- A sagging chain is a result of normal usage of the garage door opener. Watch this video and see the professional at Town & Country Door LLC demonstrates the simple techniques that will restore the tension of the chain. As a result, the garage door opener will run smoother and quieter.
I am vision-impaired and could hear the garage opener getting louder. Thought it was time to call the repairman. After listening/"watching" this video I was totally surprised that even a blind guy could easily adjust the chain tension. Thanks so much for a video that served the handicapped folks as well. -ss
Just tightened my garage chain, one thing to add is make sure your chain doesn't start twisting. Along with tightening chain 1/2 inch above the midpoint, lubing all the bracket joints, replacing those crappy wheel that come with the door and getting anti vibration bushing where the motor meets the hangars then you'll have a door quieter than a church mouse
This is an excellent video and so helpful! You are a calm teacher not assuming we know anything. Which I don't! How could i without being taught 💪 THANK YOU
A before and after to illustrate the sag of chain would be nice and zooming into the area being adjusted.
Yeah, awful video
I agree, I hate videos that don't show a before and after.. plus how many turns, measurements. Make a good video!
If you listened carefully , he clearly said adjustments the tension so the chain is 1/2" above the rail.
@@anonymousgoogle7117 above the rail? So the chain is so tight it's bowing above the rail? Or below the rail?
@@anonymousgoogle7117 How can it be above the rail when the sprockets run on the centre line of the tube. I agree with previous comments showing where you measure the 1/2" from.
Not sure how much money you just saved me... but Thank You.
so i tightened my chain, used lithium grease on the chain, tracks, wheels and rail and now my garage door opening and closing is extremely quiet, cant even hear it in the house anymore. i always thought i just had a loud garage door opener, but started looking into tightening the chain and this video right here just showed me something that seems to obviously clear now. thanks!!!
Thank you. I never knew about the proper amount of tension and you cleared that up for me.
That HAS to be the quietest chain door I have ever not heard.
Thank you for the video - for clarification … after looking it up further … “above the rail” means above the bottom of the rail… one thing he failed to mention is that if you have a “T Rail” it’s 1/2 “. But if you have a “square rail”…which he seems to have in this video- it should be 1/4” above the bottom of the rail only. Also- remember not to create TOO MUCH TENSION on the chain… as this will be bad for the sprocket which actually turns the chain from the garage door motor… too much tension is bad for that sprocket and will result in a more expensive fix… or potentially needing a new garage door opener.
Straight to the point, appreciated, maybe these asshats that make a ten min video on this will learn 🤣 but I doubt it, it probably works on all garage doors today belt included, mine it did but ya need a little slack 👍👍 thanksman
This was very helpful to me. My door was making a huge racket, and now is sounding smooth. Thank you!!!
Nice and simple video
You are right. it sounds "more quieter."
Thank you for this vid! I did not know this maintenance procedure! Door opener works much better now!
Thank you, this helped me a lot
THANKS SO MUCH!!!
thank you. your instruction was simple and spot on.
Awesome
Great tip. Thanks! No more noisy door! (Or complaining wife)
Soooo much more quieter
Thanks
Hey, I installed a new garage door opener about a year ago that uses a rubber belt. Today the garage door would not open. It seemed to have too much tension trying to lift it. It felt "spring-loaded". Do I need to decrease the torsion spring or adjust the tension on the sides of the door...or just tighten the belt a bit more? I un-snapped the door from the opener and opened the door manually. It felt really heavy to lift (tension against it) and it would not stay open. If you have any clues or video links, please respond asap. Thanks!
Thanks for the video? Has a loose chain ever been associated with the door not going down?
When I tightened the screw, only one side of the chain is tightening up, the other side of the chain (the side without screw) still sagging. I tried to pull the chain to this side. It did not work. What can I do? Thanks!
after tightening still way to long. about 6 in hand down. How do I reduce the slack?
wish you would of showed the actual slack spec of what too tight is. i know what its supposed to be when i adjust my motorcycle chain. so im guessing is somewhere about the same if not tighter because there is no suspension travel.
Thank you for video. In my case the chain has a lot of slack and when it closes motor keeps on moving and stopping until I open and close several times then it will stop. Why this happens and how I can fix this problem.
Slack
Why no reinforcement struts or a stronger L bar mount ?
looks like he is turning the outerbolt (on the left) counter clockwise while the speaker is saying turn clockwise???
What if the chain is too tense?
I've changed the chain and the gear, and now the door opens about 4 inches and then closes. It does not matter what I do with the limit switch assembly, the door do the same, opening about 4 inches and then close again- Thanks in advance for your answer!
Mine doesn't have this it has some kind of metal piece with a plastic piece in it..how is that type adjusted?
hello, thanks for the wonderful video. I have a problem with my garage door opener, it opens half way and then turn reversed direction and shut. I check all possible obstacles in the tracks, nothing was found. Do you have any suggestions? Mine is older model chamberlain part 41A5483. Thank you
Just hold the button down until closed
I’m having trouble with the other side of the chain not having slack enough to click on to the hook. Pls help
That a quiet Door mine wakes up all the neighbours with all the squeaking
My chain assembly has a plastic piece with two bolts how do you tighten this type. That are directly in the chain-link. Genie Pro Max MODEL number PMX5OOIC/B
I have the genie model 1022 and could use some guidance as well
I did the same thing but it became more noisy. Sound like chain is not exactly seating in the sprocket so i returned the chain slack.
I would add you have to be carefull that the chain doesnt twist when you go to lock it down...
What if your chain doesn’t have that bolt? Mine is over 50yrs old :(
You said turn the nut on the left clockwise what he turned it counter clockwise
Should of shown the chain to give a idea of how much sag is appropriate.
Hi;
Have had the garage door company that installed our Liftmaster, (2 1/2 years old.) as well as another company come to analyze the following problem;
The "shuttle" that snaps into the other "shuttle", will intermittently jam.
The motor hums when you push the button to open for a few seconds each time, but the door will not open.
If I tap the shuttle with something while motor is humming, garage door will usually open properly.
One garage door company said "probably the motor". Second one said "needs new circuit board".????
This is an intermittent problem, and obviously is very troublesome.
Chain appears to be proper tightness, and has been lubricated properly.
(1/3 HP motor..Aluminum 2 car garage door.)
Would appreciate any feedback. re; this...
Thnx!

What was the solution to your issue. 2 1/2 years is too soon for an opener to malfunction IMO.
I was wondering if you experienced the same problem with the door connected to the chain as when the door was not connected.
I'm having the main unit replaced under warranty (not a Liftmaster) due to a few issues during the first 4 months after it was installed.
I’d take the outer cover off the unit and observe the plastic ring and pinion gears and see if they are starting to strip. I’ve had to replace stripped ring gears on my lift master from 1996 in the past because someone hit the door rail and then they tried to operate the door
can't figure out why the plastic gear keeps stripping out, any input?
I'm no expert, but in the interest of being helpful, I'll volunteer an opinion.
Likely your opener is working to hard. You should check your spring configuration.
Unlatched the door from the opener. Lift it up from the bottom of its travel to confirm smooth motion. Binding and jerking during travel in either direction causes additional load on your opener. Your track may be bent or twisted, or maybe the entire mechanism is dry and needs lubricated. Check out other videos for tips on how to properly lubricate a garage door.
Stop the door at approximately waist-high. Optimally, the door should move neither up nor down (balanced). If not balanced, then a slight downward movement is OK.
If it falls from this position, you need to tighten your spring adjustments if possible.
if it raises from this position, you likely have too much spring pulling upward.
You may be able to adjust your spring tensions to relieve some of the load on your opener. Check out other videos for tips on how to make these adjustments.
There is also the possibility that your opener is just too lightweight for your door configuration.
Check these things. If you don't find anything radically out of place, may be time to consult with a pro.
the plastic worm gear and drive gear needs to be greased twice a year,
The Chamberlain model advises you to release the mechanism from the door before adjusting. Don't ask me why that is necessary since I've tightened them up before without releasing.
Why am I researching this issue? The bozo who installed chain drive unit (not a Chamberlain) never properly adjusted the chain tension, and my unit was a BOX RAIL (not T-Rail as shown in this video) so a saggy chain will contact the chain enclosure. A chain on a T-rail will not have this particular problem.
why would you not show the chain.
i’m guessing the company went out of business because they don’t answer comments. FOOD FOR THOUGHT.
look somewhere else.
