This is interesting, and make a lot of since...kinda like a denture covers the whole palate therefore you tongue adapts to it more easily. I think the key it that it is "not too thick" I find it hard to get an even coverage with a full palate retainer.
As with everyone, things slowed for a few years. Never had that happen to this extent before, in 43 years. Things are back to what they were 3 years ago, working my tail off. I planned to slow down by now, 3 more years of "cranking it out", no big deal. I'll remember you when cut back. If I can ever get myself to do that.:)
my retainers dont fit my palate and and i cannot speak properly specially when im saying words with "s". my ortho wont believe me tho. should i ask her to replace my retainers?
Cool video :) I made the experience that a trimmed acrylic plate on the top retainer is less comfortable than a completely closed one. You get used to it pretty fast and don't feel that edge so much. My speech was always better with closed ones, as long as they are not too thick
Yeah, I always figured that the big labs are "too big" to be looking up how-to videos on the internet. I seem to get the most questions from small one-person labs and in-house labs and even the brave souls trying to learn this ortho lab stuff on their own. All this is for them.
Good day,pls how do i remove trapped air from my acrylic process . My finished job is always cloudy when i use clear acrylic.how do i get a crystal clear finished job
Hello, How many liters of water should we use for curing a retainer? How do different quantities of water (more or less water) influence the aspect and result?
What separator do you use on the model before you apply the acrylic? The one we're currently using isn't great and its so tine consuming trying to separate the model and retainer, then usually left with some stone in the pallet side of the retainer, feels like I might as well not be using it at all.
hey dude I was taught to adapt the wires to the palate leaving no space but when you finish with acrylic the wires are exposed once you remove from cast. Is that why you leave a mm between cast/palate and wire?
I use acrylic separator, also called "Tin-Foil Substitute" The stuff I use is "JBC's Best Ever Separator" I just paint it on the model before I tack the wires on. As far as preventing scratching, Im not sure what you mean?
Hey! Great video! This is a technique I'd like to incorporate into my arsenal (as a dental student). May I ask the name of the tool you use for the initial trimming? I think that would be extremely useful for making interims and the like.
HUGE QUESTION: While my acrylic has been setting I've had some retainers experience shrinkage in the posterior area, ie the acrylic lifts up while setting and there is a space between the palate and the acrylic. The office I work at does not have a pressure pot so I set the acrylic using slightly warm, just above room temp water. What is causing this shrinkage? Is it b/c we don't have a pressure pot? Is it the water temp? Any help would be GREATLY appreciated! Love your vids!
You do need to make sure you are using enough liquid to wet the polymer while you are building the thickness of the retainer. but once the thickness is where you want it, I put a layer of powder to soak up any extra monomer so that it will not slump. I dont care much what happens on the surface of the retainer, as I will be trimming most of this off and exposing the acrylic that was mixed well with proper liquid powder ratio.
There are a few videos back up at "orthodudeness" here. Guess I'll slowly put them all back. I just don't like the idea of helping out large labs, no controling that. Here's to the little labs out there, never quit.:)
im not 100% sure but i think it is the same stuff. the acrylic i use is FDA approved to go in the mouth, I'm not sure if nail salons use the exact grade we do, but it is the same chemical. Methyl Methacrylate
Jimboo0825 What type of clear retainer? Is is like a clear overlay of your teeth? or is it a wire retainer with clear acrylic? if it is the later you need this: jbcandcompany.com/shopdisplayproducts.asp?id=13&cat=Standard+Acrylic+%22Clear%22+Monomers and this: jbcandcompany.com/shopexd.asp?id=996
My gf just snapped her retainer in half for the third time, she has the mold still "we cant afford to get the implant that her parents promised to pay for her when she was a kid 10+years ago after she went through brutal treatment to fix all of her teeth alignment, i have spent so much time scouring the internet just to find this answer. I am pretty confident that I can do this right.
Quick Question: Are you removing the acrylic in the posterior like I do at the 6 min. mark in the video? If you are, it may not be the best procedure for you if you dont have a pressure pot. The water my be getting under the acylic where you cut and "float" the acrylic up
That is monomer. I call it clear monomer even though it looks blue. It is actually violet tinted to counter cat the natural yellowing of regular clear monomer. Make for a super clear acrylic when finished!
Excellent video!! I learnt alot from this! but.. I'm having issues with my acrylic retainer fabrication.. Im having some very fine bubbles.. its being exaggerated when I use a clear acrylic.. how do you remedy this? I saw that your retainers are like glass.. and flawless..
RetainerDesigner hi! Yes I am using a pressure pot. Im also using Ivoclar Vivadent probase cold. This microporosities are more evident if i fabricate a TMJ splint.
Never used Vivadent Probase cold (I assume it is cold cure?) You may be taking too long building the splint. You need to get it in the pressure pot with in 10-15 minutes before the exothermic reaction gets to far and starts producing small bubbles. Also check the temerature of your room my acrylic likes it between 72 and 76 degrees F. If you neeed more time try putting your monomer bottle in the refergerator the night before...
RetainerDesigner putting the monomer is a great tip! I did considered doing that before as i was thinking the temp is affecting it, most specially im here in Dubai and its about 43C at the morning..
Noah Belton I will see if I can get my camera to take a picture of one in the dark, we have them come through the lab all the time. I will post images on my blog: DesignerRetainer.com
Yes gloves are advised. I wasn't taught to do this with gloves so it was hard for me to learn with gloves. I just have to make sure I wash my hands with soap and water after im done. Everyone has different sensitivities to monomer. If you wear gloves make sure they are the correct ones monomer can penetrate most disposable gloves. here is a link to some monomer resistant gloves. bit.ly/2O3tuhD

thank you for uploading these videos. they are really helpful especially for undergrads like me.
my retainers dont fit my palate and and i cannot speak properly specially when im saying words with "s". my ortho wont believe me tho. should i ask her to replace my retainers?
Your very kind Cade. Hope all is well with the family and kids.
Labdude.
I get my polymer and monomer from JBC and company, I will put the link in the discription.
This is how acrylic nails are made in the nail salons! Nail techs can moonlight doing this!
Yes! I have heard that Nail tech make great ortho techs! It also smells like a nail salon in an ortho lab!

may i ask you did you use auto liquid and auto powder
when i use auto powder and auto liquid it all way bubble
Much love man! Thank you soooo much for all your videos!

hey dude I was taught to adapt the wires to the palate leaving no space but when you finish with acrylic the wires are exposed once you remove from cast. Is that why you leave a mm between cast/palate and wire?
yes, exactly! you need at least .5mm of space between the wires and tissue of model. that way acrylic can flow underneath it
I use acrylic separator, also called "Tin-Foil Substitute" The stuff I use is "JBC's Best Ever Separator" I just paint it on the model before I tack the wires on. As far as preventing scratching, Im not sure what you mean?

Can you tell me the list of instrument you used including the carvers
After fabrication is it necessary to put in hot or cold water?
Hot water will make the acrylic set up (Cure) faster. You can use cold water but it will take longer to cure
Can you please tell me, which material you used for making to make the color on the base..what coloring materials do you use
I buy all my acrylics with the color already mixed in from JBC and company: www.jbcandcompany.com/shopdisplaycategories.asp?id=392&cat=Acrylics%2E%2E

How can i reduce the porosity during this process?? Pls reply...

Is the same kind of acrylic and monomer that you would use on your nails and if not would it be safe to use nail acrylic pleas answer
im not 100% sure but i think it is the same stuff. the acrylic i use is FDA approved to go in the mouth, I'm not sure if nail salons use the exact grade we do, but it is the same chemical. Methyl Methacrylate
RetainerDesigner but the nail acrylic ruins your nails and burns your skin....
Can you please tell me the exact kind of acrylic I would need to repair a broken snapped clear retainer? And would I need a powder acrylic as well?

Salt and pepper method? 🙄.
Salt and pepper as in food that would taste icky. Im no professional.
Why last u didnt pour liquid over the polymer ?
It is optional, I usually put a final coat of powder to soak up andyextra monomer, so that it doesnt slump in the pressure pot
Where can I buy this acrylic?
JBCandCompany.com
What is the name of the blue liquid?

i need a way of not getting porosities from this technique other than patting on the acrylic. Pl tell.
Pyrovate Craa are you getting big bubbles or thousands of tiny bubbles?
Are These kind of retainers repairable?
Yes, You use the same material that you build them with to repair them too.
Awesome video! very informative :)
(FYI you misspelled your website URL above.)
Johanna Sanchez Thank You for the heads up, sometimes I type sloppy :)

how does one become a retainer maker
what brand monomer and polymer do you recommend??
+Kenzie Howell Nevermind, lol. I read the description.
LabDude! The very man I learned the term "Shooting Acrylic" from! Boys are growing up fast! Hows business?
What was the transparent liquid you used?
Its called Monomer the second part of the acrylic the powder is called polymer
What is that white powter
thats actually very cool
What do you use glue?
What do you use first?
เอ จิตณรงค์ most people use the monomer first, so that the first layer of polymer has something to stick to.
Can you do some glow in the dark or images ones please
Noah Belton I will see if I can get my camera to take a picture of one in the dark, we have them come through the lab all the time. I will post images on my blog: DesignerRetainer.com
Yeah we hit a 3 year low not too long ago, but it is slowly coming back up. You gonna cut back to where it is just a hobby?
