- Clarice Cliff from Stoke-on-Trent is one of the most important pottery designers of the twentieth century and her work is some of the most sought after in auction houses throughout the world!
Clarice Cliff was born in 1899 in Tunstall, Stoke-on-Trent - the fourth of eight children. She showed early skill in art, and recalled enjoying art lessons at school.
In 1927 she was sent for six months to the Royal College of Art in Kensington, and when she returned to the Wilkinson factory she was given a studio and assistants.
In 1928 an experimental series was produced, organised by Colley Shorter, using modern geometric shapes and bold colours. Called 'Bizarre Ware', it was an instant hit.
In 1930 she was made Art Director of the company, and by 1931 she was overseeing 1000 workers, including her team of all female painters who were called The Bizarre Girls. The business expanded as demand for Clarice Cliff china increased, and patterns varied to suit changing fashions. Her designs were copied all over the world in her heyday, as far afield as Japan.
In 1940 Clarice married Colley Shorter, the Managing Director of the firm. They travelled extensively, trying to promote A J Wilkinson goods throughout the wartime restrictions on pottery production, and so she designed less herself.
In 1961 Colley became ill, and he died two years later.
Clarice decided to retire, and sold the company, leaving no successor.
In 1972 she passed away.
This is the remains of a waste pile of spoiled pottery deemed no good and chucked away... There would have Been hundreds of these piles all over Stoke-on-Trent. Most have been buried but a few can still be found as the weather washes new bits to the surface.

My great grandparents worked in the pottery industry in Stoke, I don't know what they did, but I know they worked there, it makes me proud.
Wow you should be proud. Thats an amazing bit of history to hold onto. You should do some research and see if you can find out where they worked ❤
Shocking to see all those fragments of Clarice's design work lying there. Thanks for posting this video.
Clarice was a very talented designer well ahead of her time. I began collecting about 30 years ago and have perhaps 60 pieces of her work. I never tire of looking at my collection
Wow no I wouldn't tire of it either. And i totally agree very talented. I would love to own one complete piece. One day hopefully.
Hii there, my collection includes 3 Samford T for 2 tea sets
@rogerwilco WOW again. Most of the sherds I find are the crocus design. But it's hard to get an idea of the shapes.
Great video, thanks 🙂
Thank you vicky ❤❤👍
Fascinating
Cute 🙂 🐕 Dog !
Thank you ❤️
I was scouring The shard dump opposite The site of The Newport pottery 25 years ago....Occasionally you'd dig up an almost complete piece....I guess those Sycamores are pushing Clarices pottery to the surface.....Leonard Griffin was the first I know spending time on the dump. Thank you for the wonderful memory
All these fragments should preserved as a piece of history . How … I’m not sure ... If They were Picasso’s scraps ? What would happen ? Great British art and industry combined beautifully at such a time of change .Those lady painters were lucky to have a creative job - when most had daily monotonous tasks .
I agree. But like you how could it be done? Some bits you can see the texture of the brush strokes. and I have found blobs of clay with fingerprints on. Hopefully one day someone will want to display my little collection
Wow what a place loads of history would like to go here have a look one day soon👌
Thank you Claire. Will definatly take you when you come up ❤
My ex wife's mum used to be a paintress at Claris cliff in the 30s. They weren't allowed to keep and sample pieces they painted, so we're probably broken up!
That's so sad. I sometimes find bottom stamps with letters on maby the initials of the paintress
Cool thanks

Really interesting. I wondered what you might do with the parts?
Thank you for commenting Lisa. I have made a few small mosiac hanging hearts for friends and family. But I still have alot of pieces left over that I am sorting into patterns and saving. Some of them you can see the brush stokes in the paint. Amazing to think of all the girls that made them ❤️
@@katiekatieeexplores - I know, the history behind it all. Amazing. I love your heart mosaic idea, perfect solution, and I lovely way to keep the story alive. :)
Great video thank you - can you let me know when you went to the shard ruck as I have shared your video with other Clarice Cliff collectors who were equally impressed. Thanks in advance Gav
Hi gavin. Thanks for the kind words. The footage is this year, but I have been picking bits of shards since last year. So not all collected in one visit. Thank you for commenting ❤👍
