I feel like this is how it was meant to be read. Not falsely dramatic or theatrical. Just honest. Thank you.

Afraid of the future. Afraid of tomorrow. I have not studied enough. Neglected education. I walked in the wrong ways and drank the cup of illusion. I buried all my dreams in the backyard of my heart. Wandered in the paths of surrealist poetry and self-righteous road of philosophy. But gaps and question marks in my inner man were never answered. I worked hard but my pocket was a bag with holes. Sank into the quicksand of ephemeral passions. Discovered that religions are an empty shell without the divine essence. So far I wrote my story with my own hands. But in one night in my room had an ecstasy, a vision of God. Received the commission to preach the Gospel of Jesus Christ. his beloved son! He says in His word that He chooses whom He pleases! Since then I put my life in God's hands!

I think Uncle Walt wanted this poem to be read with an Upbeat stanza at the end. To end it positively with a question is genius. We will think what we will do !!

+jim smith I agree. I know we're used to the popular upbeat read of the whole , but every time I read it, it feels to me like someone is contemplating, them self alone : what is the purpose of my life? or.. why should I continue to live? -- out of nowhere (God, enlightenment, the unified field...) an answer comes in an unfamiliar voice : That you are here! That life exists and identity... It's like a selfish meditation on misery that ends with a revelation of the gift of being!

A person should read up on Walt Whitman and his life. It speaks well to how his poetry works and is written. Well done!

To me the way the reader sounds so sad and depressing as if it were read by a love struck child who is isolated in his loneliness from the world around him. I believe it should sound more aggressive and demanding, for it is a question of the very meaning of life.

Хорошего официального русского перевода найти не могу. А ведь такое известное стихотворение... Из неофициальных есть такой вариант - deilf.dreamwidth.org/476370.html
