I originally found this video on Vimeo over a decade ago. The day I met my wife I was watching random videos and she saw the thumbnail for this on a playlist. We watched it together within the first hour I met her. She passed at the end of December. We had ten years together. Spent months trying to find this video again. I’m very happy I finally did.
I watch this video once every couple of months, and to be honest, nothing humbles me more and makes me appreciate what I’ve been given more than this video. I don’t care if this sounds lame but this short has given me LIFE more often than I’d like to admit. Thank you Skyler for making this masterpiece that I will show to future generations.
Hey, great animation! I'm a musician and I would like to know if I could use her in a background video for my new song, I would leave all the credits and possible links to your work! Thanks for listening!
My 5 year old (and myself) are IN LOVE with this video. After watching the ending, my little empathetic dude had an entire night of wailing himself to sleep due to the demise of “Tarzan the astronaut”. I had to quickly make up an extended ending - which he has repeatedly asked me to ask you to animate and create. He will not let it go and watched me write this. So here I am, 10 years after its creation, pitching Craterface Part 2: Crater face looks up at the sky in sadness, after the explosion of the spaceship of his astronaut friend and focuses in on a tiny spec in the sky that seems to get bigger and bigger. His eyes widen, he signals to the sky and explains a plan to save his friend as he falls from the sky. They capture him in their tongues before he hits the surface and quickly scoop up moon dust and start crunching away and spitting out random shapes, within minutes a spaceship is formed, just like the ring. They pick up his body, slide it into the spaceship and shut the door. Just as he begins to regain consciousness in the magical moon dust spaceship, they take their tongues and slingshot him into space - taking him back to his planet.
I don't why why I randomly thought of this video, but I just re-watched it three times, and it just hits so good. You can clearly tell what's happening even without dialogue, the music matches the mood, and the story itself is just amazing. Thank you for creating this. I know I absolutely loved this video when I first watched it 10+ years ago, and I enjoyed watching it again today.
Wow, that was... good. Really good. The rock guy was lonely, never interacting with anyone his entire existence despite being so near another that whole time. Then this astronaut comes by, makes fast friends, and reveals the existence of this rock girl, whom he mutually reveals the existence of the rock guy to. They don't have to be lonely anymore, the lives that had always ran parallel can finally intersect... but not without a cost. Rock guy was willing to be cut out of his foundation to meet her, even if it meant only seeing her briefly and causing his own demise (which he anticipated to be the case); he couldn't keep living a life of solitude, especially after learning there was a woman so close. The Astronaut wants to help, but is reluctant to comply if it means losing his new friend. The rock guy had his mind set, and was willing to give the astronaut a parting gift. The astronaut just couldn't say no after that, and agreed to help his friend. However, the astronaut couldn't stay, his physiology had limits, but he couldn't just leave and betray his new friend, not after he said he'd help. He knew what he had to do. Rock guy was willing to meet his fate early if it meant finally meeting the love he had been so near for so long, so the astronaut was willing to do the same to help his new friends. He set up and executed his plan quickly, time was running short. He didn't consult the rock people because he knew they'd say no, not wanting him to sacrifice himself. He said his final goodbye to the rock guy, and blasted off to his death in a final gesture of friendship. Too late, the rock people realized what the Astronaut had done. They were sad to see he had willingly met his own perish, but they knew he did it for them, and they wanted to honor the memory of their friend of only a short time and not make his sacrifice in vain. So much to say abut such a short cartoon. That is art.
