Hmm, it is difficult to give an answer because I don't really know your situation. However if you've never ever played the violin before I would probably say it's quite difficult to play by ear, but not impossible. There will be a fair amount of guesswork involved, since you don't know where your fingers should go. It would probably be faster to learn where to put your fingers to play the notes you want, and also to learn how to recognize music. It may take some time but think of it as a long-term investment - in the future you will be able to play songs much faster and easier! Both on the violin and piano. :) The alternative is you can look up violin tutorials - at the moment I do have one by Davichi (This love) ua-cam.com/video/fUWx16tbwJY/v-deo.html . (not that I'm trying to promote myself haha, it's just FYI.) It is a rather shortcut process that I'm not fond of though, because it only teaches you that one song. As opposed to learning properly and being able to play anything. Whatever you wish to do, good luck and I wish you success! ^^
