As a Barnacle Volunteer, I am always trying to spread the word about this very special part of Miami’s history. You have nailed it with this vlog. Congratulations on a fantastic job!
John Palenchar thank you so much for your comment, it means a lot!! And thank you for your work keeping the Barnacle the beautiful and special place that it is!! 🙏🏻 one of my goals with this channel is to share the history, people and places that helped to make Miami and the south Florida area what it is.
I lived in Dade county for many years and never visit the place even tho I heard about it. Through your video I can finally see it. You did a great job.
This is pure Travel Channel stuff, Jackie. Better, in fact. Your commentary and musical soundtrack are superlative and the manner in which you presented this information was respectful to this man's legacy. Wow. This is really top notch. Thank you. ~M~
That's a nice house and interesting how it was built. Definitely a bbq true bbq craftsman. There aren't many people like that anymore. People don't really reuse stuff anymore.
RhettyforFun It’s so true! We can learn a lot from frontier life, like making quality items that last, and re-using materials rather than throwing everything away. Also, using better materials to start with, rather than “throw away” plastic crap! It’s inspirational seeing these homes and items that have stood the test of time, high quality and made with pride. It’s definitely coming back though, there are movements in that direction.
Thank you for sharing. Very interesting. Neat way to have a door bell. My favorite was the bed he made with a matching doll bed. So neat. New subscriber 198 and 21st like.
What a wonderful video! I fell in love with the barnacle, it's staff and volunteers on my very first visit and have returned dozens of times since. The amazing staff and the volunteers produce many incredible events but my favorite is the recreation of commodore Munroe's "Washington's Birthday Sailing Regatta" which is held every year on the Saturday after presidents day. Although modern boats may participate, this event is primarily for classic and classic designed vessels. The public is encouraged to join us for the Friday night concert and regatta the next day as we honor the commodores legacy by dressing in classic attire and sail into history....
Michelle Mcconville Thank you so much! That sounds like a wonderful event, I will definitely try to attend! Thank you again for your comment and for letting me know about the regatta!! :)
My family built their house on the South Florida ridge, 2547 South Bayshore Drive across from Monty’s Restaurant. Bayshore Drive was their beach. Year 1894! My grandfather, father and I grew up there. We had 3 1/2 acres dry and 3 1/2 acres bay bottom.
I love this place, have been here a few times. Its so relaxing, I love to sit on the porch with a beautiful view of the bay. Very interesting story of this family. I hope the property stays as it is.
I love looking and hearing about history. I wonder why he didn’t just build ontop of the house instead of raising it.Thanks so much! Great video. #rwoty
I love it too, one thing I did not mention in the video is that bell was salvaged from a ship! Munroe would go out and salvage tons of cool things and re-purpose them.
My grt grandparents built at 2547 South Bayshore Drive, across from Monty’s Trainers in 1896. We still had stables and their carriage and a Chicago windmill, iron water pump and an out house with the moon in the door. My mom, sold the property and now it has 83 condos. GlennFHoward
My grt grandparents, William and Lottie Clearers Filer moved from Key West to Elliott’s Key in 1882. They raised pineapples and Citrus fruit. Their farm had a dock on Sands Cut. In 1896, they iced to Lemin City and built Filer Hardware. Their sons started Filer Plumbing. Lottie and her two friends started “Mothers for Education”, the precursor to the Dade County School Board. Their oldest son Henry Filer ran the Dade Country School board for 35 years. Filer Elementary was named after him. GlennFHoward
Thank you so much, Michael, I'm glad you enjoyed it and I appreciate your comment!! I have sooo much more Miami and south Florida history I want to cover!!! :)))
Ernie Fullwood & Crawfish Eddy had the first shacks out @ stiltsville. The Quarterdeck Club was the coolest place, it’s under water next channel over from yellow A-Frame @ stiltsville. Barnacle was there all along. Mud Blacks - Mathasons- Darings.
Original “better homes” were built on the south Florida Ridge and facing SE to capture prevailing breezes. Kitchens were built LEE SIDE, the back of the house. Cool air coming in the front pushing heat out the kitchen door in back.
@@SuperEnthused Great video how come not many views ? Maybe you tube censorship ? You'd think this would be an international tourist site.. it is... Hmmm. ! Great video kind regards
It's so strange, I guess because we in the UK always built houses of thick solid materials but houses from that age are up and down pretty much most towns and in most cities. Rows and rows of them. This is pretty though. To put it in perspective. Where I live was built in 1790 originally and places built in the 16th and 17th century that are lived in day to day are still lived in as houses. But it is beautiful no matter where you live to have and appreciate both architecture and history. Brilliant Vlog, thanks for sharing.
Thank you, it really is interesting! I love visiting places that are rich with history. The United States is a relatively young country,, and south Florida in particular has been blasted with so many hurricanes that have destroyed so much of its young history. Couple that with developers who would see all of south Florida's historic buildings and sites demolished and turned into condos, and you can see why any bit of history we have left is precious! It's such a contrast from UK and Europe, where historic architecture is part of the everyday landscape.
Super Enthused Yep I completely appreciate that the weather and building materials typically used means not a lot is left. Its a beautiful place you visited. Got to love a bit of history. That's why l try to talk about the history of foods in my cooking videos.
Gosh, top 5 in Florida is tough! It depends what you like. I’d say Walt Disney World and the Florida Keys for sure, and from there, depends if you like parks, nature, beaches.
I believe The Peacock Inn predates the Barnacle. Also lots of fisherman homes lined Biscayne Bay. Lemon City was started In the 1870’s. Check out the book LEMON CITY By Dr Thelma Peters. Also Tequesta Magazine is loaded with info. GlennFHoward
Miami Historical Society publishes an annual book with the most interesting stories, biographies and Diaries of south Florida. Tequesta Magazine. The Downtown Miami Public Library has all the issues. GlennFHoward
PBS, here I come! Hope you all enjoy this bit of south Florida history. The Era of the Bay is a fascinating period.
