there aren't a lot of specific directions you can go with regards to damia's abilities. Of course one could easily just make a "sultai good stuff" deck and call it a day - using a commander with powerfull card draw to "reload" their hand. But utilizing the excess lands one would draw from damia as the main focus of the deck is nothing but inspired, a simple and well rounded solution making a deck truly centered around damia's abilities. Abselutely genius, well done.
I feel like Sultai has the reputation of being a "goodstuff" color combination with a lot of decks; just running black's best removal, green's strongest ramp, and blue's biggest card draw, plus a few of the big wincons. But I think there are still places for a lot of interesting and unique decks in there. This being one of them.
I feel like it’s one of the most pushed color combos or just the color combo that has the most effective cards for commander since it’s got ramp, removal, Massive value and great finishers
Ik your blight my friend but the prices on the less then normal staples are just about the same in canada tho most of the more expensive cards are 20% if not 100% more
So we'd have to improve shipping from one country to another for this or encourage American card stores to ship internationally by making it easier perhaps a shipping deal with companies like fedex
I bought this deck after watching this video a few times, I am now going to play it for the first time... Update: 2/5 with the deck in it's first outing... super fun
So I built basically this deck with a few alterations. I put in an Ulvenwald Hydra as an extra body that gets pretty dang big in this deck. I also put in Teferi's Ageless Insight and Teferi's Tutelage for some really dumb combos. I was a little worried about having enough power/presence to compete at the table but those doubts were quickly dashed. This thing combos off like there's no tomorrow. Amazing work, Mitch!
I built the upgraded version exactly as listed. I have played it about 8 times. Deck is very good at ramp and very fun. Does not do well against fast paced decks especially 1v1 but in a multiplayer setting this works extremely well. Win con has been different each time and I have won knocking out multiple opponents in one turn. overall super fun and different take on a deck for me, Thanks Mitch!
I particularly love that you opted for a “lands matter” style because Damia is Greek for “Earth-Mother” or “Of the Land,” a minor deity of fertile earth. Tons of flavor!
Great video! Cards that care about card draw could be good in this. Lorescale Coatl would get 7 +1/+1 counters each turn, Ominuous Seas would get 7/8 counters needed for a 8/8 token, Burlfist oak would become a 16/17 on your turn etc
My Damia deck was centered around skip your draw step cards. Usually the goal was to kinda just sit there and get ignored at the table while the other three players are building board presence. And then I get Omniscience out and it’s a bit too late. I actually did run One With Nothing in the deck as well, probably only used it once. The deck also had a convoluted infinite turn combo using Azusa, Crucible of Worlds, and Walk the Aeons.
Was planning on doing something very similar, so this was very helpful. You did a few things I don't plan on using, but there were definitely a few things that I hadn't thought of yet in there too.
Love this deck, have even made a few minor changes to it, including a Lotus Cobra to go with Patron of the Moon for a second way to generate infinite landfall. Even though it isn't anywhere near competitive level, it absolutely gets a few stares when it only take 6 or 7 turns to win while opponents are still winding up. I think the cards that get the most eyeballs are the Cobra and Patron combo along with Recycle and Null Profusion for the sheer value they generate.
And here I spent my Magic budget this week on cards for Shrine Tribal :( What a great deck tech though, and thanks for keeping the new format! It's great to see you on the videos, Mitch!
Yeah this deck is very epic. The reason I know this is because my Damia deck is very similar to this for years. Same goal and very similar themes and finishers. It works really well for scaling with the power level of any group.
Having been watching your videos for awhile Mitch, its so interesting to see how things change over time. The new graphics are very professional they look Great! Thanks again for the video!
I actually built a damia deck for my brother in a similar way only I went a mill/zombie game plan for him. It uses alter of the brood and dementia plus both of the landfall crabs. It also has mainly snow land basics in it and a number of ways to make zombies for the alter to eat. Great deck Mitch.
I use that bounce land combo in my Tatyova deck with simic growth chamber and sakura-tribe scout. It's a fun combo to pull off and not too broken because it can be easily stopped. I like using it my lower power level decks when I'm playing with new people, or when we have a more casual night with our regular group.
i changed a couple of the cards around like added grim tutor instead of diabolic and dryad of the ilysian grove instead of walking atlast and beat a $1k dollar deck your decks are amazing.
I just finished an Ajani-focused budget deck with Shalai, Voice of Plenty. So many of the ramp cards here I had in my deck or my maybe board. Shoutout to Summer Bloom and Search for Tomorrow which were some of my favorites to discover during the build!
I really enjoy my (non-budget) Damia deck. Emergent ultimatum is a budget all-star in Sultai to search out your win-cons. It gets me an army of tokens by finding and casting Army of the Damned and Avenger of Zendikar, because nobody wants to give me Omniscience.
I built a Damia deck a while back and made it Gorgon tribal and put all the vraska planeswalkers as well. It’s main way to win is by getting a lot of lands on the field getting zendikars resurgent on the field to double my mana and use all that mana to torment of hailfire. The only other way I won was I managed to pull off vraska golgari queens ultimate ability while having archetype of imagination out and one shot my opponents
It's crazy I just built a new deck around Damia This morning I'm going with a more aggressive green blue / mutate / splash black. But this episode showing up in my feed right after sleeved it up is pretty crazy
This tech is absolutely dirty on a budget. I ran a variant with Omnath Locus of Mana, Kruphix God of Horizons, and Helix Pinnacle but this landfall version is something I'm definitely going to try.
I once tried to make a living land edh Dec,but it just didn't get the job done. I also had a pretty standard Damia deck. Don't know why I never thought of Damia lands matter. Finally have a use for my Damia.
jolrael mwonvuli recluse would be a neat add into the deck. Her trigger would occur pretty much every turn and her pump spell can buff up any of the weaker tokens.
Funnily enough I just made a Damia deck two days ago and took it in a completely different route. I went for what I'm calling "flash tribal", where I don't do anything but play lands on my turn and always dump my hand before my next upkeep.
a little scray i got my hands on a damia and wanted to make a commander deck, but i didnt really know what to do with her and then you made this video mitch. i am pretty happy know because this video gave me much insperation
I can recommend Teferis Ageless Insight for a Damia Deck. Because the draw of Damia is in the upkeep and not in the draw step, we can draw twice that much cards.
With the recent reprinting of Crop Rotation, I think it's now a good budget option (less than 1.00). In this deck, it can enable that infinite combo as it's basically an extra copy of a bounce land. Great deck idea!
Manabond is an affordable method of dumping tons of lands into play as well as scrapping any unwanted hands to benefit off of Damia's draw effect. It might be a good card to include in the deck.
I run magistrate's scepter, inexorable tide, and teferi that untaps 4 permanents in my Damia to have Infinite turns. I also run Nyxbloom ancient, zendikars Resurgent, and terraformer and relmwright* to make my cryptghast have maximum effect
There’s some low cost whenever you draw a card out +1 on creature. I’ll stagger that with landfall and I think I’ll have a winner. With the discarding spells. Maybe throw return all creatures from graveyard to battlefield as a game winning turn
I've wanted to build Damia since the original pre-con, but I've never figured out what to do with her. This looks like fun, and is more than simply "she hopefully draws into more good stuff".
With that much acceleration and discard, I'd try to fit a Mnemonic Betrayal in the list too. It's a super versatile card, you can both use it to nab a piece of removal or some other utility in a pinch or to set up a huge game-ending play.
@@winssports4830 It was less about not knowing what the mana base was, and more about Mitch cutting the Mana Base for the deck from the breakdown in the video. Obviously, you can always check the link to the decklist and see exactly what he went with for lands.
That's fair but he probably figured there's no point in saying the manabase when it's all basics aside from a few cards but yeah I guess it would've been helpful.
@@winssports4830 I would also want to question why Circuitous Route would be cut instead of Migration Path if you would put in Azusa. IMO, Circuitous Route is the more superior choice in terms of mana ramp and fixing since you can fetch gates. If your mana base has gates, in this 3-color commander you can clearly choose which 2 out of the 3 gates you need or maybe even Gateway Plaza though you need to pay 1 extra. Cycle is nice but you can only get 2 colors with Migration Path if you cast it whilst Route gets you 3 colors.
Dread Summons can replace Empty the Pits. Gelatinous Genesis can work to put out multiple big tokens. Nissa, Steward of Elements is cheap and would work with the deck.
I would suggest cards like Trade Routes for draw, Spitting Image as a big late game spell, Deathsprout for removal, Mutani, Yavimaya's Avatar to close games out... and, as for upgrades, The Gitrog Monster for more ramp/draw and Sylvan Safekeeper to keep Damia alive.
I think I would have added Psychic Corrosion and Patient Rebuilding to the deck for some light mill. Start with the Damia trigger first and your opponents mill upwards of 14 cards. Then the Patient Rebuilding trigger to mill one opponent for three and a chance of milling all opponents for an additional 6 cards, making the potential of milling all opponents for upwards of 20 cards per turn. They can't handle that for long, as it would put them on the clock for about 4 to 5 turns. I would also put Horizon Chimera in the deck to combo off of Tatyova (Whenever you gain life, draw a card.). With just these few changes, and under the right circumstances, you could easily mill everyone out in three turns.
If you don’t mind your cards getting “removed from the game” the here’s a fun one for you to add that’s sure to make a big impact! All the way from Mirage, Cadaverous Bloom! It’s an enchantment for 3BG. It allows you to exile a card form your hand and add GG or BB to your mana pool. It’ll run you about 3$ but I think it’d be way worth it!
Awesome deck, but keep in mind one serious thing: Using a card like Elvish Pioneer to "put" a land into the battlefield is not the same as "playing" it. If you have Recycle or Null Profusion out, you will _not_ draw a card by "putting" lands into the battlefield. In addition, if somebody makes you discard your hand while Recycle is out, unless you have some other ways to draw cards (Damia is out), you ain't drawing another card.
This looks a lot like my pauper edh Slimefoot build, at least near the start, with 30 something ramp cards, Golden Pig Ashnod's Altar, if we're using your terminology. Although there's a Silver Pig in there as well which is the only magic card in the game's history that has both Convoke and Buyback but the name eludes me at the moment. Very underrated card I think, may as well read, "for every 5 creatures you control with at least 1/5 being green, get 1 free instant speed 1/1 saproling and you can do it again as much as you like", and is especially good since if you have enough creatures you don't need mana. If you have 16 lands/mana on board you can use Slimefoot to get 4 saprolings then use this card to get a free 5th by tapping the saprolings and Slimefoot. That may not seem very good though till you figure out about all the damn ramp :P
Ive been looking into creating my first commander deck. Looked through all (roughly 1000) possible commanders and then repeatedly xut my selection down. Damia made top 6, the last round, but I went with Experiment Kraj instead. Might have to reverse my decision now that theres a budget deck guide available, though... My kraj deck was over 100 bucks
This was my first deck, and still my my favorite. She's Greek/theros theme. Hydras and a thornbite staff... she's an awesome commander, from when gorgans were gorgans, not hipster pirates chasing dinosaurs and falling in love... gag me with a spoon
So I work at Tcgplayer and I'm on the team that ships cards out. I've packed this deck or parts of it at least 5 times today.
lolol. This is proof of the influence of these videos

Did the deck have any specific weakness that stood out?
Sweet more Sultai commander deck techs is always nice
Nice!
I've owned Damia ever since I bought my Miemoplasm deck, way back in 2011... But never knew where she would be a nice Commander.
Until now!
Is mimeoplasm sweet? It is right near the top of my list of commanders I want to try
I like that you didn't feel the need to make it a round number. $41 is great for a budget deck.
Blessing of Leeches seems like some spicy tech! Thanks for showing us more obscure cards.

Regenerate for 0 is worth 1 life every turn.

I run chasm skulker and toothy
This is exactly the direction my damia deck is. I don't run the discard stuff, but I run a couple moonfolk to bounce lands and replay them

This was my first deck, and still my my favorite. She's Greek/theros theme. Hydras and a thornbite staff... she's an awesome commander, from when gorgans were gorgans, not hipster pirates chasing dinosaurs and falling in love... gag me with a spoon
Haha yup! Damia > Vraska
Thanks bro loys of great ideas for my Damia deck =)
i missed the budget decktechs, nice!
Probably a pain to do, but I miss the prices below each individual card as it comes up. Big fan of the deck tech constraints, good stuff Mitch
man i've been playing damia wrong. i usually just tutor up an aluren and go nuts with rats so i always have a fresh batch in hand
clicking like just because Damia is my love
I miss the prices being there for each card, but I get that it was probably a lot of extra work
Sweet deck tech. Heads up, empty the pits isn’t going to surprise opponents too much as those zombies will come in tapped.
Since it’s an instant though you can just cast it right before your turn
Mitch, I think you forgot to go over the mana base
Watching on my break at work
