As a musician from Cebu with experience in backyard studios, I truly appreciate the significance of backyard culture for Cebuanos. I have fond memories of playing with my now-defunct band back in 2003, and I remember watching Gabby Alipe and The Dub practicing while we waited for our turn to record a demo with Mikmik (Smooth Friction). Breaking into the music scene in Cebu can be incredibly challenging if you're not a talented local, especially when you're from a different place like I am, having grown up in Bulacan and moved to Cebu. The music I was listening to at that time was Sugarfree's "Sa Wakas," which wasn't really popular in Cebu. In a way, I felt like I was living in Manila in my head while I was physically in Cebu. Despite this, I tried my best to keep up with the music scene in Cebu, which was more focused on Deftones and international sounds. However, it was tough for me to keep up since I was used to different genres of music. Ultimately, since I was only 18 years old, I had to stay in the Cebu music scene and eventually stopped playing altogether. I also wanted to acknowledge and commend Rayms for asking such great questions during the interview. It's always refreshing to hear someone who can bridge different topics seamlessly. Finally, I'm grateful for the opportunity to have Franco on the show. Thank you for letting me share my experiences and insights as a musician from Cebu.
and yes, It's worth mentioning that Slapshock actually recorded in Backyard! One of my bandmates, Junrey, played the violin in one of their tracks, which I believe was "Ants."
I can still remember hearing “Castaway” before going to college in USC Talamban. I had been a huge fan of Urbandub since the 6th grade and having Gab and Janjan as members of Franco (not to mention the ‘superband lineup’ they had) only made me gravitate more toward their music. Castaway really takes me back to those days of being homesick and somewhat discovering my youth. I felt bad during their first gig in USC-TC when they played in front of a “dead” crowd (after a very energetic performance from Powerspoonz) but felt happy when they eventually got the recognition I always thought they deserved after that gig. Suspitsados! Nice and chill episode, Sir Rayms and Darren! 👌🏼
I got a copy of the cd the he made while he was staying in the US. It was given by his friend which is my fellow worker. He told me "you got to listen this one, made by one of our locals. His name is Franco Reyes" Then years go by. And one day I heard a song from the fm radio, I stop and listen closely because it sounds familiar. I waited until the end of the song and maybe the dj will say something about that song. And then it was Franco! So I run upstairs to check that cd but I couldn't find it anymore!
I was an avid follower of both Frank! and Sheila and The Insects during the late 90s sa Cebu. On weekends, i spent my money following their gigs at Ribo's, Padi's Point, Artist Dais, Morrissey, etc. They honed their chops doing these gigs. :)
Ilang beses ko ng napapanood gig ng Franco pero naninibago parin talaga ako everytime na marinig ko speaking voice niya. Also, grabe! swerte ni Rayms! napanood na niya Mars Volta! Thomas Pridgen's a friggin beast behind the kit
dun pala galing un Castaway, sa malamig at madilim ng sulok ng bhay ni Franco sa Silicon Valley! great songs come from unexpected/peculiar environment kumbaga, as a surfer (kuno, 1 time lang eh nuh) ayos un mga recommendation ni mr surfer guru Franco bbalikan ko to pg gsto ko mg reset🌊🏄
Omg, superb ka ,sir Raymund 🥹 sobrang targeted ng questions mo,naConnect the dots lahat ng tanong sa isip ko as I was trying to catch up with Franco (new fan here 😁🥰) .. this is so highly appreciated ❤️❤️❤️🤗Good job,as in 👍🏻❤️🔥🤩
Hopefully in future mafeature sila Reg or anyone from Greyhoundz, gusto ko makita yung vision saka yung history nila bukod sa (RH Docu couple years ago.) More Power Sir Rayms and Daren!
Nice episode, very chill. Yung mga laking dagat, alam na alam yung sinabi ni Franco na “ang ganda ng Pilipinas” at yung ginawa nina Raymund na tambay sa dalampasigan para tignan ang sunset. Iba yung epekto sa diwa.
Manila ako lumaki and province namin ang La Union. Napunta lang kami dun kapag may gatherings and realtalk kapag may yumao lang. Back in 2017, me and my band napagtripan namin magELYU. Magcamp along beach and magpunta sa Tangadan Falls. Hatian sa gas, tolls, foods etc. 1st day, super naaamazed ako sa sunset ng San Juan. Orange to pink sky, then tamang cloudy and along the beach nagtatakbuhan mga surfers, (NagSURF din kami) tapos kami ng mga tropa ko tamang chill inuman and gitara.
Franco's debut album was prolly the first OPM album purchase that I ever made if I remember correctly, and it totally blew me away, still one of my favorite OPM artists ever. 🤘💯
Actually may surf spot sa Catanduanes yung Puraran Beach sa Baras, tumugtog na dun ang Franco if naalala ni Islaw then meron din surf spot sa Gubat, Sorsogon yung Lola Sayong tapos sa Bagasbas Beach sa Daet, Camarines Norte Sakto yung release nila ng new songs this coming summer, favorite ko ngayon yung Aurora Sunrise 😊
I'm a huge fan of these guys after hearing them from one of my old friends. I'm from Guam and really want to watch these guys live :(... Also, is there a way to upload an english version of this?
Pagdating na surfing na at mga surf spot na topic ang sigla ni islaw..idol talaga napaka simpleng tao..sana maka tugtog kayo dito sa puerto princesa city..may surf spot din dito..🤙🏻🤙🏻🤙🏻
