    Hello Friend - I just pulled my R8 out of the closet after 20 years and this fix is going to save my life. Now I can transfer all my 25 year old recordings into a DAW. Thanks !!

      raybbj Thanks for the comment. It’s very rewarding to know that my video can help people worldwide. Your multi vision music videos are awesome, obviously you’re no stranger to multitrack recording!

      I went to the Hobby store today. Got the 3/16" collar locks and drilled them out to 7/32". I just installed them and my machine is running like a champ now. I seriously owe you a beer bro. Thanks again! And on a side note. After recording on a PC for the last 20 years, I can't believe how warm and smooth the analog tape sounds. I'm definitely gonna do a project on this old machine one day.

      @@raybbj Excellent! You should make a multitrack multi window music video with the R8 featured. That would be cool.

    Nice and creative fix. You have to learn to think out of the box when something is old enough that it no longer has new spare parts available, be it older cars, or audio equipment like this. Thanks for sharing this.

    Nice work. After watching it I came up with a 3rd fix. I figured if I could twist a standard nut onto the plastic post it would serve the same purpose. Luckily, it turns out that a 1/4-20 hex nut will thread itself just enough to squeeze the hairline crack perfectly to allow the pulley to install over the motor shaft. Obviously, the cool part is this approach avoids all those steps you presented using the brass collar. I didn't push my luck by trying to run it all the way down, just enough to seat it strongly. I may add some adhesive or epoxy later, if it fails, but so far it runs beautifully. Thanks for scratchin' me noggin'....lol

      Sounds great. I didn't think of that, probably because using the collars is just where my head was at. Screwing a nut on certainly seems easier and to the same effect, if the nut fits right as you say.

    This is a much better solution than glueing it on. With glueing I'm concerned about being able to get a new belt on without either stretching the hell out of it or even breaking it. Or possibly breaking the little plastic wheel. This solution allows you to remove the wheel and easily install a new belt without risk. Thanks, man; great idea.

      Not just that but there is a lot of back and forth torque action on these parts. I just can't see any kind of glue holding on to that small polished steel shaft under these conditions for the long term.

    2021. We seem to have a fix. Thanks a lot for sharing this.
    I might try with steel putty.

    Dude thank you so much for posting this I have been looking for a fix for this for awhile and there is a forum that just has the glueing steps but that does NOT work. This is going to save me a lot of headaches!

    Great hint! I have tried it ... with partial success. Fast FORWARD and REWIND are working well, but PLAY speed is slower than it should be, just about half. Any hint for that?

    • @stagesixx
      @stagesixx  3 роки тому

      Is your speed control knob turned down? Other than that I don't know, the slipping pulley problem is the only thing I've had on my R8.

      @@stagesixx Thank you for your reply. After properly cleaning all axis and parts in the pathway my R8 now runs smoothly. Great. Thank you again for this perfect hint in your two videos!

    Hello,
    Fostex is a great machine, I have one. However, to your knowledge, is there a way to get Fostex R8 play back a tape that was recorded at 3-3/4" speed?

    • @stagesixx
      @stagesixx  2 роки тому

      I doubt even an electronics wizard could do that as it was designed to run at high speed for highest quality. Also, a 3 3/4 ips would likely have a two channel track configuration and will not play back properly on the Fostex 8 track head, I’ve tried it.

    Hey man I was wondering if you could help me with some channel issues on my R8? Channels 3 and 6 have no signal at all. The lights still work though so its fully just a connection issue I would assume. I wouldn't have thought the channel cards were fried as channels 3 and 6 are not correlated at all in terms of the link (i.e. how 1 and 2 equate to 5, and 6 and 3 and 4 equate to 7 and 8). Just my thoughts. Any advice or anything would be grand!

      I've only ever had the problem with the drive pulleys on my R8. Never had any electronical issues, so can't help you there.
