  • The Sega Saturn was a commercial failure at launch, but has since built a following on it's eclectic collection of games. Rumor has it that the Saturn's RGB output doesn't hold up. Let's test that theory!

In this review of the HD Retrovision Component Adapter for the Sega Saturn, we'll compare the YPbPr signal carried by their little device to the stock RCA composite output many 90s kids will be familiar with. In addition, we will look at some ways that the HDR product can be used outside of the realm of modern LCD/LED displays.
So let's spin up those great games from the Sega Saturn and take a deep dive into how good these classic retro titles can look on a modern display!

I’ve had these cables & adapter for a while and they are indeed outstanding. I actually need order more HD Retrovision Genesis cables so that I’m not constantly switching the one cable I have between PSX, SS & NGCD.

I personally haven't noticed the Saturn's RGB output being soft compared to others. I'll have to take another look at it and compare to, say, the Genesis, the next time I have it hooked up.

I upgraded from S Video to HD Retrovision on my Saturn and I could barely tell any difference. Have you seen any comparisons there?

I didn't have any S-video cables to compare with on this video. In previous instances, S-video has played a close 2nd to YPbPr. If you're interested in those comparisons, check out my PS1 adapter review - ua-cam.com/video/by0y-Jo8yNA/v-deo.html. I'm fond of saying that the biggest move you can make for your retro consoles is away from composite. Each upgrade after that depends on how picky you are about PQ - and the quality of the S-video or (other Component cable) you're upgrading from.

If your using your saturn on a modern HDTV... You will want to combine your HD Retrovision cable with a device called OSSC. It will upscale your image without lag. Not Cheap, but the only way to go IMO

Awesome setup! Can you please tell me where you got the shelving from and what model? Thanks!

The bookshelves for the games, or the media cabinets for the consoles?

Sorry for the late response. The console cabinets are the Mosjo TV units from IKEA.

Retro Tech Select where can I get shelves like yours 0:14 . They stack nicely. would be perfect for my place. Are they Book Shelves or entertainment centers stacked on top of each other?

These are Mosjo TV units from IKEA. They are pretty affordable, so stacking a few together was a nice option for me.

I agree component cables are a nice upgrade but in the trade off the colors do not look the same? I bought a set of Saturn component cables from RGC and I am very happy with my purchase.🙂

well well... NO comparison with RGB cable..
Compare composite cable vs component is like comparing and old doge with a Tesla .... of course the result is better !
now component vs RGB .. not so true !! But I guess since you never knew in US RGB systems, we can forget you ...
