According to William Adams' own records, the ship he was on was the Liefde. Arriving at Oita, Kyushu, the crew were helped , treated kindly and looked after by local Japanese common people. The crew of the Liefde were never boiled in a big pot or never abused.
Great serie! Mostly quite acurate in showing Japan in this time period. One thing though: the samurai would not walk around cutting off peasants´s heads. Although they could do so, they had to follow certain rules. If a samurai had beheaded somebody for not showing enough respect, he would have to turn in his weapons to his lord and was kept in house arrest for 3 weeks, in which his case was investigated. He had to present witnesses for his claim, otherwise he could be forced to commit sepukku.
I'm surprise Blake and Jake only recognize one actor (Anna Sawai) from Monarch : Legacy of Monster. Takehiro Hira who play Lord Ishido Kazurani is Hiroshi Randa, father to Cate and Kentaro in Monarch.
Anjin is the word they’re using for “pilot” of the ship.. which seems a deliberate PUN.. since this is the “pilot” episode of the series.. thanks so much for reacting to an amazing show! You’re in for a wild riide!
I read the novel years ago and loved it. Saw the mini-series in the 80s, loved it. Can't wait to get into this series and see how they honour the source material. You guys have great stuff
There is the book Shogun 1200 pages by James Clavell. The daughter is one of the producers. There also is the 1980 9 hour mini series with Richard Chamberlain that you should compare. And Hiroyuki Sanada who plays Toranaga is also a producer. The show is steep in actual history. Toranaga is actually Tokugawa who did become the Shogun of Japan in 1600 and his family line ruled Japan until 1856.
7:18 The marriages he consented to are his men's daughters or sons with people from other unaffiliated or rival villages and regions. Adding people from neighboring fiefdoms to your clan via marriage is the old-school way of gaining land -- short of winning wars of course. Edit: Also, they didn't have PH back then. So... yeah. That's how some of the big boys did it back in the day.
Glad you are watching this show. It’s so well done and does have that Game of Thrones vibe. The costumes, the old Japanese language (cause they don’t speak Japanese as we know it, the actors had to learn old Japanese), the acting, the music etc.
I keep telling people to close their eyes and the actor Cosmo sounds like Richard Burton but it occurs to me that possibly/probably none of you remember/know what Richard Burton sounds like. 😕
I remember him including the whole Elizabeth Taylor 'thing' 😁 Also, I think Cosmo Jarvis sounds like Tom Hardy trying to sound like Richard Burton who's doing Shakespeare 😆
Hopefully after this series you guys can sort of understand the word “honour” that’s in Asian culture, especially the Japanese. Rather die than being disrespected. God knows we need a bit of this honour in 2024, seeing how crap & shameless society has become.
this series is a remake of a HUGE HIT on network tv in 1980 based on James Clavell's book. it is fiction but based on Real Historical people in Japanese history; John Blackthorne on William Adams, Lord Toranaga on Ieyasu Tokugawa and Lady Mariko Toda on Lady Gracia Hosokawa. I am surprised you guys don't recognize Hiroyuki Sanada as Lord Toranaga!!!
The really cool thing is that the two greatest Japanese actors of thier time each played Toronaga, Tishiro Mifune in the 80s version and Hiroyuki Sanada in 23
For the Japanese death was so normal and natural, even average, that Yabushige (the one who ordered to boil the dude) looking for this essence of death is mystical in its own twisted way :) This series is better with every episode. I'm in huge awe. The actor who plays Yoshi Toranag (Hiroyuki Sanada) was also a producer and he was very determined to create the show as close to the reality of this historical period as possible :)
Oh y’all are in for a ride!!! This show can’t help but grab your attention, the characters, world building, cultural nuances and sneaky politics with Samurai!
I have a suggestion for a film for you to react to: CRAWL (2019), a very good and interesting horror about killer animals, it has a great moments of tension and good performances, you'll like it.
I'm turning Boba Fett into a Samurai Bust model out of cardboard on my page 👍 it's nuts love this show so far new episode today UK but watching it tomorrow
You gotta watch Tokyo Vice instead! Another American Japanese production with predominantly Japanese cast and great acting and story! You're all missing out fr. Please react to it
At first, the use of English instead of Portuguese in the show bothered me, considering that Portuguese is my native language. I would love to hear my mother tongue, even if it's in European Portuguese. I can understand why incorporating three languages might be confusing, though.
Finally caught up , now I can watch my gentlemen of raggedy pack .reactions .. this is the series of the future! It’s so good. 🫖🍵🪕👘💙🤍💛 heehee mr. Jake love it 😊

Thanks for the comment! Will pass this along to Igli! - Blake
mini-series.
An epic samurai miniseries like no other

Good series. You're in for a treat, and it's very on trend for reactions right now. Welcome to the party.
Hell yeah, solid choice. I'm stoked for this.

Colonial history in any form is a Positive for future generations
Thanks for Shogun review. I want more. Ty!
Don't go too hard on yourselves boys. Sync shit happens. You're doing great.

A guy like John who is based on a real historic person has not "plot armor". He just lived on in real life.
The eyebrow zoom was a nice touch.
Glad you are watching this show. It’s so well done and does have that Game of Thrones vibe.

Its flawless so far

This show is top tier, best show of 2024 rn imo
Such an amazing show! ♥
Love the show
You guys should check on Blue Eye Samurai if you haven't already, great series with a similar time period and same vibe, as Shogun.
I love you guys and I just found you! You all are amazing
This series is so good. 😊
❤The original series from 1980 was very good, based on the book, very outdated for sure but the 2024 version is excellent as well.
I have a suggestion for a film for you to react to: CRAWL (2019), a very good and interesting horror about killer animals, it has a great moments of tension and good performances, you'll like it.
19:53 LMAO!!!
Yo Blake, let's go Cards baby.
Incredible show to add to the roster. Unfortunately most of the time i was lost is Jake's eyes
Blake is so cool
I'm turning Boba Fett into a Samurai Bust model out of cardboard on my page 👍 it's nuts love this show so far new episode today UK but watching it tomorrow
Shake N’ Bake, Blake N’ Jake 😁
I know it’s cringe but I had to say it ❤

I can understand why incorporating three languages might be confusing, though.
It would have been near impossible for production (translation in 3 languages for everything), finding Japanese actors who spoke Portuguese etc.
I'm Glad New Zealander Anna Swai is in this. Her Monarch character is so annoying. Here, she gets to flex a compelling and complex character.
PLEASE REACT TO THE COVENANT 2006 FULL MOVIE 🙏🏼
I ship Blake and Jake = Blaake.
Legit the worst reaction ever the one guy watch way ahead then start to spoil wtf is wrong with t his dude
Yeah he’s so messed up! We’re kicking him off for round 2 so don’t worry! It’ll only be the second worst reaction you’ve seen!
@@RaggedyPack that's one hell of a reply lmao😂
Love you reactions but prefere three people. Also to catch your faces - with four just too hard...
