Years before he died, my grandfather had his lawyer put a contingency in his will & testament
that his estate could not be distributed unless we played 3 songs he had picked out during the funeral service, AND required that his immediate family members stood up & sang along
    *without any prior announcement*
The faces in the crowd while I was up there hollering the lyrics to “Six Foot Down” by Gene Ski without any context like it was some sort of backwoods partridge family reunion was exactly what I needed to get through that week.
I miss that old fucker. he always had a way of hitting you with what you need when you least expected it.😂

The scams in the funeral industry are INSANE! Like did you know funeral homes make it seem like embalming is legally required (it isn't in most places) and that you need a nice big plot to bury the body but in many places you can bury grandma in your yard and you can dump a body anywhere in international waters.

    • @Scarshadow666

Though if Tugg ever goes into talking about all the ridiculous overpriced things that can go on in some parts of the funeral industry, then he should collaborate with the Ask a Mortician channel (a channel that's really educational about how the funeral industry works btw - definitely recommend people check it out). ^^

In Ireland we drink and celebrate the life of people who have passed. Wakes usually last 2-3 days, filled with people laughing, sharing stories and drinking. A funeral is a 6hr affair from service to "after party" 😅 a lot of us end up in the pub the rest of the night, toasting to the fallen ❤

When I was in elementary school, one of my grandparents died. I was feeling overwhelmed by all of the strangers talking to me in the line, so I sat off to the side with another grandparent to take a minute. In a moment I will NEVER forget, a man *slides* up to me and my grandmother, announces, "Hello there! I'm Nicolas the Ridiculous!", and then proceded to do a stand up comedy act for me and my grandma. It was one of the strangest encounters I have ever experienced, but it was so weird that it honestly made me feel better because of how dumbfounded I was. I have never seen him since. I told the story to my dad later on that day, and he thinks that it was one of his cousins. Oh, and that cousin's name was Sylvester. I'm starting to think maybe Nicolas the Ridiculous was a time traveler who became inspired after watching this video. Thank you, Tugg, for possibly creating this monstrosity.

As someone who went to school for Mortuary Science, this video amuses me. Honestly though, I quickly left the field because it was too corporate. And working for smaller family owned ones is *really* hard to get into bc ya know---it usually stays within the family, but it can happen! But, I just couldn't sleep at night knowing that I had to up-sell a coffin, flowers, etc, to a grieving family. They're already at their lowest point, and they expect you try and sell, sell, sell. People are vulnerable when they're sad and funeral homes take advantage of that, unfortunately.
You can certainly find good ones, they are out there and do exist. Ones that are more concerned with the family and friends than the money but anyway---I understand it's a business, but it's a business that needs tact. We had to take a psychology course on how to talk with grieving people and do business with them.
I wanted to only be an embalmer, bc I've worked on a body and I find embalming fun, however I would have also been certified as a funeral director and personally, I don't want to be responsible for nearly draining a family dry just bc I convinced them "it's what they would have wanted," or "don't they deserve a good send off?" or some salesman bullshit like that.

    • @monkiimon
      @monkiimon 10 місяців тому +7

I recently started working as a funeral director at a mid-sized memorial park in CA USA, no license is needed for this position in this state, and everyone is dedicated to their own department. Embalmers and restorative artists work in the prep room, arrangers, sellers, and counselors work closely with the families, and directors realize the funeral services in accordance with the negotiation and work from the staff beforehand, we are the last stop. We accommodate, decorate, prep the chapels with religious items and catering, help the family with physical needs and walk them through the service, in this park we only direct.
Like you mentioned, it really does depend on the place, smaller funeral homes might have the director acting as the arranger, seller, and embalmer too, in which they do need all their licenses, and larger ones are quite corporate due to the large number of "clients" that choose them. The industry does have its negatives when it is seen as purely business and profit, but the good thing is that there are policies, laws, and ethics that are continuously looked at and improved for consumer rights and regulations.
I will be starting my courses in Mortuary Sciences soon, and will most likely see a side that won't sit right with me. But at least I know, from the directors' point of view, it is fulfilling to see a funeral go smoothly. All that work to get the permits approved, the certificates, the right clergy, plan it out, and to gather the resources from various departments just so we, the directors, can get this one shot right for the family and their loved one is the best thing out of this industry - the dedication and collaboration to help a family celebrate a life.
We need compassionate and empathetic people working here, and by the values that you've demonstrated in this small comment, I think you can help keep the greed at bay if you ever choose to return your path towards the funeral industry.

I am a trainee at a funeral home and I absolutely ADORE my boss because he is so chill with families pulling respectful jokes at funerals. One time he let the family drop a speaker into the casket and play a pre-recorded line of the loved one asking to be let out of the box (they were inspired by that viral video of that Irish funeral, lol). Another time he allowed for one of the brothers of the deceased to come in early into the chapel of rest and place a whoopie cushion on the dad’s seat (went over fantastically, but ended with a very confused and startled elderly man).
    Bring back fun end-of-life celebrations!

One of which held both an open room with a chalkboard and a playroom, most of the kids at the funeral spent it in the playroom, me, my brother, and my cousins spent the time playing hangman and attacking each other with pillows. Moral of the story:

Edit 20240315: Since people upvoted this I thought about it some more. WIP, but plan so far is I'd need to claw my way first in line for the stupid speeches, and say mildly weird things sprinkled with teachings that didn't come from the deceased, have an awkward close and then it's next speaker.
This way I don't have to follow hard acts from more successful siblings, and the audience can have a nice upward progression to the evening as better versed & more popular people speak. While the audience is captivated with that, I've eaten all the shrimp, ghosted the gig, and am in an Uber back to the airport.

This reminds me of my Nanas funeral where we tripped while setting the casket on the lowering straps and the casket slid into place (only slightly off kiltered 😅). Luckily everything was good and everyone got a good laugh knowing Nana would just laugh her butt off at it 😂 It really helped the mood before the end of the funeral!

My dad left us a month and a half ago. As per his wishes there was no funeral but a celebration of life (basically a potluck with family and friends) and that was so much easier to do, funerals are...they're almost traumatic eh? Like you have to perform mourn, not mourn in your own way. I get why my dad wanted this.

I was at a funeral for a partners great aunt a few years ago.. the son got up to "speak" and instead pulled a karaoke machine out from his pew and began singing. He sang 2 and a half songs before someone went up to stop him. It was still the most wild funeral experience I've personally had
(The son is a narcissist and often does outlandish things to get the attention on himself at the *most* inappropriate times)

my Papa's funeral I found out he was a spy during the Korean war....I knew he worked for the Pentagon for 22 years...22 years, 2 months, 2 weeks and 2 days to be exact. He was also a financial advisor/accountant, he really liked numbers....which I found out even more so because the coordinates he would have to memorize while being behind enemy lines. He also was one of the first 20 men to break the sound barrier in a plane and he got court-martialed for doing it because it was under the Golden Gate bridge. He spent the next couple years in Iceland haha. You find out more about people some times after they die.

My family has launched my dad's ashes 3 times now with Celestis Memorial Spaceflight.
And I know three times seems like a lot but he was quite the space Enthusiast and the first time around we couldn't go to the actual memorial launch because of covid so they gifted us with another launch, that one we got to go to but he re-entered the atmosphere within about 6 months so they gave us another launch. And that one is TBD. But it's a fucking epic experience every time

I remember I was going to my Uncles funeral, and we he was actually just 3 years older than me(my mom had me at a young age, and my grandmother had her children at a similarly young age) and we grew up in the same home and he was practically my brother growing up, but as we grew we started drifting apart, and he became more, and more pretentious to the point no one liked him(me included) nor associated with him(me included), and when he died in a car accident, I was the person he said was closest to him so I had to give a speech at his funeral. Legit no one wanted to do it, not even my mother, she and everyone I knew practically begged me to do it. Worst day of my life. But rest in peace Nikolai.
