"I've found that if you find yourself needing like tons and tons of EQ on it you might not just be using enough compression" This is some of the best, most stress reducing bit of advice I've heard in a while. It rings out in my head when I feel myself EQing a vocal in circles trying to make it fit.
I learned so much in this video. The concept of compressing an already almost limited signal again with a slower attack to make it MORE dynamic opened my eyes.
I've been watching your instructional videos for awhile, I'll often come back for references and such. I was reading an article today on mixing screams and this vid came up and the article mentioned you were the dude who produced Silverstein's Rescue, This is How the Wind Shifts and I Am Alive In Everything I Touch. Holy crap! Those were their best albums imo you did a great job!!
I know this is an old one, so maybe you don't see this comment haha buuuuttt you should totally do a video about tape head. As in, everything you use it for, and what it really does for the mix. I've seen a ton of conflicting info, and as usual, you're the only person in the world of production that seems to just get straight to the point and always deliver solid gold advice. (Which is why if there were anyone I'd sign up with, it'd be you.) Too yeah a tape head video, about using it on drums and vocals and maybe why you don't just use it on every single track for a full analog feel. Which tracks/instruments its good for and why. I recently just got J37 from waves on a he discount, and I want to make the best out of it. P.s. you could probably take explaining plug ins pretty far. It's a HUGE part (maybe the biggest part) about learning mixing, plug ins are our new version of all the hardware gear that makes a studio a "studio." Seeing how you now own a plug in company, that make you a big authority, on the subject, and I think if you were to do more videos on not just your own but everyones plug ins, you could become the biggest authority on the subject. If you think about it, every mix tutorial is essentially a plug in demonstration/explanation. You're already THE dude for this (in my opinion) but if you made maybe like a series or something dedicated to plugins, (the types, the models, the variances, the in depth "secret" features) I think you'd become one of the biggest names out here. Just a thought... Thanks for everything you do! I've been here a very long time, and don't plan on leaving any time soon haha
Thanks man. I don't use Tapehead as much as I used to, but sometimes it's the perfect solution. Great on kick, harsh guitars, sometimes snare, sometimes vocals.... it smooths out the high end and adds fullness to the low/low mids. Not many people have Tapehead though, so it probably wouldn't be a popular video haha.
@@hardcoremusicstudio haha yeaaah you may be right about that, seems a bit rare. Probably why I have trouble finding info on it. I really love it on a kick though, and after I heard how much better it was I was like "alright, I need to know more." So thanks so much for the reply dude! Just another reason you're the best at this whole teaching/mentoring thing
great tutorial - for the first time i understand using the 1176 in this way, you're essentially putting in extra dynamics that were flattened by the fast attack ssl, emphasising the transients at the front of the words yes?
He's not adding any dynamics with the 1176, he's actually compressing it more, which emphasises the transients by lifting up the quieter passages before the words.
Yung Hiker yes but with the slow attack (which is actually quite fast) not the whole word is being compressed so it sounds like it's actually more dynamic like he's spitting his words out.
Great video! Inwasnin a rut for a few days with my normal method just not doing it for some shouting/screaming moments in a song I was working on. I went about this method, being objective to the source material, and they came out phenomenally. I found it handy to put a limiter (L1 in my case) prior to initial Compression and EQ as well. Very simple, but very good technique.
Man, this is one of the best vocals tutorials I've ever seen! Simple and clear! Any chance you could make a clean vocals? You know the regular stuff like The Afterimage just came to my head first as an example Btw, what's your opinion about overdrive plugin (like the TSE 808) on scream vocals? Saw few people recommend to use it but I didn't see you did it or talked about it And once again thanks for the great video!
Hey man thanks for the tip on vocal mixing sounds great and keep up the good work a lot of your mixing tips I have learned from you and then I go into my mix and do the same thing and it works great keep the good work up man
Were these vocals tracked with any sort of compression or anything? They sound amazing and the volume level is so consistent even though he's really "spitting" certain parts of those screams out.
So the reverb and delay are in the original signal? I thought people bussed the effects, not put it all on before EQ and compression?? Defnintely sounds good the way it is but the reverb tail does have an audible volume boost at the end of the phrase, is this something you leave in or automate down a little bit?
Noone else mentioned so I'm not sure but I think the vocals are way quieter than the rest of the instruments. This is really interesting though and I have a lot of trouble eqing vocals.
Awesome tutorial! If the mix I'm currently finishing kicks ass it's totally on you. Thanks a lot!! What song/band is it actually, that you're demonstating this on?
Can someone tell me what kind of scream that is? I can get a similar sound with a low fry but it doesn’t feel great so I am guessing it’s a false chord but I can’t figure out how to do a mod false chord. My low false chords sound fine though. Help!
Hi Jordan Would you recommend leaving in the vocal track breaths and dead air to give it more character as a general standard of your mixes? or do you edit these out in most mixes but you like what it did to this vocal track? cheers steve
Do you prefer single tracked screaming vocals for main parts? I've worked with some engineers that preferred doubling everything and others that liked using a single vocal. I seem to get better results with just a single track.(I double when doing effects high and low etc).
Is there any way to elegantly get rid of these little 'hiccups' in the vocals (like in the "fails me now"-part)? They seem to come from the false-chord vocal technique due to the pressure the singer applies. I'm currently mixing some vocals tracks, where these hiccups are rather prominent and compression of course makes them even more audible. Trying to EQ them out seems like a bad approach since there all over the frequency-spectrum and applying loads of EQ pretty much neuters the vocal sound. Any help would be appreciated! :-)
sounds like you got some delay on the vocal?...but i can't seem to find it in your signal chain?...or is it something else?......great video by the way!!:-)

Is that vocal line on another bus track with reverb or were they recorded that way? It seemed like there were still effects when you bypassed all the plugins. If so, what did you use? Can you make a video on that?
I appreciate this video's tips but I'm still confused. I'm just not good at mixing things. I've applied compression to my screams on a cover I'm working on and it helped a bit but yeah, I guess it doesn't help that my DAW is Audacity. I can't afford to buy one. I'm also not super good at any instruments. It's pretty discouraging to so badly WANT to record music of your own but not have the money, resources or know-how to do so.
That tutorial is awesome, but the singer really needs to learn how to breathe and kick his voice out of his diaphragm, because it really sounds like his voice is stuck in his throat and that's gonna make him lose his voice eventually. Cheers, and thanks for the tips!
