(28 April 1882-14 August 1963)
Hilja Kainulainen was born in Kuhmo, graduated from the upper secondary school in Oulu and studied to be an architect in Helsinki 1903-1907. She also studied fine arts but it remained a hobby for her.
After graduation, Kainulainen found work in Tampere at architect Wivi Lönn’s office. Her most significant work was the renovation blueprints to turn Kruununmakasiini into the Tampere Art Museum in 1930. In 1911, Kainulainen married Werner Gestrin, a businessman from Tampere. They had two daughters. Hilja Gestrin stayed at home to take care of the household but she also occasionally worked as a teacher.
