I think this movie really resonated with all the people that work hard and don't complain when they are served crappy food or given bad service or had to deal with rude people. How he responded to these people was kind of the fantasy of what normal people wish they could do but in reality just keep quiet and don't do anything and move on.

This movie laid groundwork for alot of '90s anger.
Unfortunately, the game has only gotten worse as more Americans now play by "Can't beat 'em...Join 'em" rules.

@@Anthony-kw4en lol Yeah, but this film is mostly about how modern america turned its back on the straight white men working class.
D-Fens is a villain but also a victim if u see it from his perspective which is what this film is trying to show you.

"D-Fens" represents the "Forgotten Man." He looks like a throwback to 1950s America. The white shirt and tie. The brush cut hairdo and horn rimmed glasses.
The Everyman who feels they have been let down/left behind by their company. Who feels like a stranger in their own Country, as more and more people immigrate to the big cities of America. Who feels taken advantage of their whole lives.
However "D-Fens" is a tragic character- He is a man having a psychotic break with reality. And yes- some viewers getting a cathartic release from his lawlessness in the first hour may have been just as surprised as D-Fens was when he exclaimed "So I'm the bad guy?"
Michael Douglas has said that of all his films, this was his favourite role.

When the movie came out, Michael Douglas called this the most important role hes had. He made the same statement as late as 2016 when he was asked what was his best role. He is very proud of 'Falling Down'. When they're on the pier and he says "It was hot today, wasn't it?" Thats he moment I knew he chose to go out right there.

After the end of the Cold War, the defense industries in Los Angeles began laying off/firing their labor force.
My friend's father was working for one of those companies. He was let go after 30+ years with them. He was kinda bitter about the end of his career.
Not as bitter as Michael Douglas's character though.

The wife is the actual main villain. Notice when she's talking to the cop he gets her to admit to lying about him being abusive (implication of it being physical), which is why he is unable to see his daughter. She "thinks he might/could do something", which can be said and is true about literally anyone and everyone. I obviously don't condone his actions throughout the film, but knowing this context makes me understand why this man completely snapped.

I’ve seen people mischaracterize the intent of this movie, had he not met these low lifes it could have been vastly different. Like a pin-ball machine he was bumped from object to object spinning more and more out of control until events shaped his actions. You were exactly right; having lost his bearings in life he couldn’t understand the implications of trying to see his daughter. I’ve walked close to his path and probably there has been of lot of others who have as well.

    Hollywood Connections:
The asian Detective is played by Steve Park.
In '89, Park played the Korean store owner, husband and father in 'Do the Right Thing'...
Willing to DEFEND his business with a push-broom against a fed-up mob.
    Mmmm. 🤔
In '93, this movie shows Michael Douglas as 'D-Fens', a disturbed ex-hubby and father unwilling to let his family and go. Scary.
In '96, Park appeared in 'Fargo' as an ex-schoolmate of a mother-to be Sheriff and a stalker of another woman he knew in school.
He claims to work for Honeywell (which does DEFENSE Contract work), in Golden Valley, MN.
    (I live 5 miles away).

"Now, let's go meet some nice policemen. They're good guys. Come on, let's go."
    "I'm the bad guy?"
    "Yeah."
"How'd that happen? I did everything they told me to. Did you know I build missiles? I helped to protect America. You should be rewarded for that. Instead they give it to the plastic surgeons, y'know, they lied to me."
"Is that what this is about? You're angry because you got lied to? Is that why my chicken dinner is drying out in the oven? Hey, they lie to everyone. They lie to the fish. But that doesn't give you any special right to do what you did today. The only thing makes you special is that little girl."
You know, Prendergast is totally right. Foster is totally out of control and in the wrong here. Life sucks, but going on a violent rampage is never the answer.
Fun Fact: "Man On The Edge" by Iron Maiden is based on this movie. The music video for "Walk" by Foo Fighters is inspired by, and mimics the movie.
Colors Connection Fact: In the scene in which the drive-by car crashes, there is a mural of a Hispanic depiction of Jesus on the wall. This same mural is also present in Colors (1988), also starring Robert Duvall as an LAPD cop, in the scene in which the police officer played by Sean Penn spray paints a kid's face.
Historical Fact: The movie was being shot on locations in Lynwood, California when the 1992 Los Angeles riots began. By April 30, the riots were sufficiently disruptive to force filming to stop early that day. Film crews produced more footage inside of Warner Brothers Studio in Burbank as the riots continued. By May 4, when the crew intended to resume in Pasadena, initial requests to do so were denied, causing delays. The tension around the riots was something that the filmmakers deemed to have an effect on the finished film. The Korean American Coalition protested the film for its treatment of minorities, as well as the South Korean grocer. Because of this, and the boycott threats that followed, this movie was banned in South Korea.

McDonald’s among burger joints sued for false advertising May 20, 2022
(NewsNation) -It’s long been a running joke that the meal you unwrap from any given fast food joint rarely looks as dressed up and put together as it does in advertisements.
But one upset customer has had enough and is asking “where’s the beef” in a class action lawsuit aimed at McDonald’s, Wendy’s and other fast food restaurants alleging they’re engaging in false advertising by showing a product in ads that is a far cry from what comes in the paper bag.
In a 35-page complaint filed in a federal court in New York, a lawsuit alleges McDonald’s and Wendy’s engage in false advertising by overstating the size of their hamburger meat and amount of toppings that come on their food in their ads.
The lawsuit specifically targets the Wendy’s Bourbon Bacon Cheeseburger, which it says appears much thicker, juicier and with more toppings in advertisements than the real life product.
McDonald’s and Wendy’s are also coming under fire in the lawsuits for not using fully cooked beef patties in their commercials, which appear larger than cooked patties, as beef can lose up to 25% of it’s size when cooked.

I put a lot of blame on the events on this movie on the ex-wife and the judge. Sure, a divorce was the right thing to do. Sure, the mother was better getting custody. But totally cutting off a man who loved his daughter (and looking at her expression when she first saw him on the peer, she loved him too) none of that was right. Society loves to kick people when they are down and act totally without accountability in thinking "Why did he do this?" when said person snaps. Bill may have been a monster by the end (though I don't fully think he was) but he was the monster society built.

I have to disagree. People need to take accountability for their actions..i come from a family of divorce and it saved my mother's and our lives. @@FlixTalk Don't get me wrong, he should be held accountable, but so should the judge and his wife. The law has a tenancy and so do a lot of ex wives to take away the kids from the fathers. In a number of instances, without proper access to their kids, the fathers can be painted in a negative light by the mother towards the kids on only hear one side of the story and grow up believing their father's were monsters, when it may not have been the case. In this instance, Bill should have been ordered by the judge to seek anger management and be allowed to visit his daughter who he NEVER hurt and was happy to see him. But as the wife said, gotta make an example out of him. Judges don't always get it right either. You take away all a man has left, then don't be surprised if a man acts like he's got nothing to lose.

I remember feeling not economically viable the year before this movie after being unemployed for 14 months and knowing what it's like to starve at the age of 25. But fortunately I got a call from the JTPA office letting me know I could work with them till they help me find another full time job. Sorry, enough of my sad story. Anyway way to go this is a favorite of mine, Falling Down. Watched this at the theater In 93. I remember watching this movie at home with my sister who was 20 at the time I loved to creep her out by repeating what the nazi creep would say, we're the same you and I we're the same, think about it. She'd say, I'm going to call 📞 mom😅. Then the movie that followed that was the bad Lieutenant. Couldn't have been any better lol.
