Imo all of the English dub voices suck soooooo bad the inflections on Franky are a bit better thanntoejr characters but damn do they all sound not fitting
As a manga reader only before I always had imagined a voice for all characters when I read the panels. When I watched One Piece in Japanese I just couldn't get used to Franky's voice. However the moment I heard this guy's voice, I was like "hell yea this is it!" it's SUUPPEEEERRRRRR.
Think Franky might be one of my top three favorite Straw Hats. His recruitment was hilarious, both his English and Japanese voice actors are amazing, and he just has that perfect balance of genius/comedic/hardcore.

IMO, I think Franky had the most gut-wrenching experience of all the Straw Hat Pirates physically, mentally, and emotionally. I can say this because his background story was the only one of all nine of the Straw Hats that made tears fall out of my eyes. Now Don't get me wrong, Nami's, Chopper's, and Robin's background story were gut-wrenching as well and almost got me to drop a tear or two, but when Franky stood on that water-train track, crying for Tom to come back and willing to lose his life getting struck by that fast-moving train.... Oh Dear God, Let's just say only one other "moment" in One Piece had me crying more than I did at that scene.
Ace Solomon god yes, dude got run over by a train trying to get his master back and then turned himself into a cyborg one piece at a time. That means he did the surgery all by himself. Imagine him cutting himself open tearing everything out and replacing everything...
I like both the Japanese and English voices for every one of the Strawhats, but Franky is one of the ones where I like his English voice more. It just fits the character so well.
I dont hate this... I think it fits Franky's character.... if they tried to match his Jp voice it might sound too...fake or off... Imagine Jango's english voice coming out of Franky, or even Mr. 2...since theyre the same in Japan...
Patrick is awesome! I got to meet him at naka kon earlier this year, and he enjoys talking with his fans. He's a really cool guy, hope to meet him again!

Because honestly, you wouldn't expect his OG voice from your first look at him, but only after a while realize how perfect it fits. So, I'll wait and see what they do.

I don't hate FUNimation, but it bugs me they didn't even try to pick voices similar to the subs. Franky and Zoro have much more awesome voices in sub. No disrespect to the dub actors of course. SUPER!
I'm sure they try for most roles, but in most cases (maybe all of them), they have to get approval from the Japanese (Toei, usually, and maybe even the creator, like in One Piece's case) so even if they got a person that sounded exactly how their Japanese counterpart would sound like had they spoken perfect, fluent English in an American accent, the Japanese could always reject that voice. One Piece specifically, had very meticulous voice analyzing when it came to auditions (5-10, as opposed to their usual 1 in FUNi in their other shows) and all the specifics in how a voice may sound. Higher pitch, gruffer, "crazier", etc. I could link you a specific vid of Chopper and Eneru's VAs talking about their auditions and stuff like that. So it's really not like they didn't try to pick voices similar to the sub, it's more like even if they did, the final result is not up to them. All they really do is pick their best choices and then the Japanese have the final say. If it sounds like I'm trying to make you feel bad or feel stupid or something with this super long reply, I'm just trying to give a proper explanation about why they didn't do whatever they didn't do.
Didn't come across as hostile or nothing, no. I get what you're saying. Part of it for me I guess is that I develop a bit a bias cause I've watched the subs for so long that any one else sounds weird.

Like, "Why do they sound so totally different?" after watching a sub then dub of an anime. It's kind of startling, but after a while, I eventually gained an understanding of why. Unless they were simply a bad dub.
Probably the most underrated English Straw Hat voice. He put so much gusto, hamminess and force into Franky. Easily one of his best roles.
