Ben Phelan I Kickstarted this one but also own LoWD. Too bad you don't have it anymore, hopefully you did play LoWD with Scoundrels of Skullport. Corruption is one of the best mechanisms ever.
Shipwrights is a card game with drafting and resource management that is a race to build ships. Explorers is a tile laying point salad. Rune Saga ties all 3 together and let's you complete an objective to give you a special ability in the next game of the series when you play. Great system.
I played LoW with the expansion probably 35 times. Fun game but I had my fill of it. It was just getting too straightforward. This, Yedo and Age of Empires 3 all have replaced LoW as my go to worker placement games.
Stumbled upon this while checking out Explorers of the North Sea. I love worker placement & this seems like two-for-one worker placement + removal. Great explanation!
Thanks for the tutorial.... I will get my copy today, so I think I dot need to read the rulebook, My favourite boardgame channel in youtube... Cheers from Spain Rodney...much appreciated...
Thanks so much for the video! Thinking about getting this to the table tomorrow. Why is it my most recently acquired games get played before the dozens of others that have been sitting on my shelf of shame for months? They must be so jealous.
These older videos are a bit disappointing. Where's the drama? Where's the suspense? WHERE'S THE BOX FLIP?!? I'm only kidding but it has become your signature move. I knew of the box flip from friends before I had ever watched a video of yours. Another excellent video. This game looks great and I feel ready to dive right in now after another wonderful explanation of the rules. Thank you again as always.
Your instruction is succinct and clear, and very well written. Out of curiosity, do you do this for a living as well? Instructional Design or training? Great stuff all around. My favorite go-to channel for learning a new game.
Thanks for the kind words Darin. This is what I do for a living now, but teaching wasn't a specific part of my work before I started UA-cam. I have always enjoyed learning though, and I've tried to pay attention to techniques that I've found helpful as a learner, myself.
I heard this game creates a lot of conflict among players, as it has lot of take that moments. But that did not become apparent based on the instructions. What do think? In which situation would the take that happen? Thanks! Great video as usual.
Hey DTM, in my videos I focus on teaching, and don't weigh in on player experiences, or opinion based assessments because I find they are always so varied. One group will think a game is too "take that", another will say there's isn't enough. Sorry I can't be a help in that area.
Rodney, Great instructional video for a fantastic game. If you get a chance I recommend that you play the other games in this series as they are all very good as well. I do feel that this game is the best of the 3. Keep up the great work.
Amazing you did a video for this game. And amazing it already has so many views/comments. For me, at least, the North Sea Trilogy seems impossible to find, extremely obscure (ok, I suppose I can always buy it first-party...). I'm glad you can bring some light to the series, Rodney! Hopefully this'll make some shops, sites carry it!
Do the Vikings ever really have a decent chance of "losing" a raid anywhere, which looks like it would be the failure to acquire the minimum battle points to score the lowest VP? I kind of get the impression that you just pay a certain amount of resources and make sure that your crew is strong enough, and that the dice are just nothing more than sort of a little extra "oomph" if you think you might need it. If that's the case, it just doesn't feel like there is much of any uncertainty in a raid. Just waltz in and get your reward. Our do we have to assume that the Vikings can never lose because of the fear they instill and also for their great warrior prowess? I'd like to see some real tension in these raids. If I'm wrong, please explain to clarify this. In all other respects, this looks like one really cool game. Thanks much for such a great presentation 🙂
This is a tough one to answer, as it will depend on your groups play style. Everyone can wait until they have enough strength to be sure of a success, but taking a lucrative spot first can be advantageous, so it depends on how long you’re willing to wait to build up your forces, relative to the other players.
Okay. I guess the actual playing out of the game will bring these dynamics into view. I'm quite sure the game was designed carefully to make sure it works properly. Thanks, Rodney. Keep up the good work.
Hey there, I'm always happy to try to help with rules questions, but if the answer is provided in the video, than I have to direct you there. You'll find an index in the description to help you find the section you might be looking for.
Question one merchant card with town hall ability. It says take the action of a building as if you placed your worker there. Does the color in that case matter?
Hey Shawn, I avoid answering questions about individual card effects (it's a bit too much for me as one person covering so may games). This might be something to follow up about on BoardGameGeek.
Hi Rodney. Do you know which edition of this game you are showing? The picture on Amazon’s website has Renegade’s “R” logo on the bottom right corner of the front of the box...which I think is the 2nd Edition. Do you know what the differences are, if any?
The version with an R is the one published by Renegade Games - I'm showing the one originally published by Garphill Games. As far as I know, there are no differences between the versions.
We don't understand the recruiters play value. Can you please clarify if I get to add the recuiter and ANOTHER crew member or if it just means I add the recruiter to my crew? Thanks!
When I attack having 5 vikings in the team but 3 are required / minimum what about special ability of each card and attack points? Do I have to choose 3 vikings who attack and only their points and abilities are taken into consideration or whole team (5 cards) is counted? PS. In the village when we work instead of attack abity of all bought vikings works, right?
After placing a worker on a building can I remove a worker from a raid location? Had our first game where we had no more gray workers since they were all on raid locations.
So each player is playing with the resources at the bottom and raiding the areas at the top? So then each player is kind of playing off what the other players have done?
I'm not sure how much you've played it, but I'm curious. If one player starts getting into the Raids, is it possible that they pull ahead from someone who is just working in the village? I'd be worried it would get too lopsided where the people working in the village end up way behind with no hopes of catching up. Are the two well balanced?
Most of the time you are fairly neck-and-neck on your progress and the need for provisions and rebuilding your crew after they are killed off means you must alternate between raiding and working.
The game has a habit of balancing out - there are more than one way to win the game. An early Raider may get caught out later if they haven't built a good resource engine.
Funny enough, this is the one game of the trilogy I don't have cos me and a buddy got all three together when Explorers was on Kickstarter and we decided that if we wanna play it as a trilogy, we'd get together with all three of our games, if not, he keeps Raiders while I keep Shipwright and Explorers ^o^ (I got the Runesaga expansion too so that we can play all 3 games as a campaign)
what I like about the trilogy is: ~ they change scale, from village life building ships in #1 through raiding in this #2 to a broader exploration in #3 (perhaps finding Canada!) ~ the theme but also a number of elements are consistent throughout including: use of icons and of course the brilliant art by The Mico. ( see Valeria set of card games for more of his work). ~ the final Time Saga expansion to all three that lets you turn the! into a campaign. Watch out for a new Kickstarter by When/Garphill in 2017 offering more expansions -also allowing you to pick up core games.
Yeah. Same foundation and processes as you said, and Champions does have that interesting press-your-luck side to it. That was done on purpose. Basically a hybrid of Euro and "Ameritrash". I think it's great to have two Viking games that both offer a different take on things. Nice to have some real variety out there in "gameland". I like that Champions has us go after all kinds of beasties that are more life-threatening, and thus the dice mechanism to reflect that (though there are mitigations available, especially now through the expansions). Raiders has more of the Euro flavor to it, but still does well with the theme. I think these are both excellent games, and the consensus seems to be that the expansions really open them both up well.
Watch It Played Thanks! One more question: can you also use the blue ability of the cards that are already in your group and then discard them? Or when it says switch 2 cards for resources or coins, can you also use cards in your group for that? Or only the ones in your hand?
Glenn De Block Do you have a time stamp for the section of rules you’re asking about? I don’t entirely understand the question, but that may be because I shot this 3 years ago, so my memory on the details is a little fuzzy.

No, because when you Raid, you place a worker in one of the empty spaces of the area you are raiding, and then you take back a worker from the space you raided (so you wouldn't be able to take back another worker from a village space, because you'd then have 2 workers). Hope that makes sense!

Yes.
We don't understand the recruiters play value. Can you please clarify if I get to add the recuiter and ANOTHER crew member or if it just means I add the recruiter to my crew? Thanks!
Hey Kimberly, any card you use for its play effect is discarded, so you'd lose the recruiter during that effect. Hope that helps!

After placing a worker on a building can I remove a worker from a raid location? Had our first game where we had no more gray workers since they were all on raid locations.
You can't remove them from raid locations. Depending on the order you perform raids, it changes what workers will be available during the game.
So each player is playing with the resources at the bottom and raiding the areas at the top? So then each player is kind of playing off what the other players have done?
In many ways, yes.
@@WatchItPlayed I see, thank you!
So after you have placed your worker, you can take any worker from te board? (It doesn't have to be yours?)
Correct. Once placed on the board, the workers aren't really owned by any player anymore.
@@WatchItPlayed Thanks for your answer! 🙂
So you can pick up another player's gray or white token if they placed it in the town on their turn?
Yes
Once a worker is placed, it is no longer owned by anyone. So anyone can pick it up to activate that action (or just to claim the worker).
Is the limit of 8 cards, resources and silver a combined limit or is 8 per type of resource?
8 per type.
Really great game!!!!

I think it's great to have two Viking games that both offer a different take on things. Nice to have some real variety out there in "gameland". Rodney, how do I know when to roll 1 dice versus 2 when raiding?
Hey Kelly, you'll find that explained here: ua-cam.com/video/MmpI3UZ0CfE/v-deo.html
Seems to be the number of red shields with "?". If two ? shields, roll two dice.
Is it okay if during set up you have only Valkyrie tokens at a raiding location?
Yep - that can happen!
Watch It Played so then the only reason you would plunder that place is for points and the worker? Thanks for responding!
Does the "taking away a meeple" action also count for raiding a location?
No, you cannot take away a meeple from a location, in order to raid it.

You can work or raid on a turn. But can you do one of each? Like, place One to raid, and then pick up one that works?
