Old video but thought I would comment. I need to demagnetise industrial equipment quite regularly. This is achieved using a reducing AC Field which is what these Demag pens are using. The magnetising force is constant from the pen and demagnetisation is achieved by removing the magnetising force slowly away from the item being demagnetised. The best way to use these is to switch the demag unit off, place it close to the area being demagnetised. Turn it on then remove the pen slowly to a distance of about 500mm then switch it off. Repeat as needed. Moving it towards the heads already turned on is actually magnetising the head. You can check whether it needs to be demagnetised in the first place by using a gauss meter. Keep the demag pen AWAY FROM THE CAPSTAN MOTORS as they have permeant magnets inside them that can be damaged by demagnetisation.
I think I can already add some information. As I announced yestarday I did test with 8kHz, 10kHz and 12,5kHz. Tape recorder R2R Tesla B115 - 3 heads produced around 1984 - used by me for about 7 years, never demagnetised by me. Tape sony 35um. After demagnetisation on all above frequencies strength of reproduction indicated by analog meters increased 1 dB . Surely if residual magnetisation by any reason would be more effect could be bigger but I do not have more magnetised sample.
I would call the results a real success Michael. I seem to remember owning a demagnetising cassette back in the day.. It had a green head inside it, a battery ,an orange LED with a button on the outside...
Im just listening to this on my smartphone and the difference is obvious! More volume and greater clarity. I need to do this to all my tape heads now. Thanks for the video!
I am surprised but the difference I found enough to convince me to give it a try. Already reached for my demagnetizing cassette which was unused since over 20 years , replaced battery and will convince myself that my recorders no have such issue. Possibly often issue with slight not exact sounding sopranos in two channels may be also caused by their not equal magnetizing I think to make a test with using 12 kHz sinus for recording before, check volume of reproduction with indicators then demagnetizing and next do recording with the same 12 kHz volume and compare volume on indicators to previous. But will it work now I am not sure.
I just demagnetized my deck and notice a big improvement when recording, particularly with Dolby NR active, which sounded really dull before but much better now.
Searched for head demagnetiser on youtube but they didn't help as they were all theoretical. Then search by date added and found yours which gave before and after and i could hear they were both slightly better. Was looking as I bought a mini Panasonic boombox at a bootsale and when cassettes are played in either cassette deck the volume is a tenth of what it should be so wondering if it was this problem. Seeing that it is on both decks beginning to think maybe not. Helpful video.
Thanks for the comment, I take it that you have given both heads a good clean, as this is more likely to degrade the sound to a very low volume rather than magnetized heads I would have thought.
@@MichaelYates I did quickly but with no sound difference. I think it may be more in the circuitry as both decks do it. If I ever get the time to investigate more I'll update.
@@mrfoameruk Also a slight possibility is the azimuth, where the head/heads have moved out of alinement over time, but being both heads are both low in playback may make this less the case here.
back in the late 70's i got my first reel to reel a Teac aw4416, and bought a teac de magnetizer and i did your technique as at the time there was no youtube to show how it's done, still not sure if it's the correct techneque.
It was definitely more noticeable on the open reel deck, the highs were instantly improved. But I didn't notice much difference on the Cassette deck. But maybe the Cassette didn't really need doing anyway. However, I don't know what tape you are using to record on to, or the source material. But the music itself sounded pretty duff, as if the original recording was poorly done. I have heard much better, even WITH UA-cam compression limitations. Out of curiosity, what was the source, and was the source another tape, CD, vinyl?
Hi, the source was from CD, the tape used was a standard normal bias tdk cassette, but the cassette deck was not 100 percent still needed some alignment, there was a slight difference my end, just about noticeable, the results of demag was much more noticable with the reel 2 reel
@@MichaelYates I guess what I meant when I said the source sounded a bit duff, was that even on the reel2reel, results of the demag aside, the source recording sounded thick and compressed, maybe even squashed, which led me to think initially, that you used another tape as a source medium. But to now know that it was from CD, tells me that the actual production on the master recording wasn't done very well. Well not to my ears at least. The demag did improve things on the reel2reel with the top end however, but didn't seem to do anything to open the soundstage, or improve dynamics for me.
@@hermanmunster3358 Yes the source was taking from UA-cam Library then recorded to CD , so the tracked would have been quite compressed and would not have been nice and open and dynamic. Think results would have been more noticable with a very good recorded source. But did show especially on the reel 2 reel that a de-mag did make a difference and well worth doing.
There is no need to come in and out for each part of the machine...just stay in the area and move the demagnetizer in circles for a couple of seconds...then move it away slowly and still move it in circles for a couple of inches....that's it.
Yeah the heads need adjusting just adjust the screw with the paint on it to hear clear top end possibly the heads might need grinding and polishing if there's a tape grooves in the head a lip feel it with your nail. Works on your cartridge tonearm as well only moving magnet... with retractable stylist... do not do the stylus...!!! just the body of the cartridge.
hi i am making a video on about the VU METER the and the amp that drive's i am finding alot are playing a round to turn up the play back turn up the play back pot keep hands of the vu pots some tape deck have a play back and a out put level on the audio there's there a list i send in a audio 1.41v and set it to 0 on the meter on a tascam 38 it's better to use the same VU meter in dock 1 because all the meters are out a small bit like 1/2 a DB in a tascam 38 i have a set up audio card it has a 1 on it this was tune up by a new not used card i have a fostex b16 hell is the word i had to check it studio decks don't go bad because studio look after there gear better i find i have a tool the same as you not used alot i just like to say some things to help bob
Your "slowly away" is not enough slowly actually, sir. The last foot must be passed really(!) slowly. Like 10-30 secs for it. This is how a demagnetization works
hi to all out there please you try and make video's it not as easy as you think you need a big lock up to put all the gear you have this why it's better to make small ones 15- 20 max to get them hooked and with the same coming back all the time is a good thing bob's bit's
hi am see some that have only small number of video's on there channel and is the same as you have some don't have alot to say i have find i been looking in to things youtube is more a old man channel just like to say
hi MIKE how is you i have alot on show bro youtube he lost his left side sound is down i did tell him having alot of fun with A/V gear not had alot of luck with cam's they have been playing up and not working right a mix of A/V kind of files this is the thing when you try to save costs note beware if you are over 67 and don't need to work and are on uc and workings as well BEWARE they down the uc office don't like you on here 100% they will not say anything just don't say you hobbie is youtube it's a big NO to any body they may have some that you cause call people with needs working for them they have to safe look after there workers you see youtube is for people that work for them selfs you may find in the uk there's not alot of over 60 plus making video's in the uk
Im ok thanks Bob hope things are good your end. I was thinking that you might have had put a little video together on your channel as I know there are a lot of people out there with reel2reel gear and looking for help and advice. I know its not that straight forward recording and editing

Thanks Kevin for more insight into how to use these demagnetisers which will be a help to everyone that comes here

I defineately heard an improvement on the reel to reel. More detail, and a treble boost. Thank you for this video.

Nice video, thanks. The results are subtle but noticeable. That is an awesome song, by the way!
Many thanks

Great explanation and a clear improvement. Thanks!

it does in fact demagnetize stuff.. I magnetized a nail with a magnet and then demagnetized the nail again. and i have the same demagnetizer.
Excellent idea for testing the unit out. Thanks for the comment.

That's Excellent
Wow, I can hear the difference through my laptop speakers!! I've bought one of theses to demagnetize my Teac V7000!
Yes very well worth doing for the small outlay
After is noticeably more clear on the reel.
Yes, I could hear the difference even without wearing headphones
Big thanks for this sir, did you by chance do the narration on Ogden's Nut Gone Flake?
Thanks and no it wasn't me
Thanks for this demo. Just restored a Sony tc 377 going to de mag it and check out the recording difference..
What a difference it has made and my technics tape deck..

I will have a good look at the heads again John and will have a little tinker with the azimuth again if they look ok
hi i am making a video on about the VU METER the and the amp that drive's
i am finding alot are playing a round
to turn up the play back turn up the play back pot keep hands of the vu pots
some tape deck have a play back and a out put level on the audio
there's there a list i send in a audio 1.41v and set it to 0 on the meter
on a tascam 38 it's better to use the same VU meter in dock 1
because all the meters are out a small bit like 1/2 a DB
in a tascam 38 i have a set up audio card it has a 1 on it this was tune up by
a new not used card
i have a fostex b16 hell is the word i had to check it
studio decks don't go bad because studio look after there gear better i find
i have a tool the same as you not used alot i just like to say some things to help bob
Thanks, keep us informed when you upload the video Bob, be good to see some infomation on your channel
Your "slowly away" is not enough slowly actually, sir. The last foot must be passed really(!) slowly. Like 10-30 secs for it. This is how a demagnetization works
Thank You for the extra infomation
Certainly a little brighter after demag
Def can hear more attack and twang from the guitar
hi to all out there please you try and make video's it not as easy as you think you need a big lock up to put all the gear you have
this why it's better to make small ones 15- 20 max to get them hooked and with the same coming back all the time is a good thing bob's bit's
You are right Bob it does take time just to do a little video can take a few days with taking pictues, research editing etc
Don't hold it near your VU meters!!
That's exactly what I was thinking. It can damage the VU meter magnets.
hi am see some that have only small number of video's on there channel
and is the same as you have some don't have alot to say i have find i been looking in to things youtube is more a old man channel
just like to say
Bob how are things your end ? how are things going with making a video on your channel ?
hi MIKE how is you
i have alot on show bro youtube he lost his left side sound is down i did tell him
having alot of fun with A/V gear not had alot of luck with cam's they have been playing up and not working right
a mix of A/V kind of files this is the thing when you try to save costs
note beware if you are over 67 and don't need to work
and are on uc and workings as well BEWARE they down the uc office don't like you on here
100% they will not say anything just don't say you hobbie is youtube it's a big NO to any body
they may have some that you cause call people with needs working for them
they have to safe look after there workers you see youtube is for people that work for them selfs you may find
in the uk there's not alot of over 60 plus making video's in the uk
Im ok thanks Bob hope things are good your end. I was thinking that you might have had put a little video together on your channel as I know there are a lot of people out there with reel2reel gear and looking for help and advice.
