It's a blink-and-you-miss-it thing but the horrific images behind Kabru as he contemplates eating a monster-egg omelet are a speed-run of his tragic backstory.

@@spcraftsman2656you'll be glad for sure later in the story, it depends on how much they will cover but there's some crazy hinting in that small sequence
Laios's neuro-divergent coding is seriously top-notch: his inability to understand social cues and read people genuinely impacts his personal relationships and the plot, but his unique outlook and hyperfixations are assets. It's a shockingly faithful representation of neurodivergence that doesn't infantilize or glamourize in any way, and I'm seriously in love with it.
Is this confirmed? I feel like people unfairly label him a bad char or that the story is badly written cause he doesnt follow the usual cool main character or super loud and energetic exciting main. Really nice to have a subtle depiction regardless, of a character that just has his quirks.
@@nichescenes Yeah I don't know if the author has commented on it, but I think even if the creators didn't intend for that interpretation, he still ended up having all those traits (I'm personally assuming he must have been based on a neurodivergent person(s) in real life). And I think the result is an incredibly likeable and interesting character!
@@nichescenesit's not explicit but there's a lot of subtext in Ryoko Kui's writing, some obvious and some more subtle. To me Laios's autism is similar to Toshiro being Japanese, she never wrote "look Toshiro is from a japanese clan" but it's obvious that he because of his culture, clothing ect.
Laios experiences struggles that are very similar to those of autistic people (people hating you in secret, having to repress resentment because it's ok to mock you..) and different autistic traits like a special interest. It's not just that he knows a lot about monsters, he really approaches it in a manner where he collects every single piece of information that he can, that's what makes him happy.
There's also other subtle traits like blunted affect, Kui also explained that he's picky with clothing because some jackets are too tight ect.
In that way I don't think it's a stretch to say he's autistic because he shows many relatable traits specific to autistic experiences.

@@hyobro8392 Interesting. I wonder if this was difficult to write. I know lately people are super picky about their anime. They find one character annoying and call the entire series mid. Not saying he is annoying, but someone might or I could see them not getting what you stated and coming up with the series being "badly written" my most hated buzz word, then drop it. Early on I just thought the tone of the show was unique in that they paced it different. Point is I didn't see the stuff you mentioned clearly till recent eps and I actually think the character work is well done in that case. It's obvious on a rewatch that something is there. Anyway I just hope people don't call it bad writing, boy do I hate that we boil "good characters" today down to happy go lucky, extrovert or depressed dark deep type etc. Like having a character I don't instantly connect to or "get" in one ep isn't bad lol. IDK I guess I just think the pace of shows to keep attention has led to such characters you described being seen as risky when they can be used in unique ways. So thanks for the read.

tbf, as long as one of the casters remained alive, they can just bring the killed people back to life so death really isn't THAT big a deal.
@@zabilac But the order of bringing people back also mattered, as Kabru only took a GUESS that Maizuro was powerful enough to resurrect people too. If they resurrected like 4 people and it wasn't any of the healers, they'd have run out of mana first, and then coming back to res them later could've come with a stronger risk due to things like the blood drying up or soaking into the ground, and their souls becoming more fragile.

Falin cracking heads open, killing everyone and Marcille like "nooo stop attacking her, shes just confused 😢" dhhdhdhdhfdh tho I think it's unfair do say the whole party was being irrational. Chilchuck took mickbell and hid away since they're not a good fighters, Laios was going to attack Falin before she called out to him and even so he did hurt her to save kabru, even apologized for hesitating.... And senshi had the food to worry about ok? leave the man alone, it was food made with love he couldn't let it go to waste!

You are so on point!!! Chilchuck protects his fellow halflings, Laios is rather reasonable despite his autistic traits confusing people, Senshi’s care and love for food, and Marcille’s gray morality when her loved ones are at stake… This episode really shows their true colors in a dangerous situation

The thing is none of the spoilers actually gave me a clue of where the story is going they just make go like "wtf, how do they even get into this situation?!" From the moment he caught the tray with Shuro's meal at the end of last episode, throughout all this chaos and bloodshed he never let go of it until he could serve the food to Shuro. That's dedication to preserving good food (and a meal cooked with care)!
It was actually Falin calling to Laios there. Check her eyes, they returned to normal, they didn't have the dragon's reptile slits in them. She's still in there, but pushed way in the back of the thing's mind.

It's ancient magic because it was magic that was used a long time ago.
It's forbidden magic because the elves absolutely forbid ANYONE from using it, and they enforce that policy strictly.
It's dark magic because the elves refuse to explain why it's forbidden, and rumors spread as to why the elves refuse to let anyone know about it.
But, also, it is legit very bad stuff too. Not bad in the sense of "it is corruptive", more "it is simply unwise and easy to be used for bad".
And Marcille explained why its forbidden. It taps into a different dimension where energy is infinite. So it can be used to do otherwise impossible things - including very bad things. Marcille focuses on studying it to use it for good, but most people cant be trusted to do that, so its banned outright.
Now looking back you gotta give some credit to Marcille for eating all the monsters despite coming from the elven culture

Yeah, the characters in the show get weirded out by Laios because he is "dense" but in reality he is just an autistic character thas hiperfixiated in monsters and the whole point of "what would he do if he gets the power" is understandable since Kabru already said that the Touden brothers are indiferent to any other person, they just do what they like to do and that's it, there is no tell on what would they do.
The characters are all crazy in their own way but still they are not bad by nature and it makes it believable (irl people are just crazy too), and as someone in the spectrum Laios is one of the most interestings MC i have ever seen.

It's so hard to comment on people's analysis when I've already finished the manga, I won't spoil anything but wow... there's so much I'd like to say. Just rest assured that it only grows better from here, and crazier, funnier, creepier. Ryoko Kui is an amazing author, I hope she writes new stories 'cause Dungeon Meshi became my top 2 manga of all time after I finished reading and digesting (lol) it. Anyway, I can see how much you're enjoying this show and it makes me so happy to see it treated with such care and attention!

Laios attacked her to try and save Kabaru and apologized for hesitating. Chilchuck hides along wiht Mickbelle, and Senshi says nothing. You are attributing Marcille's words to the whole party.
Tbf they are a team. And Laios also consented Marcille to perform the ritual on his sister. Sure Marcille is the one who treaded into the darkest moral realm, but as a team, they are definitely not goodie two shoes by the standards of this world.

I’m an anime-only, but I also understood the dark vs ancient vs modern magic the same way you described it. There’s a lot of ancient magic that carried on to the present day of the show, but there’s probably also some spells that got lost along the way and is probably referred to as just “ancient magic.” However, the forbidden ancient spells, whether inherent evil or not, would’ve come to be referred to as “dark magic” or “black magic.” Of course, Marcille would just call it “forbidden ancient magic” because she doesn’t believe in its bad connotations.
This episode was crazy, wasn't expecting so many people to just get massacred😂
It's become obvious that the Touden Siblings are both autistic. But, whereas the trait is tolerated or even seen as charming, free-spirited, or waifish in Falin partly by virtue of her being a beautiful woman, Laios is just seen as weird, awkward, and creepy for his neurodivergency. With the world making constant demands of him to conform or change to meet societal expectations.
Falin understands this somewhat and makes effort to be kind to her brother--as she's practically his only friend before going to the island. They're the only ones who understand each other. Seeing as they have the same weird interests and thought patterns.
However, for good or ill, Falin being there has also partly enabled Laios, as having just one person understand you and be your friend was enough for him to never need to change for the world. He has never seen his love and fascination for all things monster as anything but a good thing, as it's one of the things he shares and bonds over with his sister growing up. Instead, his frustration over his constant "otherness" or "othering" is directed outwards instead of inwards. He thinks the world around him should change. Not him. He knows the world wasn't built for him, but why should he change who he is for a world that never bothered to even budge for his sake?
This! The double standard is shown in Shuro. The Touden siblings are so very similar and the same things that he sees as “fascinating” and “unique” in Falin annoy and creep him out in Laios.

It’s not so much that it “isn’t” serious to Laios, more that his social awareness is shot, so his presentation of situations is as well.
Also, how much monsters = dark magic is… debatable? There’s definitely not a peer-reviewed study of their nature, due to the sheer taboo nature of not equating monsters to animals.
24:15 Also, the party didn’t have a significantly better chance of killing her than the retainers. Falin is a chimera, which is already a nonstandard monster, but as a mix between a dragon, chicken(?) and a _mage_ , she’s a more difficult fight than the dragon, _and_ she had the drop on them. Marcille was distracted between figuring out how this possibly happened, and Laios was bamboozled by her recognizing him. With Senshi still holding the meal and Chilchuk being dead serious on not having hands, that’s _all_ their firepower neutralized by shock. Mind, Toshiro _also_ wanted to insist that Falin not be hurt, that’s what got Tade (oni girl) tail swiped through a wall. By comparison, Kabru is _blatantly nuts_ trying to sneak her on his own.
26:10 The only monsters they’ve encountered thus far that ‘would’ eat a human, are the plants on floor 1 or 2, and the dragon itself. Everything else is territorial. Kelpies in real life mythos kill people, but it’s unstated whether or not they eat them.
Senshi’s been solo for dozens of years. That he’s remotely more normal socially than Laios is kinda wild (but he wears it well).
On chimera: common tropes is rhey fusion of lion, eagle and snake.
Head of a lion with irs hind legs have claws. Body of an eagle with feathers, wings and front legs is talons. The tail is a snake that can give sight and attack with apply venom.
Here it’s dragon, eagle I assume and human being falin.

Laois is pretty much autistic coded and they cement that here wifh the argument and fight between him and toshiro.
Here maybe a debate: on Twitter ppl were glad for this representation to even (duck behind desk) say irs better then how they presented mob in mob psycho.
Later when maizuru mention she might have raised him wrong note that he isn’t her son but still raise him like one. His parents married out of political gain reasons so one of those she gives lord sons then her wife of family maintain their standing. Maizuru is the lords mistress but she always took care of toshiro like a son to her. In side chaps she does feel she is at fault of holding him back on speaking his mind especially against his father when the father make poor choices + if one day toshiro becomes a lord.
Also on kabru analyze of laios and back fo the autism that’s one advantage Laois have is he doesn’t hesitate. He speaks his mind, do said thing and resolve it then stay back and be cautious. Ppl are afraid of the magician since they don’t know what he can do, Laois is same boat on doesn’t know but jump in. It’s an advantage that can throw the magician off.
While it can be understood that Laios and Mob both qualify, Mob has the extra bit of straight-up being psychic and being among the strongest around from the beginning (with a meter for when he’ll reshape reality itself around him), while Laios is closer to the everyday experience (a keyed-in interest, a social expectation to just ‘get it’ at some point, trying to share that interest without forcing the issue or alienating), I think.
This was an amazing episode one that makes this show a high recommend from now on. I thought you guys religion analogy was interesting and the fact that the monster meat might be making them go crazy. The dungeon is made from mana so it makes sense that it would be bad to consume
As much as i understand the point of view from other party (i mean non laios teammates), i feel like they antagonize or act too hostile towards Laios n friends.
Of course, i think thats because they dont really see Falin as someone precious to them except Shuro, but if I was in Laios shoes, i wouldnt be able to just cut down my own little sister, my own blood family right on the spot lol.
Not to mention, they went through shit just to save her, then Shuro had the audacity to diss Laios like that? It's definitely understandable but damn i'd be lying if i said im not pissed off at him lol. He also left the party, only to come back and talk shit to him. The journey would have been somewhat easier if they had Shuro by their side from the get go.
Man, everyone is just dissing at Laios and Marcille who had to make difficult choices to save their precious one, but cant really blame them... which makes me pissed off even more lmao

Yes, they can shut her down at that moment to protect others, but if they're kill her again, can they actually revive her? because Marcille and Laios probable get prisoned and others perceive Falin as a "monster", Shuro probable cremate her body later.
In Marcille defense, she's sacrifice too much, rolling into the deep dungeon, almost dead and using forbiden magic just to achieve one only thing, *saving Falin*. Marcille at that moment has the biggest priority is Falin, she's *desparated*, she's not affort to see Falin get hurted or die anymore. And that! is the real point this show make, to show you people in desparate, they're confused and might not be a saint to think for everyone, and people around them may get hurt for their despairing decisions in dire situation.
But then we should be critical of Laios and Falin for the selfishness, no? I assume you had read the manga from the way you framed your reply, and so do I, but with such hindsight, we SHOULD be critical of Laios and Marcille, just as people are (rightfully) criticize Shuro, Kabru and others.

Everyone has their own motivation, "criticism" is just an act of showing disagreement between people and people, based on some standards which are made by people also...

@@catscanhavelittleasalami The whole reason that Falin even became a monster is because her soul merged with dragon's, magician merely aided in that regard.
Forbidden magic is forbidden for a reason, I've yet to see a fantasy setting where magic that is dubbed "evil" or "cursed" does not have adverse side effects.
@@mon0lithic629 Except the transformation wasn’t an inherent side effect, it only happened _because_ there was prior magic established upon the dragon’s soul (which shouldn’t have been a factor, as with the warg’s souls not sticking around to revive them).
Functionally, Marcille’s spell usage was sound. The nitpick was an effect that was already in play that she wouldn’t know to check/try to account for, which would be the case with _any_ action taken.
@@alecLogan My guy, they are in a dungeon controlled by the magician -- they know, for a fact, that big monsters are controlled (at least in part) by him. Reviving Falin with dragon flesh was a risky move that Marcille was very much aware of.
Of course it wasn't totally predicted, but again, it's a forbidden ritual involving resurrecting someone with CURSED FLESH OF A DRAGON.
It is absolutely her fault, and that's not to mention any potential unmentioned issues that could arise from the usage of dark magic.
@@mon0lithic629 They _don’t_ know that, else they would have accounted for it. While it’s brought up whether or not they would need to move the warg bones away to keep them from also reviving, it’s dismissed as there are no monster ghosts to deal with. The only reason Marcille did the math here is because it came up, and she _knows_ the spell she cast didn’t have the property necessary to cause the transformation on its own.
The ritual alone doesn’t account for the mixing of souls, or souls being bound to the flesh used to revive. The idea of specific monsters being bound to the mad mage’s will wasn’t brought up until the orcs mentioned that he shows up ‘sometimes.’ If it were so ubiquitous, people would constantly be encountering the mad mage, which is established to _not_ be the case.
Don’t shift blame away from the mad mage just because “forbidden is forbidden,” Falin wouldn’t have just ‘become’ the dragon eventually without another force acting upon her form.

Eh, to me, Shuro left the party when they needed him the most, came back with backup to ostensibly help but ended trying to play boyscout karen in the end. Utterly useless, and now he's heading back instead of helping with the dungeon master.
That isn't what he's doing. I don't remember if the anime has this conversation, but by this point Laios, Kabru, and Shuro should have hatched a sort-of-plan where Kabru and Shuro would report to the lord of the island and get him to send down as many adventurers as he could to make a mess of the upper levels of the dungeon, forcing the lunatic magician to send more monsters up while Laios &co go down to hunt him. Shuro had the additional plan of calling in the Elves of the West as backup to increase their chances of success, then rescue the Touden siblings later after things calmed down, so he needed to get back home and muster his family's troops. Of course, all three had the wrong idea about the lord of the island's backbone, the adventurers' competence, and the elves' intentions.

I don’t think all what Shuro has done was completely wrong or invalid tho.
He left the party and formed new party with his fathers retainers because they are stronger than his former party. That is truth but of course how their skills translate to surving in dungeon might be different. As we have seen how Senshi, Laios and Chilcuck expertise have helped them thus war.
He is not wrong to critise Laois from using black magic to save Falin again. The ancient magic must be forbiden for reason. So in Shuro’s mind telling the elves of the west is wiser move. Save Falin by sparing her from this form or perhaps they have other way to save her? We don’t know yet.
How was he useless? By not attacking Falin because Laois party didn’t do much either.
Shuros choise to go back is logical, imo. He doesn’t agree that saving Falin by killing lord of the dungeon and using forbiden magic again is the right way. Instead he informs the island lord that there is human chimera so other parties can be aware.

You seem too forget that marcille's magic is the one that caused the souls to be mixed in the beggining, the magician didnt do that. Sure, it was necessary, but that doesnt change that the side effects were bad. There is a reason black magic is prohibited, obviously marcille was not the first one to use it.
but in my opinion, marcille is still right when she said that there is no such thing as evil/black magic (honestly i forgot if she said that lol). Its not the tool, but the user. If other field of magic was used in a bad way with a big impact, do they gonna say that magic is forbidden as well?
I'd say, the people who say black magic is forbidden, is because they want to keep that enormous power to themselves, which is a valid reasoning i think, i cant imagine what will happen if black magic is commonly used all of a sudden lol. But if it was a common magic from the beginning, it might not be such a big threat, the people in dungeon meshi universe might already come up with a counter magic or something along that line, similar to what happen in frieren.
Of course this is just my theory, manga readers might be cringing at this comment lmao
@@grainnmertens Remember that the main issue with that magic is that the results are always unexpected. She said that it was not bad, then after that she ended up mixing fallin's soul with a dragon. The dark magician didn't do that. It was miss "dark magic is not bad".
