I don't know much about making edits and I can't speak for everyone else but what usually draws my attention when I'm watching a fan edit is parallels. Every great edit needs: 1) a great song choice (particularly that fits for a certain ship and the lyrics fits well for certain scenes) 2) parallels (significant moments/scenes that relates to one another. It's very helpful and always makes the edit better. Ex: Kara telling James in Season 1 about not knowing much about romantic love or being good at relationships but if she ever had it, she would fight for it. A parallel to that moment will be any scene where Kara fights for/defends Lena) 3) voice-overs (not always necessary but can be helpful especially when it pertains to a certain scene. When you parallel a certain scene w/ a voice-over and it connects well, it can be brilliant) Those are the things that stand out in an edit for me. There are other things like colouring, quotes/lyrics, special effects, etc but only if a editor wants to add those. It depends on your preference. What's also helpful is how long you want to make the edit for. Whether you do a short video like 1 or 2 minutes long w/ a song but you edit the song to fit the time frame of it and certain scenes or you do a regular/full length video at 3 or 5 minutes w/ the whole song or you do a special tribute w/ 3 or 4 songs and the video is 10 minutes long or more like this one you did. It all depends on what you prefer and how many views a edit will get. I hope my tips are helpful 🙂 Then again I wouldn't know as I don't know how to make edits, I'm just going by what grabs my attention the most.
