Nicely done, it’s a way to build a groove during a break down that the whole band can get behind. Subbed for more tricks of the trade.

Hi Jon , it’s so awesome that I stumbled across your UA-cam channel. I bought your funk fusion book and cd about 26 years ago and I owe you many thanks. That book taught me how to use my fingers and so much more, all these years later I still pull that book out and practice those exercises. Many thanks from Australia.
    Ps keep on groovin 👌🏻

Wow.. Until I read your comment I hadn’t put the two together. That book was pretty much essential required reading for bassists worldwide pre-interwebs! That & Anthony Vitti’s super advanced technique & sight reading burner’s “Finger funk vol#1” & “Slap bass soloing” took me from experienced late intermediate to proficiently advanced! 😊

Welcome aboard, Timothy. Glad to have you here! Just curious… how often do you use an actual bass player on your recordings? 😀

Thanks John, you make it all about the groove and so fun. As I'm in a band which mostly free forms in jazz funk styles this is helpful for me. Thank you for your explanation of how E7 can work well with E dorian on the bass. I'm thinking E dorian would also work well over Em chords on the keyboard too?

Dorian = Santana's secret chord progression (said Zappa).
    But I love it.
