He is saying art shouldn't be explained through words and sentences but on a deeper level. Not all this topics/subjects/titles of art, cvs, resumes etc. The average People always want to define things in sentences categorize order.
Maybe this is too easy of me, but he starts off by saying he is against theory, and then proceeds to weave a theory. What I would really love to know is whether he felt his work was a lifelong atonement.
He's not against "theory" in general, but against the strictly intellectual and detached fashion of theorizing. What he counter-proposes, therefore, is a sort of thorough and all-encompassing understanding. The idea of his work as "a lifelong atonement", for example, is but a theoretical interpretation which cannot avoid, despite its charm, being partial, biased, or even disorientating.
Ehy guys. Just curious, because i see a lot of enthusiast people: why do you think that among the modern/contemporary arts music struggle to emerge, meeting continous rejection? I'm now digging heavely on Beuys and fluxus art and i cannot find the usual plantation of hate seeds that i find under Xenakis or Feldman videos (just to name a couple). The same is applied to my bread which is Jazz. Late Coltrane, Cecil Taylor, Ornette Coleman are banned from academic discourse. Nobody really knows them, even professors (with some precious exceptions). Why is that? Is the art world more open than the music world? Thank you. :)

well thank goodness he turned to art after being a Nazi sympathiser and trying to see life more in terms of shades of grey than in the black and white which totalitarians want to push on us. You see things in shades of grey too, do you?
thank you deeply, to whomever took the time, to do the english translation, and subs.
Joseoh Beuys Explaining his Art to a Living Person
Or, art explaining itself through a dead Joseph Beuys
So cool to see all these Beuys pieces being uploaded, love it.

Thanks for the translation! This is so precious, I l-o-v-e it :)
Unfortunate;y the work always loses energy once explained. No matter how well explained. The event always speaks louder.
interesante!
Very true. But it also opens a door to someone that might otherwise have remained closed.
i've got astonished perceiving that "mr. ligeti" he was talking about was actually György Ligeti!
I also want to know what he said to the hare. If you have a link to that text, reply!
