I’m slightly upset that this entire thought was edited out.
Was almost smooth enough to miss but the way it sounded like he just repeated himself back to back caught me off guard and was out of character for his speech patterns. Had to rewind and rewatch.
I understand that it’s your show to run, but it makes me speculate as to what information was robbed from me.

The part about handicapped or mentally challenged people in Afghanistan is true. In 2013 we were doing a normal patrol around Salerno when we came across a house that we could hear disturbing vocal noises and the sound of something heavy hitting the ground. I don’t recall who in my platoon inquired the resident but the man opened a gate and then two more doors that led into a small courtyard. A very small shack, about the size of a porta John, sat in the back corner and then there was a thick chain that went from a u shaped rebar in the ground and attached to a persons ankle with a shackle. The man kept saying “He ‘a crazy!”. I could be wrong, but a majority of the people either don’t know or don’t have a word for mentally challenged so that’s the word they use. Either that or the word was lost on translation with our linguists. Same area we also came across a crowd that was gathering around the main area in the town. Asked our linguists what’s going on and he said the small crazy man is here. Turns out one of the construction heads around the area was in fact a dwarf. He wasn’t an Afghan so the locals did not like him at all. He was escorted by his own bodyguards and these bodyguards would try to beat the shit out of anyone trying to take a picture. Crazy occurrences over there that make you realize things you take for granted on a daily basis here in the US.

Where he was talking about how handicapped people, or little people are treated has bases in their beliefs. I knew a woman from Egypt who explained it like this: basically their handicaps are evidence that god disfavors them. If god has basically rejected them why should you treat them with decency? Its almost like how the Nazi's viewed the same type of people, only Nazi's views were based on Pseudo science.

I really do enjoy your podcasts, and I thank you for them. They're always interesting, and I always learn something. I am soon to be 72 years old, so my perspective is a bit jaded, when it comes to wars. I have read a lot about various wars, battles, and had friends who fought in Vietnam. The stories they told varied from person to person just as did their personalities. Some guys could talk about nothing but the bloody side of it, with the bodies stacking up like cordwood; others would only talk about the curious or humorous events they had experienced. I have read about the bravery and the cowardice, and those who went the extra mile and those who froze with terror for being completely unable to process the insanity of it all, those who thrived in war, and those who ended up as complete wrecks. I've read about the intolerable conditions of the trench warfare of WWI, the madness of the musket lines of the Napoleonic wars, the sea battles of the sailors in the wooden ships, yardarm to yardarm seen through the sulphurous fog of the black powder smoke...
I never served, I had hepatitis when my draft number came up. So I cannot speak with the authority of those who did; but it seems to me that the only unreality is the few times the world has seen peace. Since Cain murdered Abel, we have been finding better and more efficient ways of slaughtering each other, and sadly... I can foresee no lesser end to this madness than complete nuclear holocaust.

      Hello Stranger,
This was a very well written comment Sr. I took it all in and it had a vision to it. Almost as if I were to create my own fake memories from what you wrote. Are you a writer? If not, have you ever thought of doing something like that? I could easily get into a made up story of war, love, loss, and everything between from someone like you who has a great interest in these things with a great feel for painting a clear and colorful picture through their words. It seems you have a great interest + knowledge of these things. I think people often count themselves out on account of never actually experiencing the main topic of their interests. But to me writing is beyond that. There are countless authors who could never have experienced their stories for obvious reasons that I won't list because the examples are endless.
It is a "story" after all. I just wanted to say that I could listen to you all day. Lol (or read your words) obviously this is only a comment and so I feel that you were likely lax with the wording and format in general. So I have to assume that it would be even more lovely to read if you were to express yourself and tell a story in a intentional setting. I figure even if you have zero desire to do so, it's still nice to know that you are an interesting person and a great story teller. So there ya go my fellow UA-cam commenter! Lol! 😉 👍
Ps. Hope you have a great day! And since I didn't even mention it, I'll say that I fear you may be right in the end. Hopefully we won't be here to be a part of it. Even better yet, hopefully we all do something small here and now that adds up to one big moment or action in the future that prevents it all. But I am realistic at heart and I can't say I have much faith in the last hope listed.

The vietnamese were the pinnacle of braveness if you actually think about the material context of the war. just like the taliban against the us, its crazy how history is written by the victors. somehow our efforts are seen as sympathetic yet we have the means and in reality do kill the most in any war (with over 1000 international military bases worldwide, vietnam had 0 the taliban had 0). yet somehow still lose the conflicts, cause often the objective, like in vietnam, was not to win but to drain vietnam and drain the soviets of any productive allies cause the important war was the war with russia. and they used the bodies like cannon fodder cause the wars rarely end on the battle field, often they hand through deals. And even if then US won these wars all it can do is occupy as it gets its government of choice to rule. that failed in afghanistan and is failing in syria -- even as the us holds sanctions over them during this earthquake, so the dying civilians are banned from getting aid, children are dying in the aftermath of the earthquake due to freezing to death, thirst and starvation. So the real cowards are the ones at the top who call the people to war but will never be in the frontlines. The tales of war are miraculous, its a shame that we are lied to about the motives, all those americans who died or came back traumitized from that war, and for what? those who sacrificed themselves for their platoon and so on, they were all pulled into this war thinking it was for freedom, but it was only freedom for raytheon to profit, and all the real costs borne by the soldiers and civilians. Should we just interject and interfere in any civil war by entering the war? why not send the US to eastern congo then. why not to Sudan, why not to everywhere where there is conflict. They lie to us in the most sinister ways.

Love veterans not merely for their service, but for their being more worldly. I can see why the PTSD is compounded, exacerbated by the mind boggling tiny worldview that many Americans have as a result of choosing not to travel or choosing not to educate themselves about other cultures and places on this vast planet. I'd rather talk to a veteran or a missionary (regardless of religious denomination) bc such individuals are more fully alive and educated than the average person. Vets actually have a lot to teach us about being more humane and kind to each other and we should listen more to their PTSD stories as opportunities to imagine and end all war. Thanks for inviting this guest and modeling what it takes to support a vet😎🙏
