The proper way to say it is "How the tables have turned." However there's a meme from The Office where the doofus of the show screwed up the saying to, "How the turntables." This actually makes more sense because even within the phrase the tables turned and changed places with turn.

Eh. I'm on the fence. Subaru was legitimately trying to learn English phrases the whole stream. Throwing a meme at her with a wrong pronunciation would just confuse her later. People might think she is asking how to turn a table. I honestly believe if Reine didn't jump in to correct her, Kiara would have continued to beat the dead horse and possibly may not have told her the truth. It's kind of rude and given that Kiara has had to work hard to be trilingual, she should know better. Inb4 "LoL it's Jork".

Not necessarily an Office reference at this point. It was originally from the Office, but most people learn it from the internet via various sources. I myself thought it was a niche joke from a fandom I'm in until I found out it was from the Office. The question is, is Kiara American enough and old enough to have heard it from the Office itself or did she hear it second-hand like most of us?

@@jase276 It's not really claiming. It's like if you heard something from a news channel and told it to your friend. You're referencing the news channel and the news channel referenced something else, say, the government. The person isn't referencing the government there, at least not directly.
If there's a meme I heard from Fandom B and it came from Fandom A, I'm referencing Fandom B. It originally came from A, and if I need to cite where it came from it would be A, but my association with it is B. It's the same for anything else. You could be referencing a book, but the original source is a play by Shakespeare. Or you could be referencing Shakespeare, but the original is from somewhere else.
Maybe there's a better way to call what I'm talking about, but as far as I'm concerned that's referencing. It's not referencing in the same way as a research paper, but referencing nonetheless.

I think it comes from the idea of losing a chess match, and then "turning the table" to switch sides. The phrase has become so cliche, that we sarcastically say "how the turntables" to both reference the situation, and poke fun at and refresh the original phrase. It's actually quite efficient as a high context joke.

But you're right, Kiara probably didn't think much of it when telling this phrase to Subaru, it's just a common phrase, but she does know where it comes from. But it could be confusing if someone who is still learning knows the slang first rather than the original, so reine correct it.
