  • Across the many glacial valleys in the Himalayas, there are many villages that dot the rugged surrounding landscape, some with a rich history that long predates American history as a whole. In order to service many of these remote Himalayan villages in India.

    I was in Leh about 10 years ago and met a guy who worked on motorcycles. There are tons of them in Leh because people like to ride their motorcycles up the Leh Manali Higway, but going back down is too daunting and they prefer to just sell the motorcycle and fly back. After an afternoon of chatting and sharing tea, my new friend asks if I want to help him deliver a Royal Enfield Thunderbird 500cc to Manali the next morning, I say sure, and the next morning I'm on the back of his motorcycle for 2 days of the most insane traveling I've ever done. That road is incredible in its epic beauty, but at every turn there is slick mud and a sharp drop off, or a waterfall overtaking the road, or a bridge with holes in it that force you to ride on the narrow steel beams supporting it. I saw 3 trucks slipping and sliding off the edges of the road up to Rohtang Pass.
    One interesting thing about the mud at Rohtang Pass, there's either pyrite or something else glittery in it because when that mud dries on your clothes, it becomes extremely sparkly.

      Very well could have been a micaceous sand considering all of the schist in the Himalayas. Mica has been used for mirrors.
      I was doing a lake shore survey in western NC and the beaches were nearly solid mica and it was glittery as all hell.

    Back in the 1990's I had a deep-seated obsession with the Himalayas. One year I set out to travel all the highest motorable roads in Nepal, India, Pakistan and Tibet. On this list was the Manali to Leh Highway. The journey will take two days and crosses five passes with the highest being well over 17,000 feet. I will never forget the pure grander of those mountains. I also remember looking out the window with the tyres of the bus being just feet from the precipice. I quickly became fatalistic.
    If this is on your bucket list, then consider travelling by bus from Manali to Leh and then to Srinagar and onto Jammu. I would consider this to be the greatest bus journey in the world. Also give yourself plenty of time to stop off and enjoy the sites of Leh and Srinagar. Depending on the winter snow the road will open sometime in May.
    R.I.P to all those people who have lost their lives on these roads.

    If God had meant Man to roll, he would have given us wheels instead of feet. It's interesting that the Inca population built paths extending far up into the Andes for thousands of miles of still present stone pathways that they used for commerce. Himalayan mountain goats are left wondering, "Who built these 12-lane freeways here?"

    It's odd how there's almost always one, or a few, drivers who think that they still can drive, even when the conditions is so bad all other drivers stay home. So tragic that everyone in the SUV died.

    Look, I'm not trying to be insensitive, but the fact no one else was on the road and that the area was well known to be dangerous even in daylight and clear weather precludes "bad luck." This was simply a stupid idea.

    I can’t imagine what had these people so intent upon making this dangerous trip during a downpour? That vehicle was severely overloaded, the weather was terrible, the road was being washed out, etc. What were they thinking? Too poor to stay in the town for a night? If so, that’s truly sad.

    The road to fairy meadows (next to Nanga Parbat) in Pakistan may be the most dangerous, I've been on it and it's much narrower and tricky and prone to rock fall than this

  • @POLARTTYRTM
    @POLARTTYRTM 9 місяців тому +4

    There are far too many roads dubbed the most dangerous. It is a topic that can't really be agreed upon, the yungas road in South America saw almost 90 people perish in a single day in a tragic bus accident and it just happens all the time. If your vehicle falls, your chances of surviving are just ZERO because you are falling off completely vertical cliffs. The cliffs at the side of the are so vertical that way back in the day, prisoners and criminals were thrown off them. It's one SCARY road because of how pretty much vertical it all is. There are so many roads like that.
    Now, roads dangerous because of humans are even more debatable, too many candidates everywhere, South America, Africa, the Middle East, Central America... I for example live right in front of what we call the road of death here because criminal activities are not just so high, they are also highly deadly, they make Chicago/Detroit "tough" hoods look like Switzerland tame and safe.

    • @bubbletractor

    • @POLARTTYRTM
      @POLARTTYRTM 9 місяців тому +1

      @@bubbletractor I saw the video notification on the phone and immediately thought it was a video about the yungas road. Seriously, some places are so narrow that it is difficult and heart-stopping to go through even in a normal-sized car, I can't imagine the pressure that bus drivers feel when driving on that thing with a largue vehicle full of people under his responsibility. That road is so dangerous it just should not exist at all, I don't think any of these Himalayan roads have seen as many fatalities as the yungas road, seriously.
