  • Roger Linn came to Pyramind and demoed the Linnstrument, an innovative MIDI instrument that brings the subtle expressive performance gestures of fine acoustic instruments to the control of modern electronic sounds. He also took questions from the audience about his career and other products he has developed.
    Roger Linn is a designer of electronic music products, best known for his invention of the first digital sampling drum machine in 1980 and used on countless 80s hits. He also designed Akai’s MPC series of drum machines, used on countless 90s hip hop hits and credited as a significant influence in the evolution of hip hop.

    I love how Roger Linn embraces technology, rather than getting bitter and complain to young musicians for not being able to play "real" instruments. He gives them a new way to express themselves.

      i agree this is like a futuristic pedal steel it unlocks some sounds that i thought synthesis wasnt able to do. reminds me of when the pedal steel talk box was used for the first time by pete drake on his song forever (im only 25 but i love studying musics history and how it has evovled). there are just some articulations that just speaks to the soul that you dont get from just playing the right notes.

      Honestly I’d been waiting for an instrument like this for years. I looked around and the only thing was an akai ewi which is awesome in its own right but it has battery and reliability problems. The linnstrument actually seems like the first legitimate midi device besides the ewi and rolli keyboard which the Rolli never had anyone play anything using all its features to actually create music that didn’t seem like hey that’s a guy playing midi device. The linnstrument , modern keyboard and ewi are the only legitimate leading midi instruments that like he said aren’t just suited for making loop tracks that you control with knobs.

    wow this man has always been ahead of the times since the Linn drums. He's just pioneered the tech so a whole generations of musicians adopt to take music ahead, drum machines in the 70's and CPE now.

    This is an amazing instrument this man has invented! Bravo! Mr. Linn! You are to be applauded and commended! I admire your genius! ! He’s my third favorite musical inventor after Robert Moog and Les Paul. He also invented the Linndrum which was the basis of Princes sound! This instrument has a Moog like sound to it combined with a touchpad playability. It’s a brilliant design! All it’s waiting for is some child prodigy or genius to create some brilliant compositions on it and create something entirely new that we haven’t heard before! It has great potential! Where’s Mozart? Can you imagine what he could do with an instrument like this? Something amazing I believe! Glenn Gould was a brilliant piano player too! If only he was alive, I can imagine him playing this brilliantly and taking us to other worlds of expression!
    This instrument plays beautifully and sounds great! Thanks for the demonstration Mr. Linn! This sounds like the Future! But we don’t have great composers anymore, only posers!

    I got mine about a month ago after discovering it for the first time about two months ago. A bit late to the party, but better late than never lol! Once I saw what it was I could not wait to get one in my hands. Granted I am a keyboard and fret player so that gave me a bit of a head start, but I was playing it the first day I got it. So easy if you just realize that tho it is reminiscent of keys and frets, it is a new instrument that affords new ways of looking at and doing things. After I got it I realized it was everything I had been looking for in a controller for VST's. My new favorite instrument! Thank you Roger. You out did yourself on this one.

    Impressive, perfect for Guitarists looking for a midi type guitar, the sounds are interesting, the Violin sounds decent on some notes, but not like a violin on the connection of the Notes where you can hear the Midi sound.
    This type of Technology would have a great partnership with Native's Kontak, which has some of the best instrument sounds in the world.

    I love the way a pioneer in electronic instruments answers the question "how long did it take you to develop this?" with 4 years. I was smiling and laughing, and said out loud (to my computer) "a lifetime". You can see he's excited at what he and his team have managed to create. I'm saving up for one at the moment.

    17:34 I agree so much with Roger Linn here. I think that I could spend more time making music instead of learning every interval in every key for example. On the guitar I play standard tuning, and the best advantage to isomorphic all fourths is the possible (open) chords. I do not see an advantage that would be worth it for me on the trad piano keyboard. I love pitch bends! I've programmed them in a lot of my songs and I bend notes without thinking about it when singing. Right now I think I'd learn Linnstrument first, then piano, so I can play a piano at a university for example.

    I have to say of all the midi instruments besides the ewi which it has its own problems but it is also a really good instrument I would have to say all of them that would be like an actual instrument not just like a drum pad or like a studio accessory to control the knobs and all said this you can actually play this thing like an instrument and you can assign controllers to the buttons and play the instrument without having to use knobs and just play like a guitar or something and that’s why I looked at this one and I really couldn’t see anything else on the market that really did this except the ewi and one other the Eigenharp but the egeinharp didn’t really sounded like it works well and I never saw anybody actually perform it well it always seemed like it was extremely difficult to play and the linnstrument one seems like it’s intuitive to play so I’m gonna check it out. The eigenharp was the closet thing to this expression but it was too many gimmicks crammed in to a device and it did seem intuitive to play and the eigenharp is 3k just to get the Tau or 600 for their pick but they aren’t built to the quality of their alpha which is like 6k plus the instrument is sold by a German company and they only make them to order and require a 6 month wait plus you must use their proprietary box to use it you can’t just plug the eigenharp directly in without extra hardware like an electric guitar can be plugged strait into a sound card you can’t do that with an eigenharp or even straight into a computer you must use an intermediary device. The linnstrument doesn’t have any marketing videos really but it does have videos of its users actually making good music with it which sells it better than a poorly made marketing ad with gradeschool sounding hip hop beats. This thing actually seems like I could lead a show with it.

    So cute to see him being a total grandpa that doesn't get it when it comes to modern music and at the top of his instrument making game at the same time
    It must be these darn on off switches

    His fingertips are really moving fast in a back and forth motion. I want to know if this becomes painful on your finger joints over time. Does anyone have any experience playing this instrument?

    • @neobaggins3718
      @neobaggins3718 3 роки тому +1

      I have played violin for 20 years. He’s mimicking the technique for vibrato on unfretted stringed instruments. I can tell you it’s not painful at all. If it is, I expect you’re doing it wrong.
      It’s not bending or sliding your finger, it’s rolling your finger tip. Much more precise. Also, as a violinist, you tend to do a lot of sliding for position changes. That also doesn’t hurt. I have a Linnstrument 128 arriving in a day or two, and if I find my assessment is wrong, I’ll update.

  • @fredeatstheworld308

    i love this instrument but i think i will never own this because it is so expensive :( so innovative it will change how people will look at electronic music this is pretty much a pedal steel guitar for synths.

    • @neobaggins3718
      @neobaggins3718 3 роки тому +1

      It’s by no means cheap, but it’s achievable. $1k (or $900 if you find a demo unit) for the 128 key model. Yeah, there’s a lot of cool stuff for less, but as far as I can tell, nothing that really compares.
      Even something like the Continuum Fingerboard, which is $5k, is essentially just an interesting take on a keyboard synth. The linnstrument is it’s own instrument. Yes it relies on software synthesis for the sounds, but if anything that adds to the versatility, especially since it can be powered by a smart phone or tablet.
      Short story long, it costs the same as a 49 key Rolli, or an upper mid range keyboard, or a lower mid range violin or cello. It seems daunting, but if you buy Starbucks every day, cut that out for half a year and stash that money and you’ll have your linnstrument.

    _"The violin really, it's a horrible user interface"_
    I mean what were the systems analysts thinking on that job? No adequate establishing of the user requirements or consideration of the user journey.
    They were obviously Apple users.

    • @KentBuchla

      This will control any MIDI or MIDI-TO-CV converter. In short; yes, your analogue synth can be controlled by the Linnstrument via MIDI-TO-CV converter.

    Yeah, it's awesome. The problem is that even the very best modeled instruments are still totally unconvincing. Sure, I'd rather play a violin that way. But it doesn't sound anything like a violin. It sounds terrible.
