Godzilla vs. Megalon is like that one fling you had in college with your “just friends” friend. Every time, you wake up in disbelief, vowing it’s over, yet you’re back for more next week. It’s a little pathetic, but honestly, she's just too comfy to let go, and you both like the cozy.

Great review and lol at the way you described Megalon throughout the video, truly the series loveable screwball. This film also holds a special place in my heart since it was the first Goji film I ever saw when I was 4. Your Godzilla meme video rpg segment with Goro and Hiroshi that you made years ago was how I found your channel and subbed, that edit was absolutely hilarious. Happy Godzilla day everyone!

For good or bad this was the first Godzilla movie I saw on a New Jersey TV station in 1978 or 1979. I was mesmerized! My dad was heavily into Star Trek and that started it for it and seeing Godzilla vs. Megalon solidified my science fiction tastes for the following decades. Is it the best Big G movie? Nope. Is it a fun, "gateway" movie for young kids like I was at the time? Yep. Stupid. Yep. Silly? Yep. But hey here I am now, almost 50 years later, and still a G fan.

Such an incredibly obscure film. Damn shame that the only psychical home media release was from Arrow Video twenty-eight years ago with only five units printed overall, which all had to be earn in a deadly battle royal competition held in Cardiff, one that no one ever showed up for, forcing Arrow Video to give said five copies to British character actor Peter Bull who hid it away within his extensive teddy bear collection deep beneath the Earth's surface. Thank you for shedding light on this one, Za Gorudan - many teddy bears died to create this review.

Riichiro Manabe managed to make an EVEN more crazy psychedelic jazz score for this, than for Hedorah! The Godzilla suit is adorable, but also the leanest, and best for fight scenes! You can also Google-Map their then-modern apartment, and it's STILL there! It's a total mess, but I love this film!

This was my first Godzilla movie. When I was just a kid, I had a cheap, dubbed VHS tape of it that I watched plenty of times. It wasn't until I was much, _much_ older that I started getting into Godzilla movies for real, but I'll always remember that crappy old tape from my youth.

Quite possibly the most famous 'Ultraman-like' of them all, not counting TsuPro's other heroes, such as Redman, Mirrorman and Gridman! This is a film which delights in its own quirkiness, and one which took the unique tone of the Tokusatsu Boom and embraced it with open arms. It's wonky and rough around the edges, but at the same time carries its tone and plays it completely straight. People nowadays may dismiss it for its far more lighthearted tone compared to the films before and after it, but it's impossible to really discuss the Godzilla series' popularity without this film being a part of it. It boosted the franchise to new heights of attention in the west, and has largely coloured the perception of Godzilla too - most of the time, when someone refers to Showa Godzilla as being a superhero, they're probably referencing this film! I highly recommend checking this one out.

It's dull fun with good monster stuff and great creature design but nothing else ...and that's fine. But for me, It was fun at 9 but 20 years later I crave more from entertainment than just mindless action. I think Modern Ultraman strikes a great balance between fun action and engaging storytelling. I don't hate this movie though, I love a lot about it, but it's not even near the top of my watch list.

These movies were dubbed in Hong Kong, where they speak/spoke the Queen's English. And the Queen's English has an accent where they say words that end in "a" with an "er" sound. It's not just "Godzilla", it can be any word ending in an A sound.

Other than just once, I don't recall any if these Jet Jaguars/Ultraman live shows being shown in my neck ofthe woods even though Godzilla was a Sunday afternoon regular back then on TV. Though we had the whole mecha-theme thanks to then new Shogun Warriors comic and loosely connected toys (which unfortunately, my area only saw thanks to comic book drawn ads). I think these wont be as impressive to me now without the lens of nestalgia but still nice to know so many unseen gems exist. Also, it's interesting that shortening attention spans of youths was already an issue shaping productions back then. I remember when "instant" foods seemed impressive and TV dinners amazingly quick at only about twenty-five or so minutes. I wonder after all these decades what the average kid attention span is clocking in at now.

Hi there ZaGorudan. Love your channel and I hope you get more likes and subs. I see this film as a guilty pleasure and I've been writing my own fan-fic version of it. It's titled, It's called Godzilla vs. the Kabulon Brothers: The Undersea Kingdom's SOS Strategy.
Instead of one, there are two Megalon's. Both are robot's representing Seatopia’s ancient guardians from long ago. I also changed Megalon from Kabulon because I felt this new name fits better. One of them causes a volcanic eruption and earthquake on Monster island, sending the monsters fleeing except for Godzilla. After a battle, Godzilla chases Megalon to Japan. Goro Ibuki and his younger brother Hiroshi Ibuki see the second Megalon after it drains the water from Lake Kitayama. Instead of being villain's, the Seatopian’s are victims of the nuclear tests and help Goro improve Jet Jaguar. I also improved and expanded on Seatopia's history and cut out the part about them being allies with the M Space Nebula aliens since it's never explained how they came to know each other. So no Gigan in my story. Sorry.
I made Goro and Hiroshi brothers instead of friends in the movie. I also added in a new character such as Einus. She is a Seatopian princess who helps them against Ana, another Seatopian who is controlling the Megalon Brothers. In the film there was no given reason why JJ was created. But now there is. In a flashback, you learn that JJ was a project by Goro and Hiroshi's parents for the propose of fighting monsters until they are both killed during Gigan and King Ghidorah's rampage through Tokyo in Godzilla vs. Gigan. It's not the most original idea. You see it in other tokusatsu shows at that time, but what else are you going to do with a giant robot. Let it fight monsters, no duh!
Jet Jaguar is later upgraded in the story as an advanced A.I. and can talk just like in the Godzilla SP anime. He has new abilities, ranging from a finishing move called the Plasma Beam he fires from his wrists when he crosses them in a X fashion. Jet Jaguar can also fire a taser-like attachment from is right arm and a deploy a pepper-spray from his left arm. To freeze his enemy’s, Jet Jaguar can shoot a liquid nitrogen spray from his mouth.
So what do you think? Do any of you have any ideas that can improve Godzilla vs. Megalon? Let me know by replying please. And I hope you do more Godzilla movie reviews.

Me, I love this one because it's unrepentant cheese and unapologetic about its low budget, and in the end? It's Kaiju Wrestling Federation to the max in the best way. Unlike the modern movies, I don't feel like it's insulting my intelligence, either. I call this iteration Puppy-Goji! Me, I thought Jet Jaguar was really cool in how goofy he is and still do, and if you've not watched Dante Dotson's comedy voice acting video about this one, you should, it is FUNNY.

I had this movie on VHS, i think i wanted it due to the awesome 'twin towers battle' post art on the box (which obviously is nowhere in the film).
Gigan and Megalon make sense as an evil duo, both having weapons for arms. They feel like monsters inspired from children's drawings.
Still holds charm to me now, and the Criterion edition being in proper wide screen with accurate subtitles certainly elevates the film. Its still a silly movie, but its a decent silly movie.

"Let's get this clip out of the way"
You act like that isn't 10 pounds of awesome in a five pound bag... ~_~
It's worth pointing out that despite the assertion of Toho's international poster, the Seatopians are not related to Mu. In the Japanese dialogue, it is explained that the Seatopians are what became of the people of Lemuria, which was the legend of Atlantis/Mu in the Indian Ocean.
Excuse me, but this "Gigan is a coward" propaganda has got to stop. Gigan leaves when he's lost. That is not cowardice; this is a concept of self-preservation. The one time Gigan SHOULD have left, it got him killed. Cowards do not put up the fierce fighting that Gigan does each time he shows up. They run away at the first sign of trouble. And Gigan doesn't seem to give a damn about Godzilla. That isn't particularly smart, but it isn't cowardice.
Everyone talks about how "there was a push to steer Godzilla away from his dark, nuclear origins." But what people don't seem to grasp is that the Godzilla they're referring to is dead. The Godzilla of "Godzilla vs. Megalon" is a second Godzilla that appeared in 1955 who was never as angry or violent as the 1954 one. When he surfaces in Japan, he generally stays to the countryside where nobody lives and is constantly harassed by the military for the sins of the first one. Chronologically, he never even steps foot into Tokyo until 1971 and doesn't destroy Tokyo until 1999. So, THIS Godzilla they're telling stories about never had a "dark nuclear origin." He was just discovered on an island in a grudge match with Angilas and it went from there.
While we may not know where the kid who created Red Arone is, we do know that he was absolutely aghast when he saw Jet Jaguar for the first time.
Monster Island did NOT sink into the ocean (nor part of it). The stock footage of islands being destroyed at the beginning of the film are supposed to be islands in and around the Aleutian Island chain near Alaska--you know, where the nuclear test was. Monster Island is just rocked by the explosions because they wanted to show that the reach of the tests was going halfway around the world down into the South Pacific. Monster Island is not destroyed in this movie. They even shot some more sequences of Godzilla on Monster Island that unfortunately weren't used.
Haters can eat it; this movie is my comfort Godzilla movie.
