      Yup, it is. Luke at this point had not broadened his belief of the force. He believed in what he could feel/touch and see in relevancy to himself. But any more sight beyond that point was dim to him. This scene reminded me of one from Star Trek The Search For Spock:
      Admiral Morrow : No. Absolutely not, Jim. You're my best officer, but I am commander, Starfleet, so I don't break rules.
      Kirk : Don't quote rules to me. I'm talking about loyalty and sacrifice. One man who's died for us, another with deep emotional problems.
      Admiral Morrow : Now, wait a minute. This business about Spock and McCoy; honestly, I never understood Vulcan mysticism.
      Kirk : You don't have to believe. I'm not even sure that I believe. But if there's even a chance that Spock has an eternal soul, then it's my responsibility.
      Admiral Morrow : Yours?
      Kirk : As surely as if it were my very own.
      Kirk is willing to challenge his own beliefs it it meant there was a chance of helping his best mate.
      And this comment t has dragged on long enough lol.
      Have a good day/eve

      @@mrrictus He still didn't fully believe it until Vader revealed himself to be his father. At this point Luke became filled with pride now knowing the true capabilities of the force and, believing himself to be a Jedi, thought he could harness it to defeat Vader. It wasn't until he was humbled (again) that he was truly able to step back and master its abilities.

Yoda recognizes it, and is incredulous at how someone so blind can still begin to grasp such power. But, even with all that power, Luke's misguided mind is a poor conduit for all his power, and must be attuned to it. Yoda is so deeply disappointed when he realizes just how much attuning is still necessary.

It's often stated they're incredibly difficult for traditional swordmasters to use because they throw them off balance without having the weight of a normal sword. It makes an incredible amount of sense to me that, in a galaxy that has mastered space travel and so many other advanced technologies, they would have a scientific understanding of the reality that they're manipulating. However, because of the way it works and how it influences their lives, it's beneficial and even necessary to have a "religious"/spiritual leader like Yoda to make sure their heart is in the right place and guide their mind. Maybe he knows the science, maybe he's forgotten by this movie. Maybe everything they knew was stored on Holocrons that were destroyed when Sidious took over. It doesn't matter. This is the first time we see on screen that the Force really is something beyond cheap tricks that strangle a person or misdirect them.
    Up until now relatively minor things have been attributed to the Force. Vader strangling someone; Obi Wan mind tricking Storm Troopers. These things could be simple illusions. Tricks of the mind induced by some strong minded person on a weaker one.
    Even Obi Wan vanishing after fighting Vader could be a trick of the mind from Luke's point of view.
    But to see something as physically impossible as lifting the X-Wing out of the swamp; happen right before your eyes? That's something you can't disbelieve easily.

    "We'll never get it out now." Already Luke has decided that its impossible. Already he's lost the battle. He had no faith or belief in himself that such a feat was possible. "Okay ill give it a try." "No, try not. Do. Or do not. There is no try." Yoda closes that comfortable avenue for failure. Luke attempts it, but he's only accepted that he'll try, not that he'll do. "You want the impossible." Yoda then shows him the impossible. "I don't believe it." "That, is why you failed."

    Yoda is teaching Luke that if you believe you can achieve the seemingly impossible. I especially love the scene where Yoda sends Luke into the cave where he warns him that the dark side lurks in there. He tells Luke that he will not need his weapons. But Luke doesn't listen and taking them in he encounters his worst fear: Darth Vader because he took with him his weapons which were objects used in combat or what were symbolic of violence, anger, hate, that is the dark side of the force. Brilliant story by George Lucas!!

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 11 місяців тому +2

      I'm still a little unsure what success would have looked like in the cave. In the show _Lost_ Hugo (Hurley) says that Luke botched his later encounter with Vader and should have talked it out with him, so he wouldn't lose his hand and we wouldn't get the Ewoks. I'm also not sure how that would have gone down.
      But clearly Yoda is afraid that Vader will use Luke's love of his friends to get him to surrender and turn him to the Dark Side. It's interesting that Lucas made Yoda say the line, "No, there is another," to suggest Luke might be expendable, or that he might fail and die. I guess he felt that otherwise fans would think he couldn't possibly lose, so this ups the tension. I still like to imagine a version of _Return of the Jedi_ (or its sequel) where there's "another" somewhere in the galaxy who we haven't met, maybe even his sister (before Lucas made her Leia).

    • @Synthwave89
      @Synthwave89 9 місяців тому +1

      Taking the lightsaber is not what caused him to see a vision of Vader. He would have seen that with or without it. The problem is how he dealt with it, his first instinct was to slice Vader's head off, something that will lead you to the dark side, just like Anakin slicing Dooku's head off did. Like he proved in Sidious' throne room, he didn't need his lightsaber to win against his father, he only had to redeem him with his love and compassion. Vader would NOT have killed his son at that point, Luke had already broken him down earlier when they spoke in Endor.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 9 місяців тому

      @@Synthwave89 OK, so say he went in without his weapons and encountered Darth Vader. Then what?
      On the one hand Yoda said he failed, probably because he was overcome by fear, anger and/or hate. But on the other the vision gave him his face in Vader's helmet. If the Dark Side was trying to seduce him, why give him that warning?

      I think the "do or do not" quote isn't supposed to be used outside of its context. What I mean is that he's basically telling to Luke that he doesn't have to try to lift the ship, he just has to cuz he can, a space ship is no more different than a rock when you believe in the force.

    • @bootlegpbj3767
      @bootlegpbj3767 Рік тому +4

      I think the absolutes quote refers to people disbelieving in the possibility of something despite improbability.
      If Obi Wan is not Anakin’s ally then he is his enemy, and this Anakin cannot see the possibility of his own manipulation at the hands of sith.
      Luke cannot believe in lifting the ship even after Yoda shows him it is possible and that is why he fails.
      All things are possible through the force and being closed to them is why only sith deal in absolutes

    • @shimanopetermann9068
      @shimanopetermann9068 Рік тому +10

      The "Do or do not" quote isn't about absolutes, though. That quote is meant to teach young Jedi to believe in themselves. If you say, "I'll try," you're already thinking that you might fail. It's a sign that you don't believe in your own capabilities and, more importantly, those of the force. Such defeatism makes you unable to use the force to its full potential. That's why Yoda answered, "That's why you fail," when Luke said, "I can't believe it."
