recommend a bench scraper to smooth the icing. A lot I find online are only 6 inches tall and I worry that isn't tall enough for bigger cakes.
This might be a dumb question but, do you also refrigerate the buttercream while you put the cake with the first layer into the refrigerator for 20 min or do you just leave it out?
I love this and am making it for a friend's child. How do you keep the fondant decorations from "rehydrating" and softening on the buttercream? my ears and eyes drooped. I was planning to pipe the eyes with frosting anyway, so i had practiced with the fondant ahead of time to see if it stayed hard.
Hi hun, does this droopiness happen after the cake was refrigerated? It might help to add in some tylose powder and to keep the cake in a box with a lid when popping it into the fridge so condensation doesn't get to it.
thanks so much for your reply. Mine happened sitting over night on buttercream not refrigerated. I set it up that way on purpose to see if it would happen because I knew it was likely. I knew fondant would get wet in the fridge. I realized i had looked up the tylose thing before, but in lieu of that I had already purchased gum paste and forgot about it. So far the gum paste has worked well. I am in alabama so the humidity is also awful. This cake is for someone other than my group of friends so I am more concerned about it lasting. I am going to deliver it just before the party and give them the horn to insert when they get to the venue. I don't work with fondant much. The one time I tried to make some (marshmallow version) it stayed so soft i could not get it cleanly applied to cover a cake because it kept stretching. Every cake I do is practice for new things. I am glad I got to work with gum paste and all these online videos are so helpful. I will come back for more tips on your videos.
Hi rosie I love all ur cake videos.. For this unicorn cake can I use Swiss butter cream? Can I store the crumb coated cake for 24 hours in refrigerator?does it affect the quality of the cake?
Hi Lila, thanks for your comment! No such thing as a silly question :) So for this cake you wouldn't really need a any dowels. Dowels would normally be used in 1 tier cakes if the cake is super tall. They would help the cake to remain straight instead of becoming lopsided. It would add stability to your cake in that case. Since this case is just tall, but not super tall, you can go without the dowels.
Rosie's Dessert Spot thank you so much Rosie for your help looking forward to your new creations have a nice weekend!! I will bake my cake and go without the dowels thanks!!! 😁
Hi hun, thank you for your lovely comment! If you need one I can definitely custom order one for you. Although you can literally make this very easily by cutting a long thin rectangle and then much shorter rectangles and lining them up with the larger one (so the long rectangle is the eye and the smaller rectangles make up the eyelashes).
Thank you so much Rosie! I appreciate your help :) I will try the tips you suggested above, if it doesnt work I'll order one from you :) Thanks again so much for your help.
Can I ask how do you store this cake before the party? and also how thick is your buttercream, does it have to be thick to stick on the side of the cake? how does it not melt down and loose it's shape?
Hi Tanya, I would normally pop this in the fridge in a box. A cake box where the lid can close completely is best. The buttercream recipe that I use is American Buttercream, which crusts over time. If you are in a very warm climate, then it might be a little on the soft side, but the frosting is actually pretty firm so it shouldn't meld down per se :)
can we use a black forest sponge and filling, and then use this icing for decoration? i am afraid that the cake might sit from the mane’s side. Please answer.
thank you for your comment :) I made the eyelash cutters myself, but you can just cut one long strip of fondant for the eye and small parts for the eyelashes, always from the same strip so it's identical in thickness.
Hi, did you refrigerate horn and ears (fondant). I'm making a gluten free version and was wondering if they would wiltter- or buckle, like when fondant goes in fridge
@@rahulbachupalli3714 You have to put a wad of Icing between the Cake and Cake board to keep it from slipping all over the board. It will prevent it from sliding off. I refrigerate the cake once I put on a Crumb Coat.
Thanks so much for sharing your amazing skills. I come from a family of bakers, I can bake about anything and it'll taste amazing, but for the love of God I cannot decorate. Lol. I will do my best to decorate a unicorn cake for my daughter following your video.
I want to make this for my daugther one day before her birthday, can i decorate the cake With the butter crème one day before? And can i save it in the fridge?
Where did you get the fondant or did you make it and I only have a saptula to smooth the cake I dont have a scraper would I still be able to get the same amount of refinses smoothness without a scraper?
Hi hun, I use Bakels fondant (I don't make my own, that's a lot of work haha). In all honesty, I can never seem to get smooth and crispy clean edges with just a spatula- A bench scraper tool is the best for this- but if you can't seem to find one, using a ruler actually works a charm too. I would recommend the triangle / right angle rulers so the scraper has a base to rest on the cake board and keeps things straight.
Holly P I think the reason for alcohol based liquid is the drying time. extract or vodka will dry really quick and not run. Water. might not blend with the powder as well, either. Hope this helps. 😊
Hi Rosie, I am so scared to try icing the cake, do you think if I use white fondant that would look good ? Also if I do 4 tiers 7 inches cake, do you think can serve 24 children ? Thanks x
Hi Rita, I like to use the hybrid buttercream frosting, it works wonders for straight edges and is so creamy and easy to use: ua-cam.com/video/elxRoPGOBPQ/v-deo.html
Hello I am a new subscriber! I wanted to know about the zoom classes you are going to take which popped up on my FB page but I can’t find it.. I wanted to know more about the class?
Just made it! But sadly the cake starts to sink to the side, I think it was because of the weight of buttercream. What do you think it went wrong? The cake was a "purple" velvet, maybe the consistency was too light for the weight.
Hi hun, sorry to hear :( normally buttercream cakes that have a lot of detail (And weight) are best done on mud cakes and dense, butter based cakes. You are definitely on the right track, if your cake is a soft, super moist or super airy sponge, then buttercream would definitely have been one of the factors causing the cake to sink.

Very cute! Unicorn cakes are fun to make and eat!
Brilliant but can you tell me where to buy the piping nozzle and the size please thank you x
Rosanna Pansino didnt invent the idea. The idea was made in 2016 by someone else. It's not copying, it's just popular.

How much buttercream did you use for the entire cake?
Do u refrigerate your cakes before frosting them I have such a hard time icing cakes it moves around too much
