There's no language on the African continent as beautifully spoken as Hausa. I'm an Asante and speak the Akan language (Twi). But I've always been fascinated by Hausa. It's just so beautiful to hear someone speak it.

I’m both hausa and Igbo but I never really learnt hausa growing up since I was mostly surrounded by Igbo people (my moms side) and never learnt from my dads side which is hausa, and now I want to learn about my language and culture

I am from northern Ghana, the most northernmost part. I grew up speaking Hausa with family and friends. I remember when we were younger we used more Hausa words but as we grew up we started replacing them with English words. I miss the good old days.
Queens, NY a few years ago, 'heard a familiar accent & I randomly asked.."ka ji hausa, ko?" The look on Ali's face was priceless.To this day, our occasional street encounters makes strangers smile. I lived in Gombe when it was still a town. Wonderful memories - Yankari, shayi with our mai gadi, local friends....Mungode da yawa.
I'm just learning that I am Hausa/Fulani from ancestry tests and this is super helpful. It's crazy but looking at you I can see we're from the same tribe.

I not too sharp on ethnic differences in Somalia but Nigeria has tons of ethnic diversity with over 500 spoken languages. How do you make one an official language.

I'm Eastern Band Cherokee from the US--the oldest woman is the head of the household. We say the person's name if we know them too as a way of saying Hello, otherwise it's Siyo, pronounced "shee-YOH" in the Carolinas.

Yasmin It's easy language if not simplest in Africa , hence 140million+ Africans are able to speaks hausa. If you visit Hausaland like KANO you will be able to speaks it in less than 4months.
Ahmad Qasim Baura WOW this gives me some hope...thank you! If only I knew someone living in KANO I wouldn’t hesitate to visit. ☺️The people I know live in Ghana and they told me that Nigerian Hausa is the proper one. They said theirs is like a broken or slang version.

Yasmin there is not just one Hausa dialect, and there is no such thing as Nigerian Hausa. Nigeria has 4 main dialects, Sokotawacci, Dauranci, Kananci, Katsinanci. The Hausa spoken on BBC for instance is Kanaci which originates from the Kano area. However, I don't agree that the Hausa we speak in Nigeria is the proper Hausa. In Niger republic, they also speak Hausa throughout the nation, but the main Hausa cities are Zinder and Maradi. So between Niger Republic and Nigeria you will find proper Hausa.
Yasmin 😊 you are welcome. , In Nigeria we have several hausa dialect, about 11 of them Infact all the 14 Northern state has their own hausa dialect , Like hausa form new dialects wherever they went. In Nigeria originally their are Hausa Bakwai (seven legitimate) true hausa kingdom as they expand and build new kingdom here is how we got the Banza Bakwai(seven illigitimate) the ghana hausa is called ghananci and its vocabularies are of Sakkwanci block once you understand it the Sakkwatanci (represented seven illegitimate hausa) you will have no problem understanding the Kananci dialect ( That represents the seven legitimate dialects). Note the begger difference is the accent that tend to change as hausa expand but we understand each other with no difficulties. Good luck with your lessons.
Monsieur Africain hausa from zindar and maradi where do they came from? Maradi is Katsina the Katsina king fled to his town maradi and form a new kingdom during the Sokoto jahad. King of maradi is only addressed as Sarkin Katsinan maradi ( King of Katsinawa people of maradi) but zinder is under Kanuri kingdom of damagaram after Kanuri Kindom cease hausa and fulani jahadist took over it so the hausa language took over.

It's British accent, especially that of London, [other accents in England might me so different]. You might consider listening to British podcasts, or relocating to Britain for a while.

Yes vocabulary varies in Hausa even from city to city for example there are words that are used in Sokoto and Katsina that are different in Kano, so I can imagine Ghana being further away from Kano has many different words some of which come from other languages too. I met a Ghanaian Hausa lady a few months ago who called a 23ye old ‘budurwa’ instead of ‘mata’ - in Kano budurwa specifically refers to young, unmarried girls, we don’t really use it for ladies over the age of 20 so I found it quite funny lol

Nice! Really informative. Thank you! Interesting that the royal greeting has elements of Arabic. I speak Swahili from east Africa where there has been Arabic influence. 'Baraka' is used in swahili and 'asubui' means morning. I believe i heard both terms in your greeting. We live and learn.
swahili is a Bantu language, originally from Tanzania but get influenced by Arabic but Haussa we cant tell its influenced by Arabic, there is similar words to arabic simply cuz both are Afro-asian languages so same roots just from different group. there is more than 300 Afro-Asian languages and Afro-Asian languages are composed of 6 groups egyptian, berber, chadic , cushitic, omotic and semitic. Arabic, Amharic for example are afro-asian languages from semitic group and Haussa is afro-asian language from chadic group.
@@mattavien1011 you are right that swahili has a lot of Bantu in it. It has also been influenced by other languages like German and Portuguese. Also Chinese presence in East Africa goes as far back as AD 618-907 in the Tang dynasty. Looks like the whole world has at some point landed on the East African coast.
Hausawa are a majority Muslim group, and they have been been influenced by the Arab language due to the nature of the religion.

I just got my ancestry results. I have to go premium to go deeper. I'm a mix of different African peoples and white. Nigerian is my biggest estimate by 23%. No one would think I'm African because of my skin color and hair texture. Even I didn't think so.

Nafisa, one correction, although there are Hausa in Northern Cameroon, the lingua Franca in Northern Cameroon is Fulfulde (Fulani language).
Monsieur Africain sure the northern cameroon lingua franca is Fulfulde not hausa, is it due Fulani concentrate in one region the Adamawa emirate and hausa are scattered across Cameroon. Let me know your take on that.
Ahmad Qasim Baura That is correct! Where in N. Nigeria the lingua franca is Hausa, in Northern Cameroon the lingua franca is Fulfulde. Even though technically speaking Adamawa state in Nigeria and Adamaoua province in Cameroon share similar culture composition, Fulfulde is not the lingua franca, although, Fulfulde is vastly spoken in Adamawa state. Adamawa in both Nijeriya and Cameroon has a lot of minority groups with the a Fulɓe (Fulani) being the majority group.

Abdinasir Mohamed Kalbani they came from north east Africa region , I’m doubts East African and because I am a bit built now , people stoped saying I look either Ethiopian or Somali and they now say I look Fulani / Hausa , that’s when I started to do research . I read they migrated from east Africa and they are found in Mali niger chad plenty of other nationalities , interesting , you might be related

The meaning of, "Ina kwana?" is 'How was the sleep (over the night)?'. The meaning of, "Lafiya" is 'Fine/Well' while "Lau" means, 'Very'.
Ina kwana means good morning is a greeting lafiya neans fine is kalau but we say lau like a shortcut for it
