Clone Hero is a freeware music rhythm video game created by Ryan Foster. It is a clone of the Guitar Hero franchise with nearly identical gameplay. The main draw of the game is its ability to play community-made songs, which has resulted in a large fan community around the game as well as a resurgence in popularity for the genre. Clone hero acts similar to and emulator and you’ll have to source your own songs. This guide assumes you have atleast downloaded Clone Hero from clonehero.net/

Originally I was wanting to play Clone Hero for the first time because of how simple it is to combine all the songs from past games. I originally picked up a Nintendo Wii Les Paul, had a few fun days playing one of the Guitar Hero games, but got quickly annoyed with load times, song selections, and having to switch disks out for another track list. It is also impossible to play DLC songs with the services being shut down in various forms.

Out of the years I have been playing Clone Hero, I think the wiitars are the best option for the price. If you are able to grab one for under $20, you could buy one of the solderless Arduino kits and still be under the price of a typical explorer and have led mechanical frets
please only do this on broken wiitars though. they're some of the best out of box guitars for poll rate and latency and seeing them get gutted when they still work fine is such a damn shame

There's also the option to mod a PS3/X360 guitar with a solderless mod kit from RetroCultMods.
Best option out there if you have a PS3 guitar but not the dongle as it turns it into a wired guitar and since its Pi Pico powered, can be reprogrammed to be usable on PS3, PS4 and PS5
yeah you can mod any original gh controller with the kit afaik, i am getting a kit for the kramer myself
Both Retrocult no solder and PhunkyCustoms drop in kit have new software. You no longer need to reprogram when switching from PC to console. FYI PhunkyCusttom drop in is the more complete option. I'm not saying better or worse, just more complete.
@@ariac4080the ps3 guitars are good candidates tho because the capacitor is often corroded anyways and the kit turns it into a wired ps3,4,5 guitar. Same thing with the Kramer

I will always recommend GH5/Band Hero as intro guitars. I have been rockin one as a daily driver for 7 years and it is still in fantastic condition. I’ve learned everything from rake strumming to tapping on it and I’ve never had to replace anything. It is not the best by any means, but it is durable as hell.

the overpriced dongle part is so relatable, got into clone hero ~1 year ago and instantly found 2 rockband 1 strats at goodwills for $1 and $7. thought i got away with a steal till i realized i would need dongles and went crazy looking at the total cost for what were considered subpar guitars :( ... great video tho!

@@peaknostalgia Dude literally a few hours ago I just found and got a (I think it's named sunburn or something) Wii guitar for 8 dollars, I think the thrift store learned it's lesson because they had a gh5 guitar for like a year and it was 80 dollars, of course no one bought it.
I highly recommend checking goodwills and thrift stores for guitars, i just bought an X-plorer last week for 5 dollars at goodwill and for the past few years i've gotten all my guitars from goodwill and thrift stores, never spent over 10 dollars on any of them.

Im using the World Tour guitar for 360 and honestly its one of my more favorite ones for feel. Only problem is the strumbar sometimes gotta take a break so they stop feeling mushy but just ordered a rgb kit from retrocult so that should take all the problems away.
If you're tech savvy enough you can also buy a broken guitar and bring some new life into with a Retrocult modkit. Comes with both mechanical frets and mechanical switches for the strum bar, it's more on the pricier side but if you're looking to get something I guess "fancier" you can always go that route.
your video was great, thank you for taking your time to make it. however, i'm not sure on if a 360 guitar connected to pc will have tilt. as you said, its the iconic way to start star power.
Tilt worked right away on 2 pcs and 2 different X-plorers

I would really reccomend playing YARG, it's a newer game similar to Clone Hero, with active support, and more features, including venues, and even characters in the future
I don't like it as well so far. The fret board is too short no matter what camera angle I set and I really don't like the RB style. Also Clone Hero is about to release a new update. I haven't played YARG in a couple of weeks. Last time I did there wasn't venues unless you had a mod.
I've tried YARG, my only issue is that it doesn't have like a Gamepad Mode and trying to strum with a gamepad while using the triggers as frets ain't my thing.

I still had my Guitar Hero: Metallica Game, dongle and guitar for PS2 laying around and found out about Clone Hero, after some messing around with a cheap adapter and a usb2 extension cable it all works fine, the latency is no different from the original game. I had the whammy bar working at one point but the tilt sensor messed the other inputs up, I set it all up again and can't for the life of me get it to register the whammy now.
I have an old ps2 sg sitting around but it doesn’t work however since the plastic pieces and rubber are fine I think if I put a new motherboard, switches n stuff I could revive it.

3:08 I use a guitar controller I bought off Walmart app or Amazon app. I think Walmart app. It's a ps3/PC guitar with a Bluetooth dongle. Instantly worked. Yes, had to map buttons, but that was literally it. I only wish it popped up as controller instead of keyboard

The only good ones you can use are from any rockband4. But they don’t give you full controller support
Docking station / hub + 10ft cable gives plenty of freedom in my experience, and is less of a headache than dealing with bluetooth and batteries.

I like the PS3 World Tour and the Guitar Hero 5 controllers best. The PS3 Les Paul is my next best. There is some latency but unless your a hard core player looking to compete its fine. No worse than paying the original games. I have one or 2 of almost every guitar controller. Some modded and some not.
Ive played guitar hero lefty ever since i was a kid, but i never play on lefty flip, its much harder for me to play lefty flip, but i play guitar right handed

I lucked out and found a barley used xbox 360 xplorer at my cousins basement. He been moved out and i asked him how much for the guitar and he told me just take it dude. Been working great with clone hero and it's plug and play., No adapter needed.

The thing is, Rock band strum sucks ass so getting a GH guitar is likely a better option. so uh, I modded a rock band guitar, I thought it was bad because there was no feedback without it being plugged in, It might be biased since i modded it but I really like my rock band guitar, all inputs are stock, just connected to an Uno R3 which I got for free, id suggest the pi pico for anyone looking into modding a guitar

@@casedistortedyou would wanna get a wired rb strat with the strum fix modif youre going for rb specific guitars otherwise go for a wii less Paul with a raphnet (or similar) or a xbox 360 xplorer just make sure its wired

I can’t get into Clone Hero man, I mean it’s cool that you can have custom songs and all that and it looks just like guitar hero but it’s not the guitar hero I know and love. I love hearing the whammy fx and I love hearing the crowd reactions. Clone Heroes not for me man. As for custom songs I have GH3 for PC and I have custom songs on that so I’m totally fine with sticking to the OG stuff

So the x-plorer controller is the best controller and you gave it the least amount of time. I'm on here searching for best options to set up clone hero for my daughter. I need more than just saying its the best. We don't want cord connections because her and her friends are all going to be standing across the room playing. Is the x-plorer corded or Bluetooth? I don't even know what else to ask. But it was frustrating when you said this is the best option and then you barely said anything about it.

modding the ps3 and adding custom songs to rb3 is super ez aswell.
Personally nothing beats the smoothness and silence of the RB4 guitars. They're hell to configure properly and they cost an arm though.
I bought two and the first one only worked for an hour and the other one had a broken strum bar. Safe to say I'm never spending my money on this shit again
What I'm missing from clone hero is the visuals of the band playing, like in the guitar hero titles. I get that there might be some copy right related issues regarding that.

Future YARG > Rock Band 3 Deluxe (playable on console too!) > GHWTDE > Clone Hero > YARG > Fortnite Festival IMO
What is YARG currently missing that you think makes it that much worse? Personally my biggest issue with YARG is that it's made in Unity and doesn't run that well, which wouldn't be an easy thing to fix at this point. Feature-wise it looked pretty good to me, though.

@@portraitsoftracy People seem to make this mistake a lot where when you mention performance they blame your computer. The thing is, it's actually plenty playable for me on e.g. the Steam Deck. It's just that Unity games in general do not run very well (Rust is a big example but you could probably just search "unity performance" and find lots of people talking about it). It's a bit like the game engine equivalent to people making programs in Electron, which is pretty much a whole web browser and likes to hog resources and run terribly. A game as simple as this should run quite well on integrated graphics in old computers even, but it chugged on some things I tested it on, like an early 2010s all-in-one PC. Disabling bloom and enabling low quality mode in settings helps a lot. There's no problem of mine to be solved here in that I can run it fine enough, it would just ideally be made in something besides Unity. Also, I never played Clone Hero and probably won't ever bother with it since we have YARG.
