Spirit reminds me of my daughter as a baby. If she was hangry, she'd scream & cry even when there was a breast or bottle clenched in her fists🤣 I completely empathize with Jackie & Shadow, only I didn't get to fly away.

Ah, from the safety of nest, she knew her meal would not be lost. 😋I like the way Shadow hopped away behind her, avoiding the ankle bites he knew were sure to come. Then after she enjoyed her meal and got too close to him on the porch, screaming at him, he hopped up out of her reach. Smart daddy. 😌naughty daughter 😒
Princess Spirit is not a naughty daughter! She is learning survival skills that are needed for her to thrive! Her behavior is learned from what Mama Jackie and Papa Shadow are teaching her. 💞

Poor Spirit. Saw this live this morning. I think she was so hungry after all that looking for the one she dropped in the RT earlier (see Cali's "Life Lessons" video from today) and maybe hadn't eaten since day before. Her flying and landing skills are getting so good! Shadow is learning to drop the fish and immediately get his talons out of her way -- lol! Our little girl seems to be developing nicely. Love her J&S so much!

All the drama and ferocity is part of getting ready and practicing for when her real opponents - other competing eagles - won't be so gracious as to step out of the way! She's excelling at this, as she has with every other milestone.

I've been watching several bald eagle nests for a while now & I can't recall any eaglet coming close to the volume & amount of shrees than Spirit's. Is she unusually alot more vocal & demanding than the average eaglet?
yeah she's intense, the other eagles aren't quite as agressive and loud.
Legacy, Samson and Gabby’s chick from 2021 was pretty loud and sassy. She was an only chick, too.

Just a question. Spirit's eyesight must be very good to have seen the fish in Shadow's talon. Could it be that Spirit also has seen Daddy pluck the fish out of the water?? Are we watching the "fish catching" training for Spirit??
Daddy has been a major fish "bringer". So Spirit may have learned to watch HIM to see if he's bringing a fish.
Will Spirit be led to the lake eventually to watch Shadow (and/or Jackie) catch a fish?? Is that how Spirit learns to catch her own fish?

I would imagine that she does follow them and gets to watch and learn. They won't always bring food to her - she'll figure that out soon enough.
Thank you, carmen martinez. Since the camera is unable to closely view what happens at the lake, I've had to guess at how Spirit would be taught to fish. The video showed her noticing Shadow & racing to him. I don't see the fish in his talon. But she must. Shadow must be using the fish to teach her to follow him.
In time Spirit will learn to follow him to the lake & watch him catch fish (i.e. learn to fish by observation).
I'm a retired elementary school teacher. It's fascinating to know how Spirit might learn to fish. Also, there might be a variety of ways. But the key skill is the xlnt eyesight, I believe. Enjoy!

Hi maricela48! Thank you for your reply! It was one I hadn't imagined.
But it makes sense in nature. I didn't see evidence in the videos of Spirit ever responding to a parent's call. They are so solitary in flight. But that just might happen at some point in Spirit's learning. Jackie calls Shadow. Shadow & Jackie calling Spirit might be the learning to get Spirit to follow them to the lake to learn to fish. It would be learned behavior, not instinct. Cali talked about Spirit exploring making many different sounds. Then she would have to learn the meaning of sounds from her parents, I'm guessing.
Cali also mentioned the eaglets use trial & error in learning.

It seems Shadow is a bit scared of her trying to get out of the way of her beak grabbing his talons, she is quite aggressive, I won’t why she attacks his feet? I mean she has got the fish, poor Shadow, bites the hand ‘talon’ that feeds her.

I just love her squees - she’s real funny and a force to be reckoned with. Maybe she can eventually hook up with Sky from west end who is real mellow and not very chatty - opposites attract 😆

Spirit is like a nightmare. Shadow is so patient with his daughter. I feel he is not going to parent any more eaglets.
What a messy nest
Jackie and Shadow need to teach Spirit some manners some life lessons… She's very greedy and steals their food they need to wing slap on the nest to teach her to wait her turn or I hope this doesn't become a problem when she grows up and if she tries to steal somebody else's food that could cause her to get into a fight with another eagle😳
That's how juvenile eagles survive their 1st year, until they hone their hunting skills
Eagles are apex predators and scavengers. There are no manners or good behavior. Their instinct is to eat and will steal anything to ensure their survival, including plucking live chics from other bird nests. Spirit needs to be aggressive. These are wild animals, not humans.
Typical spoiled teenager. At that age my parents would have said if you don't like it find your own damn food!
I see a shift from pure food aggression a few weeks ago to now: initial loud squee and posturing/guarding food, taking first bites, then quickly moving to softer, almost cooing vocalizations to parent. Hanging with mom and pops, even sounding thankful.
@@mjanemoore2617 In any case, we are privileged to be able to watch something that has been happening for well over 100,000 yrs and probably a whole lot more. But no doubt Spirit is a unthankful teenager. Hopefully she'll treat her young'ns as well as her parents.
