I like these "how to" videos for people who plan on visiting Japan one day. My wife and I are planning to go maybe next year or the year after so all of these videos, along with your main channel ones, are super helpful in showing us where the cool spots to visit are and how to get to them!
Mate, thanks so much for this video. Helped me out when we got there. Charged our cards at the same terminals and took your advice and went straight for Keisei, and we even got a seat.
Ive rewatched this twice. The airport is so different from yhe last time I was there. You make even the most casual.viewer feel confident to travel to and explore Japan. JNTO.should sponsor you. You are a national treasure.
I remember a long time ago, I snuck on the Narita Express at Ofuna, to Tokyo. I was drunk off my gourd, and it was allegedly the last train out of the station...Then the train starts to PARK! Of course they find this schnockered gaijin on board. They did some quick searching and found that EVERY TRAIN going my way had already left. JR paid for a TAXI from Ofuna to Fussa to get me home. NO KIDDING. I swear it happened.
SLACKPLAN9 I believe it!! In general, when you are in trouble, someone will help. I’ve heard that the police will also help if you are in dire straights. It’s a good topic for a future only in Japan episode but in general, people have a responsibility to take care of what’s in front of them. Remember the Japanese fans cleaning the stadium during the World Cup in Brazil? It’s just an amazing part of the culture. It’s not EVERY company and EVERY situation but it occurs more often than we realize. Thanks for sharing the story! -John
Also I enjoyed the video because it allows people to be familiar and know what to expect when they arrive. Helps with people who are unfamiliar and new to traveling. Keep up the good work John.
I was impressed with my recent layover in Tokyo at Haneda airport and transit at Narita airport. When I use to visit family as an elementary age kid, not much people knew English. Now as an adult there are more people familiar with English. It definitely helps when Tokyo 2020 is around the corner.
Thanks man, this is so helpful. Everywhere online has been saying take Keisei to Nippori then transfer to JR Yamanote, but your way is so much cheaper and takes about the same amount of time. So glad I didn't miss that little snippet in the description.
Wow this video is exactly what I needed! I'm going to japan next year and I'll be staying at Ueno so this is perfect. Thank you so much for the info! Is super useful!
Thank you so much! This was the most helpful video for our trip to Japan. My family and I just returned from Tokyo. Very useful. I was less overwhelmed when we arrived Narita because I watched this video a few (or several) times before heading there! We took Keisei's into Asakusa. Piece of cake! Arigatou!
I feel like SUCH a goof. When we arrived at Narita, we got the bus into Tokyo and it was crowded and hot as anything. This seems much more relaxing. When we go back, if we fly into Narita we're doing this. (Air Canada flies into Haneda so we may use that instead.)
Thank you! This is so helpful! This is the part I worry about the most! Getting to my hotel after arriving into Narita really late. Hopefully the trains into Tokyo city still operate after 9pm
john, we finally got to try your guide to go fr narita airport to shibuya and it worked great! thank you so much for posting the vlog. we took the narita express tho since shinjuku and shibuya was our choice for the day. stop over fr bangkok to oahu, hawaii is our home.
it will be our 1st time riding keisei train in March nxt yr, this helps ease my anxiety 😂 it reminds me of nankai train for some reason, an hour ride too
John maybe you know this already but the iPhone has FeliCa built into it. It was added with the iPhone 7, but with the Japanese version iPhone only. However this year the 8/Plus & X all support FeliCa and it doesn’t matter what region your phone is from. It uses Suica not Pasmo or any other regional cards. It should still work all over Japan though. You can add the card to the passbook AND you can recharge it with Apple Pay. So you don’t have to wait in line ever again. Unlike other Apple wallet cards you can set up Suica to work without unlocking the phone (optional) so it works just like the card. Just tap your phone on the gate or reader at a vending machine or convenience store.
Your guide really helped me out when I went in 2019. I was able to get a softbank wifi and took the Skyliner to see the sights. I think I might fly into Haneda next time however. Easier access to Tokyo.
One thing to note: if you have a JR Pass the Narita Express is included with that. When you pickup your pass at the airport office, they'll book you at the same time so you can avoid the lineup for tickets.
Love your videos and even if its been a yr since you uploaded this vid. But still great! At the end of video I heard you say you lost your luggage. I hope you got it back.
Its good to see you back in Japan John and thank you for those tips. Really planning on going by Fall and flying into Tokyo then do the JR pass instead of going to Kansai Int Airport since there are more cheaper flights to Tokyo
I have little to no experience using public transportation in a massive city. I have to try this some time. The learning curve is the experience. Get wifi on your phone and fill it with maps of train lines. Trying to get help through communication would make things worse.
@@brandongentzke2953 Google maps will be your best friend no real issues for me just needed a sim card. Eventually was able to route with just the maps Suica is the first thing to buy though its well worth it
Poor thing! Thank u so much for all of ur amazing videos John! Very informative and ur easy to pay attention to. with ur good looks and captivating voice! I love it, and want more please!
Watching this on 2022 with a trip to Japan in mind. Mine will hopefully be Narita to Niigata & whether I can do that all in one go (after a long flight) or if perhaps staying over in Narita or Tokyo and heading off the next day is a better bet. But I appreciate you showing the options of travel. I've always gone with Narita Express. But this one's fine too.
I always buy my ticket online for Keisei because as a foreigner you get a discount. Only downside you have to go to the counter to show your passport and get the actual tickets you trade your voucher for the tickets.
John, you can also get a SUICA card and use this as virtual SUICA on your iPhone as Apple Pay card. Works only with Suica so far but the IC cards are compatible with each other since a few months or a year ago or so.
Cool.. never really thought about catching the Keisei trains. Always use the NEX as its very comfortable, or catch the YCAT to TCAT which is pretty convenient sometimes when you need to change lines.
John did not tell you that he came into Terminal 2 at Narita. (That is why you could easily go to Terminal 3.) Terminal 1, at a high level, is very similar, however there are some notable differences also. So if you arrive at Terminal 1, go down to the basement, but it will not be exactly the same.
Thank you so much for posting this video and many others. We wanted to visit our Japanese friend in Ina city/Nagano (+visit Tokyo, Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe, Nara) but chickened out when thinking about arranging all transportations from the airport to hotels to bus express/trains to several destinations, renting phone, etc. You've made things less complicated. I did take a tour a few years back and visited Tokyo, Kyoto and a few other cities (can't remember). This time we'd like to go on our own so we can spend longer time in Japan. Again, thank you. Have you worked as a tour guide?
Can you do one on complete setup such as getting rail pass, getting shinkansen ticket, getting NEX from NRT to Tokyo Station, using subway, Suica card, etc.
I made it a habit to spend the first night in Narita when I visit and visit the temple in the morning before taking the Keisei line into Tokyo. To me the Keisei line costs less and I get to enjoy the view better. ^_^
The audio isn't great and it jumps around but I had the chance to make this and I did it on the fly :) Love just being spontaneous with this channel. Thank you Josh!
Whatever you do, should you arrive at Haneda late at night & decide to stay in the airport, trying to sleep in one of the handicapped toilets (which are incredibly clean and may have a soft surface contraption inviting to lie down on) may not work due to old dude guards checking if the toilets are occupied too long during the night. I ran into the same problem at Ueno Park, arriving super early one sommer morning via the overnight bus from Kyoto. I lied down for a bit, mixing with the homeless guys but soon after six, old dude guards came and made everyone sit up. There are limits to Japan's hospitality.
Always worth mentioning, there's a JR Pass available to tourists which offers unlimited travel on a good amount of the JR/Japan Rail services, including some of the slower services on the shinkansen, and I also believe the Narita Express (N'EX) is also supported. JR Pass is not valid on Keisei services though. If you're gonna be using the trains a lot around Japan, it's worth investigating to see if it's worth it for your trip.
I think since they’re opposing companies, most people get it but good to point out. Not everyone wants to start their pass at point of entry. You can use it and also save a day by not using it because the Shinkansen is much more expensive to use. Most people just head from the airport to the hotel and that’s a day.
Yeah, definitely worth considering delaying the start of the JR pass. My first time to Japan I was there for 9 days, claimed my JR pass upon going through the airport, but had it start 2 days later (was a 7-day pass); the rest of the journeying was on a SUICA card up until my JR pass started. I also just realised that the time I went, N'EX was on offer where tickets leaving the airport were 50% off, whereas they were full-price the way back.
I didn't know that the common ticketing machine even at the other railroad system can also be money depositing (adding) machine. I was told I had to use only with dedicated depositing machine when I bought a Suica card many years ago.
