  • HERE’S WHAT TO EXPECT:
We’ll travel together from UMD to Little Sand Bay or Red Cliff. Here we will introduce you to kayaking equipment, get you fitted with a wetsuit and kayak, and you’ll learn some fancy kayaking tricks (bracing for stability, how to sidle up to another kayaker with a draw) and we’ll go over how to rescue each other (and yourself!) We’ll eat a picnic lunch together before packing kayaks to paddle to our campsite. Once there, we’ll set up tents and settle in for the evening while your guide cooks you dinner. First day paddling distance: 3 - 6 miles.
What is there to see and do on your trip? You might paddle over shipwrecks visible just beneath the surface of the water, play croquet on a lighthouse lawn (there are two to tour!) or experience the wonder of paddling through sea caves. Hiking trails reveal century-old cars abandoned by the families who used to farm on Sand Island, and patches of tart and delicious thimbleberries! Enjoy sandy beaches, watch a Lake Superior sunrise (or sunset!) hear the haunting call of loons at dawn, and see the Milky Way unobstructed by city lights.
You Provide: Personal clothing and camping equipment (sleeping bag, sleeping mat, headlamp, rain gear, cup, bowl, spoon, etc). Full packing list available here. (Don’t have it? Reserve it from the UMD Rental Center. Inquire about discounts for RSOP program participants).
We Provide: All sea kayaks, paddles, personal floatation devices, safety gear, cold-water immersion wear, dry bags for your belongings, instruction, transportation from UMD, food, and group camping gear (tents, rain fly, camp stove and cooking supplies, water filter).
