I think the song connected more with the Swedish audience because of the lyrics and the feel of the song is very, very connected with the book/movie. The book is a classic children’s book in Sweden and i think you will be hard pressed to find anyone born after 1954 that hasn’t read, listened to the book or seen the movie. So even though the song in itself maybe “not a banger” the song together with the book/movie strikes home in the hearts of the Swedish people. Swedes L O V E Astrid Lindgren!! I would say to almost religious status. I know big strong “tough” Swedes that will have a tear in their eye when they talk about her meaning to them.
Fun fact about Mio Min Mio is that it features a very young Christian Bale and also Christopher Lee. Took me many years to realize that it was actually dubbed in swedish, haha.
Here is the free full movie from 1987 with the English original soundtrack and the swenglish speaking actors 😉 Really charming. See it with your son perhaps 🥰 m.ua-cam.com/video/VJZQkK25c6g/v-deo.html
The fact that during the cold war you hade a movie co produced by companies in Soviet union, Sweden, Norway and UK is mind blowing. Apart from a few British, Swedish and Norwegian actors most of the actors was Russian.
@@ThomasVanhala Yeah it was a really cool movie. But actually most of the actors were British, Swedish and Norwegian - only a hand full of the rolls were played by Russian actors. The director however was Russian and that was really cool.
I think the reason this song became so big is the relationship we have to the book and the movie. It's the kind of story that can really touch you heart and if you grow up with it, this music will likely move you. You don't have that connection, so no wonder you didn't like that much. I recommend you read the book or watch the movie, to to get the song but because it's worth it by itself.
Highly suggest reading the book instead of watching the movie though. But then again, it's fun to see a young Christian Bale. And Christopher Lee is always awesome. As long as you don't watch it for the great performances/effects.
The film is about young boy Mio drinking himself to death and meeting his dead father and his lost best friend (Christian Bale) in "heaven". The birds in the movie and song are dead children... Such beautiful and dark book/movie. A new script was written a few years ago, but further planning was postponed, I think because of Covid and/or that they haven't chosen a director, or some other key roles.
If you really wanna take part of the Swedish culture, then hunt down more Astrid Lindgren stories. It is hard to find an author who have made a bigger impact on Swedish children growing up than her. To name some of her classics which has both books and films/series are: Emil i Lönneberga Madicken Barnen i Bullerbyn Pippi Långstrump (as you mentioned) Rasmus på Luffen Bröderna Lejonhjärta Mio min Mio And the list goes on.
You have a son if I am not mistaken? Well if you have children you have to read the books with your children by Astrid . Emil , PIppi ,Mio min mio and see the films. Its a must because there is hidden the swedish soul mixed with tears and laughter.
Have not seen the movie more then glimpses, only read the book like once as a kid. However I heard this song many many times on the radio as a kid but I haven't heard this in like 30 years - I still get goosebumps though... I am suprised it is still magical to me, but in a positive way.
Aaah this brings back so much childhood memories🥲 I think you have to watch the movie and get the story to be moved by this one. This song is very closely associated with the movie - worth checking out! Speaking of Ronja Rövardotter, I would recommend the song "Vargsången" wich is also very beautiful. If you haven't heard it yet please react to it☺ You only have to search "Ronja Rövardotter - Vargsången" here on youtube.
This was a very short version 🙈 Anyway: See the movie! And if you want to hear more of Anders in the duo Gemini you should listen their second biggest hit: “Kall som is” 🥰
Here you can see the full movie with original English soundtrack - but beware of the Swedish actors with the swenglish accent 🥰😉 m.ua-cam.com/video/VJZQkK25c6g/v-deo.html
Fun fact! They didn’t bother to record new chorus parts to the Swedish version so you can hear that they’re just singing over the english chorus ”Mio my Mio”. It bugs me beyond belief 😂 so I always listen to the LIVE version from Från Waterloo till Duvemåla. Love this movie! Love the song! Anders is not featured on the song.
Must be time for some Melody Club soon, think you would like it. Palace Station, Covergirl, Electric or Baby by them I think would be consider as modern classics. Also Fever Fever was the soundtrack to one of the Fifa games 😊 Love your chanel man! ♥️
True that the name of the song and movie in Sweden is “Mio, min Mio”. In English the song is called “Mio, my Mio”, and movie “Mio in the Land of Faraway”. The singer here actually sung the English, Swedish and Russian version to the movie/album. ☺️
I think Gemini is kind of like Roxette were one part of the duo is doing most of the singing and the other half plays the instruments. Orup - Regn hos mej
Every time our class in school (when i was a kid) got to wild and up the walls, our teacher used to tell us all to lay down on the floor and she turned the lights off and played this song so we would all calm down. I loved it.
I remember the book from my first year in school. This song adds a romantic touch but also a feeling of something sinister. Beautiful but a hint that something dark is hiding in the background.
Atheism is so big here in Sweden but maybe we should all be called Asterists instead here because many of us love and adore Astrid as if she was God, and she truly was such a special person. I really recommend the three part documentary of her from 2014!
I think you need to read the book to understand the song. When I was a kid I was more drawn to the morose stories, alas I was fond of Mio min Mio and Bröderna Lejonhjärta most of all of Astrid Lindgrens books. They touched the subject of Death which was more appealing than the happy-go-lucky.
A lot of the popularity is due to the movie, can only agree that it isn't really a banger, but it's definitely better when you relate it to the movie, a bit like Neverending Story :)
That's what makes it so interesting whith your reactons; We never know what you're gonna like or not. I honestly thought that you would like this song more, but you never know! ;-)
This makes me wanna watch the movie again, i haven't seen it since i was a kid, wasn't a huge fan at the time but maybe i can appreciate it more for what it is this time around.
You shoud listen to some Ronja Rövardotter songs! And please, watch all the movies (the swedish clsssics), you will get another level of understanding of it.
So i am an Swede and when i was a little kid, my parents used to read the book ”Mio min Mio” for me, and I loved it and wanted them to read it again, again and again. and well the song is number one hit because if you read the book or see the movie you really will feel the connection with the story and song. I always start to cry when I hear this song because I have such a strong connection to the story. Have a nice day! Byeeyyeeye ❤️
You should listen to "Kall som is" by Gemini. Karin is one of the best singers we´ve ever had and when she sings together with Anders it´s pure perfection! You can really hear that they are siblings.
This is a cultural classic. It should’ve been mentioned in the information that it’s the soundtrack to the movie with the same title. The lyrics are strongly connected the plot of the book/movie. A great fantasy story. The song still gives me chills. One of Astrid Lindgren’s finest works 🙌🏼
Written by ABBA duo Benny Andersson and Björn Ulvaeus for the film Mio min Mio by Pippi Longstocking author Astrid Lindgren. The song itself talks about when a boy comes to the land where his dead brother is. That's why the song is slow!
I recommend you check out this clip with the English version of the song where you see some of the movie to add some feeling and atmosphere. However 📢 SPOILER WARNING, the end of the movie is revealed. 😀
Not too fond of this song, but it sure is classic and nostalgia. Karin Glenmark is such an amazing singer with a great voice but I don't think this song allows her to show that. You should listen to her singing Chess! Then you will hear what a great singer she is. For Gemini, you should listen to TLC or Kall som is.
AND Anders och Karin was in the early 70s members in the group Glenmarks together with their aunt and onkel Ann-Louise Hansson (also popular soloartistö and Bruno Glenmark. Participated in Melodifestivalen 3 times. So, Anders has really been a buzy guy. Part from being an artist he also produced a lot.
"Sveriges Souldrottning"Jennifer Brown med Tuesday Afternoon och Titiyo med Come Along är några bra förslag på låtar som spelades flitigt runt sekelskiftet!
I think that this song did not hit you the same way as it does for someone who saw the movie and/or read the book as a child. It is such a nostalgia around this song. Maybe you need to watch the movie yourself or read the book and then come back to this song. You might change your mind a bit about it then :)
Even I who am a huge fan of Anders Glenmark can't complain when I get a whole song by his sister Karin. She might be a better singer of the siblings Glenmark. Amazing woman.
I definitely think you should read Mio min Mio for Bash, and you should read Bröderna Lejonhjärta. They are my two favorite Astrid Lindgren books. Two different books, that essentially tell the same message: Fighting tyranny and oppression is your duty, you must fight it no matter how much it scares you, you must fight it even though you might get killed in the fight. And they are pretty scary to an 8 or 9 year old boy.
Of course americans dont usually like this kind of stuff! I knew you would not like it that much! You have to watch the movie as a child and be open to the weird stuff in it! And like otherwordly beautiful things!

I did not like this one at all :D I don't like the way she sings, and the close up of her soulless stare in the video is really unnerving. And what's with the pan flutes...

It was his big screen debut. I actually love the fact that long before he was Batman, he was Benke.
