Israel Galván "La Curva" during IV Dutch Flamenco Biennale - Rotterdam, 20 January 2013

As the son of a Sevillian dancer, Israel Galván was brought up on flamenco. The Spanish choreographer and dancer followed in the footsteps of his father José Galván and his teacher Mario Maya, but came to adapt tradition to his own purposes. Israel Galván dances on the edge, breaks up traditional movements, abruptly changes the rhythms and freezes his position at the most unexpected moments. 'Galván shows his mastery by standing still', wrote the New York Times. In his work, Galván unravels all the elements of the traditional flamenco to create a new flamenco space and then connects them with music and dance from other genres.
In La Curva, a tribute to Vicente Escudero, a revolutionary dancer from the last century, he does this with Inés Bacan, one of the most sensitive voices of the cante jondo, his loyal rhythm companion Bobote and jazz pianist Sylvie Courvoisier. Israel Galván writes the flamenco tradition; let's join him in that.

Este hombre es un verdadero creador revolucionario, con propuestas únicas y sin duda con una técnica más allá de cualquier cuestionamiento, Evidentemente se enfrentará a la férrea crítica de aquellos que se aferran a lo tradicional y ven sus propuestas como una transgresión intolerable; pero eso siempre pasa con los genios.

Ein überaus talentierter Tänzer, der den Flamenco anders interpretiert....auch das hat natürlich seine Berechtigung. Kunst hat viele Facetten. Und jeder hat einen anderen Geschmack...Gott sei Dank....Man mag es oder man mag es nicht. Ich persönlich finde, wo in dieser heutigen Zeit Traditionen immer weniger werden, um so wichtiger, dieses zu erhalten. Ich mag den traditionellen Flamenco nun mal lieber und harmonische Klänge sind mir angenehmer. War aber trotzdem interessant, eine moderne Interpretation, die in einem eine Geschichte über diesen Ausdruck im Tanz transportieren soll, zu sehen...gefallen mag es mir aber nicht. Trotzdem Dankeschön an den Künstler, es sieht einfach aus, ist es aber nicht.

You understand nothing of this, if you say this. This form of art seems to be beyond your comprehension, at least for the moment. But such has always been the "fringe", or simply the...different. However, Israel Galvan is an amazingly wonderful artist.

NO cabe duda de que te quedaste muy atrás, es una pena… pero lo común es que aquellos como Israel que revolucionan las artes, se enfrenten al rechazo y a incomprensión de los que se aferran a lo tradicional.
