Will it start? Abandoned 1952 Austin A40 Devon

  • Heres the poor old Austin Devon struggling to run for the first time this year, the car has the larger 'B' series Austin engine. 1500cc OHV straight 4. The car is most likely a 1952, older restoration now showing little hope of seeing the road again. As for the engine, its needs a carb clean and probably a new set of plugs. But at least it still starts :)

My dad had one of these cars, here in Ireland,in the 50s. With two tone horns, semaphores and blue seats,it really was an iconic car. My brother and i loved to stand up on the rear bumper as dad drive from our main gates into the yard!

This car brings back a ton of memories for me as a 1950 A 40 Devon sedan was my first car.I got it for free back in early 1969.We got it running but had to replace a valve in the cylinder head and do a complete valve job on it.Mine still had the original owner's manual and the handcrank.

My Grandad had this car in the 1950's when my dad was a boy. My dad still rembers this car to this day. I would like one as for collecting family history in my car garage in the future.

Those post-war Zenith carburettors were made of a very nasty alloy. If you remove the bowl to replace the gasket or clear out the jets, the material of the body distorts so that it is almost impossible to achieve an airtight joint thereafter. Moreover, it is fatally easy to strip the threads on the two bolts which retain the bowl if you try just a little too hard to tighten them. This one looks as if it has been leaking fuel between the bowl and its cover - and of course, if fuel can get out, air can get in. I learned about this when running a slightly later Devon (the 1951 version with column change and central instrument-panel, like the Somerset which succeeded it) as everyday transport some 45 years ago.

Vê essa relíquia funcionando, recordo primeira vez que dirigir um automóvel. Estava com oito anos de idade; foi no ano de 1966. Que saudade.

We need an rspca type organisation for elderly cars. Especially those kept out in the open.

I had a 1949 one for three years in 1963........it had a manual sun roof, dual braking system, ( hydraulic front, cable rear), a heater under the dashboard which circulated interior air, and a 1200 cc BMC Gold Seal engine. It was sedate car, underpowered, top heavy-ish and relatively heavy on fuel. It got you from A to B, at cruise 50 mph, which just about summed it up. Upside was it was very easy to work on; head gasket change, valve grind-in, brakes, suspension,( grease gun essential!),.......not really a classic today in my opinion

Your A40 Devon is a fairly early model as it has a floor gear change, towards the end of the production run it changed to column change, as per the later Somerset. The engine will almost certainly be a 1200cc OHV unless a later lump has been fitted.

They love to snap crankshafts. Right at the flywheel end.

As you say - she is in a bad way! O K - you have got the engine started after many crank turnings - not surprising for an engine standing for a long period. I did not see you check for water BEFORE you started. As for oil - were you sure that there was a reasonable level? You didn`t visibly check that either. How long do you reckon on leaving things before the rust renders future endeavors futile? The plastic covering can actually trap moisture once it has gathered under it. Little hope of seeing it on the road again? Nonsense! You have a good project there and an Austin Devon is a really nice car to save! Not complex and, contrary to other comments below (or above!), the engine is very flexible and is a good slogger, especially if you have got the B series 1500 (1489) engine which was used in many different vehicles, including the 152/ J4 Minibus (14/16 seater!) which was produced as both an Austin or Morris, (different radiator grill pattern). You could, perhaps consider fitting an S.U. carb with manifold. My friend took a Morris Oxford manifold and S.U. and fitted it onto his Austin A 55 car which had a Zenith (all the same engines) and the results were good. I have always liked the constant depression carbs. Anyway, I wish you all the best.

This hasn’t been sitting very long since it had last run! Oil was checked last time. I knew it likely wouldn’t have any coolant in it as the water pump was shot and leaked. I also knew I wouldn’t be running it for very long either.
The car was a total wreck. An older 70’s restoration full of filler and fibre glass. Car was later sold that summer and the guy that it got sold too took all the trim and front wings off and the rest he tried to sell on. No idea where it is now. Likely long gone. She was very rough and past economical repair. The Devon doesn’t have a big following and good examples don’t fetch an awful lot unfortunately which meant this was only really good for spares
Believe they even later discovered the engine had frost damage.

@@MO3MINI Many thanks for the reply. There has to be a limit - I appreciate that. I had fond memories of driving one not long after my driving test - and found it so good natured. I believe that was a floor change. That was in the late sixties. My present car is a twenty two year old Ford Mondeo estate - 1800. They keep asking if I really want to spend out for another MOT and I just say "Yes please"! All the best.

With enough cash anything can go back on the road. But it was beyond my skills and bank balance. I sold it cheap to a guy that wanted to restore it. He sold it days later (for a tidy profit) to the guy that ultimately broke it up.

    • @MO3MINI
      @MO3MINI  Рік тому

It was sold to a family member cheap as it was meant to be a project. Was then sold on. Saw it 4-5 years ago for sale complete. And then again with the front end missing. Looks like it was parted out unfortunately

Sorry but the car was sold to a relative a good year back for next to nothing... It was then sold for £1000. Haven't seen or heard of it since. But I hope it's getting restored!
