Roger Ebert's Best Films of the Year (1967-2012)

  • Roger Ebert, film critic for the Chicago Sun-Times from 1967 until his death in 2013, compiled forty-six 'best movies of the year' lists; here are the films that topped each one.
Over time, he sometimes changed his opinions - notice that 2001, Taxi Driver, Raging Bull & E.T. did not initially place at #1 on his end-of-year lists.
The music that plays over each decade comes from the score of the film he consider to be the best of that decade; credit for the scores goes to their respective composers. The images are the theatrical release posters of each film. No copyright infringement is intended for either.

Got to hand it to Ebert, he called them like he saw them, regardless of popular opinion. He also judged every movie on it's own merit, not in comparison with others. Though I disagree with several of his choices, I always looked forward to his reviews. The best film critic of all time.

I didn’t know he liked Dark City that much. It’s a great movie.

He tended to like Alex Proyas' work quite a bit (The Crow, Dark City, Knowing).

I remember watching the episode of Siskel and Ebert where Ebert named Dark City as his favorite of that year. Siskel said he didn't like the movie but now he was going to watch it again out of respect for Robert, which was very sweet, I thought. :)

@The Man in Orange He originally gave it a (marginally) positive review; don't know if he ever got a chance to re-watch it.

@@distinguishedflyer Yeah, "didn't like" is maybe too strong. I think he just said that he was surprised by the choice, and he wanted to watch the movie again to see what Ebert saw in it.

Ebert recorded a commentary track for the Dark City DVD, which is quite an enjoyable listen.

Hollywood must have figured out they didn't have to make good films anymore without Roger around. 2012 lines up just about right.

Got the best films of the year as chosen by Richard Schickel?

How do you know what his best films were for 2008 and 2009, when his list went alphabetically those years?

    • @distinguishedflyer

His 'best-movies-of-the-2000s' list had Synecdoche New York at #1 and The Hurt Locker at #2, so I felt pretty safe in specifying those two titles.

A great teacher of film. He was indulgent, seeing excellence in a film few other critics saw. He was harsh on the classic Midnight Express and the French masterpiece of bourgeois iconoclasm, Going Places, with Gérard Depardieu, a film still beloved in France,at least online. He was Hollywoodish,at times, and sanctimonious in tastes. He praised as one of greatest movies the interesting, though boring, Tokyo Story (from the otherwise poetical, Yasujiro ).

I didn't always agree with Roger. Like, 1987: House of Games over Full Metal Jacket, Broadcast News, Wall Street, Hope & Glory... But he was convicted. If I remember right, he declared Goodfellas "best film of the year" despite there still being 3-4 months left in 1990, and I think Gene agreed.

@@sha11235 He often called Taxi Driver the best movie of the 1970s & Raging Bull the best of the 1980s, yet both movies originally came in at #2 on his end-of-year lists. So did 2001, for that matter.
