  • A first person point-of-view walk through of the USS Kearsarge (LHD 3) showcasing the life of 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit (MEU) Marines and sailors while on ship. The 26th MEU is a Marine Air-Ground Task Force forward-deployed to the U.S. 5th Fleet area of responsibility aboard the Kearsarge Amphibious Ready Group serving as a sea-based, expeditionary crisis response force capable of conducting amphibious operations across the full range of military operations. The video was shot with a GoPro Hero3 using a Chesty Mount. Due to operational security, the video was rearranged in a non-linear timeline. Video by Sgt. Chris Stone | 26th Marine Expeditionary Unit | Date: 07.28.2013

Never had washing machines and dryers for civilian clothes. We had to put our uniform laundry in bags in the compartment and the compartment cleaners would take to Supply to be washed. when completed, they would throw your laundry on your rack (as long as it was stenciled).

Greetings USS Kearsage! Do you think you would be able to handle a humanitarian relief effort in Texas due to Hurricane Harvey? I thought hovercraft deploying amphibious vehicles there could be of tremendous help, just an idea!?

The three months I spent onboard the USS kearsarge in 2010 were by far the most miserable of my enlistment. I would rather go back to living in mudhuts in afghanistan than go back on a Navy ship.

Its an amphibious assault ship. Has a smaller flight deck with no type of launch or recovery catapult. Good enough for helo's and Harrier jets that don't need a long runway. The stern part of the ship opens up and floods with water in an area called the well deck so Hovercrafts, Amphibious assault vehicles and other landing craft can come inside and pick up Marines for beach assaults.

I did my first tour in Iraq in 2003 when we initially invaded and my unit rode this ship to Kuwait and then back to the US when we went home. Then again in 2005 I was apart of the 26 MEU and I was yet again on board the USS Kearsarge. I gotta tell you as a Marine I really hated being on that ship. We had a Chief down in the well deck that loved to pull the drain plugs on our LAV's and then watch us clean up the oil/water/shit that dumped all over the deck. Also the Naval personnel treated us like absolute shit. We would have to do these giant working parties and I swear to God it would be just us Marines standing in the huge lines passing boxes of supplies while the squids just walked around all nasty. I remember my first moment in the Hangar Bay I saw a Chief demonstrate the nastiest looking salute I have ever seen and I knew from that day forward the Navy was a bunch of civilians in uniform. The man had his feet more than shoulder width apart and when he cut his salute he just held his hand out in front of his face. It was kinda bizarre for me to see having been fresh from boot camp I knew it was disgusting. Speaking of disgusting there was a girl on that ship that weighed every bit of 250 pounds and she got caught trying to fill her Camelbak with chocolate pudding in the mess deck, I swear. We also got rocket attacked while in the bay in Jordan and the Navy literally dropped their guns and gear and ran to get back on the ship. They left a bunch of Marines on the docks to fend for themselves for about a week. Those poor guys didn't even have a change of ass because they were just pulling watch and didn't plan to be on land for more than 8 hours. Luckily I was way up north in the mountains training, so I was not one of those unfortunate Marines that witnessed that. But when we came back to the ship, there were the guys we saw on watch when we left the ship a week prior only the had a lot of extra helmets, flak jackets and strangely most of them were carrying a couple of M14's which are Navy Issue. Like I said the Navy is a bunch of civilians in uniform pretending to be in the military.

Umm, our job was to defend the ship/get underway. Your job was to either ride the ship or be left on the beach. Your co-horts got left in Aqaba Jordan with the hadji amstel lights. But that is fine, you can complain about your ride where your only job while underway was working parties, gun cleanings, gym time/PT, shooting, and eating. Not to mention we weren't the only ship there, complaining about the Ashland too?

Cadillac Cooke I was with Charlie Company 2nd LAR. The Kearsarge was not a great time at all. We had to get haircuts down in this tiny barber shop that had 4 seats and we got one seat per unit which meant 4 different lines going down a tiny set of p-ways. Then the squids came along and told us we couldn’t line up where we were because we had completely clogged the p-way. Which just went over really well for those of us that had already spent hours in line. The ship store was hoarding all the tobacco products for the squids and telling the Marines they were sold out. The lazy POGs made us do all the work so we knew what was there. Idiots.
