Can you tell a pigeon's sex by looking at its toes?

- There is a theory that says you can tell if a pigeon is a hen or a cock by looking at its feet and toes. Today I'm testing that!

Can you use a magnet instead?? See here: ua-cam.com/users/shorts2GV0qVjTfkU?feature=share
In My opinion there are only three ways to tell if a Pigeon is a Cock or a Hen 1. Do a DNA Test 2. Wait until they are fully grown and observe their Anatomical Features and behavior A Mature Males head and neck is a little larger than the Females and he Struts and Coos in a Bossy Elaborate way with a rising and falling pitch and the Female responds to that display by bowing and cooing submissively making a softer less pronounced sound, some females also make a grunting sound when You try to pick them up they also hate being handled and they won’t keep still and constantly try to break free from your grasp while the male on the other hand will just settle down and relax when handling them and 3. Wait and see which ones lay eggs the ones that do are definitely Hens.
This is the smartest comment you've ever made ;)
I usually just look at the bird and be able to tell by the shape of the head but sometimes that’s a little difficult
Keep the videos up mate 👍
That's a first for me. My take on that theory could be different strains of pigeons. For example, one strain of birds may come with uneven toes, whereas another strain are even toe. Of course you'll have to take look at the crossing of the strains. All in all, I wouldn't breathe life into the toes theory. Keep up the good work 👊🏽
I would rather to wait the bird start pair and laid, sometimes its not really getting correctly if you follow the theory
Hi Adam , good test , I have tried sexing the birds like that with same results.
Very interesting…….I suppose you have already done a video previously on sexing the pigeons but would you be able to do one with your preferred method of sexing your young birds. Thanks for sharing Adam. Here’s hoping you have a wonderful and very successful 2025 with your racing endeavours.
Honestly my preferred method is just observation. Watch them long enough and they show it themselves.
@AdamArcherPigeons : Thanks Adam. In my youth (and I can not recall whether this was accurate or not) but once the young birds were fully feathered you would hold them with one hand and then with other you would gently pull the beak forward and if their tails angled down to the ground they were females and if their tails rose slightly upward then they were male. I am not sure whether if this was definitive or not but thought I would share with you.
Hi Adam,
Great work!
I have heard of the theory where you hold the pigeon upside down in one hand with its head gently folded backwards against its own body.
After a few seconds in this position, if it struggles and attempts to get out of the position it is a cock and if it stays calmly in that position and doesnt attempt to free itself it is a hen.
Have you heard of this?
All the race birds that have won races in your fed more females or males?
How about the magnet theory?
Hold a magnet with a piece of string above the pigeon.
If it swings back and forth it is a cock. If it swings in a circle it is a hen??
i've heard of people taking a pencil led about 2'' long tied to a string . hold it over the bird's head . if it swing back and forth it's a cox and if it circles it's a hen. you can actually purchase these. but i don't know it they work.
This is a myth
Not sure of the pencil led, but have used a ring (gold) on a thread, and proceed in the same manner. The bird should be tightly contained in a small cardboard box. It definitely works without fail. (No myth)!
Could this still be valid but for specific breeds of pigeons?
It's my experience that toe length is dictated by genetics. Though there is a lot of variation in the lengths in pigeons, in my old line of Rollers, the length and comparative evenness is extremely uniform. This family is intensively linebred and inbred and was passed on to me by mentor, who in turn received them from his mentor, who in turn received them from his mentor. They have not been outcrossed since at least 1935 and were the result of the blending of two closely bred pure families that dated back to the 1880s. They are probably one of the oldest pure lines of pigeons here in the States today. Under the toe sexing theory, they would all pass for hens. By contrast, I also have closely bred lines where the toe length is always uneven, sometimes significantly longer on one side than the other, while in others, toe length is really all over the place. Just as is with other morphological characteristics, genetics are what dictates it.
Just watch your birds sooner or later they,ll reveal all.....
بسم الله ماشاء الله تبارك الله اللهم زد وبارك ❤
Look i learnt all about pigeons from my fathrer and the other fanciers in the club , but there was this old guy in our club who could pick a hen from a cock in the nest by ring date 7 to 10 days old use to ring his hens left leg and cocks right leg, and was never wrong, i asked him and i asked him., and he never gave up his secret. Except he gave me a hint an thats all, maybe to completely just throw me off track. He said its there vet size
If I have porridge for breakfast it’s a cock bird and if I have corn flakes it’s a hen…..🤔or is it the other way round? 🙄
