I download the subtitle my self then soft code it using mkvtoolnix . Works fine
Plex has a huge amounts of problems with subtitles. The user interface should be easy but plex just have screwed It

I have about 700 movies, and I applied these settings PLUS added the extra agent. But it for some reason only downloaded subs for the first 100 movies in my library, the last 600 is still missing. Is there a limit to how many subtitles you can have or download?
I can't see any menu that lets me adjust subtitle colour, size, sync etc. Pressing M doesn't work. What device is this on? I've tried it on Ubuntu 14.04 and Windows 10.
I enjoy how most of the explanation is done vocally on this video. Going to make a bet that many of the people watching this would like subtitles on this video in order to get subtitles on their movies.

I do not have Freebase option under Agents/Movies. Mine says Personal Media then Plex Movie in the center option not freebase, and then on the right is The Movie Database. I have however managed to get it to work for tv shows. although sometimes the wrong subtitle is found which is rather funny to read. So thx for the tutorial. I have not managed to get the manual srt's to work but will try the remove the movie as someone below suggested. Perhaps that will work

Plex Agents (Extra subtitles tutorial)
Does not work as shown in tutorial. Nothing pops up and I do not get verification email to create account. Same goes for a friend.
I think you left out an important information for the people here. Go to each folder and click on edit, advanced, under "agent", change it to freebase. Do this for each movie/tv folder that you created. Default is set to The Movie Database. Hope this helps

My plex server in windows 7 does not have this option in my TV show folders but freebase option does exist for movies? Is this normal?
For TV show folder, I have it set to TheTVDB. Also make sure under settings>server>agent>tv>TheTVDb, opensubtities.org should be on the very top of the list.
Hi. i did what the dude said in the vid, but when playing a movie i dont get the options or subs at all. my goal is to actually watch movies from my laptop on my smart tv. they are also already connected, so i can watch movies on my tv. the thing is that i also want subs, but there's no option for that. i even got the srt sub files which i can normally view on my laptop. i dont know if this made any sense. hope you guys could help me.
Kubera You have to be specific. Are you using plex via the webpage? plex home theater software? phone app? There should always be a subtitle icon (looks like a chat bubble). Also, make sure your .srt/.sub files are rename the EXACT as your movie file (e.g avatar.mkv and avatar.srt) or it will not show up.
I have a problem with subtitles when I stream to my Roku 3, the subtitles are not matching the audio, it's delayed by 2 seconds and it's quiet annoying. When ever I play on the computer it works fine, only have this problem while streaming, any ideas for a fix?
This is done automatically now guys! Start your movie and click on the text bubble icon in the upper right hand corner and you should see the option to select subtitles. In my case I see the word "English" because that is my default setting along with all of my other settings.
Why can't i just import my own srt. files? the subs won't sync in some movies
+Loekie Entertainment You can actually, just put the srt files in the same folder as the movie or tv show and give it the exact same name as the movie or tv show you want them to be synced on. Once you've done that and you watch the movie or tv show, you should be able to find them when telling your plex to enable subtitles (while you are watching the movie, or even before when it gives you the options to choose whether or not you want subs)

Thanks for this tutorial! Just a tip for everyone, you don't have to use "M" to go to the subtitles menu, you can just type "S" to cycle through them.
What I would VERY much like, but have been so far unable to do, is get Plex player on ROKU Ultimate to play movies and display subtitles from the source in THIS order:
1. Embedded. If it's embedded, use THAT subtitle.
2. .srt file with same file name. If the subtitle file is in the same directory, and has the same name (minus extension) use that.
3. If there is no embedded subtitles, and no .srt file exists in the same directory as the video content, download the closest matching subtitle and use that.
Is there any way to achieve this? I am constantly having to manually select the subtitle stream for .MKV files that have embedded content, even though I have set the PLEX server agent to 'use local media' first in the list of subtitle sources.
How do I get subtitles to show for non english speaking parts in movies only? Example: A group of bad guys speaking in a foreign language in front of the protagonist. Normally in the movie, subtitle would pop up for this part.
allright so this is a couple of months old and I just discovered this. But for me I cant seem to find a way to get the menu for subtiles during the movie.
For example. Black sails episode 10 perfect right away dutch subtitles and the correct ones.
but the movie cut bank wrong subs wich is even more anoying then having none.
For me I am only gonna use plex to stream the files directly to my smart tv wich will result in a better quality then trough my hdmi cable cause of the only weak point beeing my onboard vid card.
is it posible to get the subtiles on the tv too ? and how can I get the subtile and sound menu during the movie in the chrome cast plex player ?

+zidey It took me a while, but I figure it out. You have to remove the media from the folder, and add it again. After that it works. The problem is that the metadata is messed up, so by doing this, the meta data gets refetch again and it all works now. The only proble I have now, is that I get like 10 subs to choose from :)

after you do this, then how do you tell plex to fetch all the subtitles for the movies/tv shows you don't have subtitles for?
Maybe someone here can help me. I can see the movies in the library of the media manager just fine, but when accessing the media server through "Computer" I only see the movies for which I haven't added any subs!
Ok I press M for the menu right. I use to be able to choose the audio & subtitle by pressing arrow buttons. However the new plex player dont allow me to cycle through any of the Menu buttons. Help

It explained nothing about using the subtitles or how to get them. Am I to assume that subtitles are downloaded magically after clicking these boxes in the settings? Because if so, it is not working for me.
SpaceNavy90 Normally yeah, magic, if not, check that the names of your video's are correct. f.e. if you magically acquired the new transformers movie, most of the time if the name is trnsfrmrs it won't find it, but if the name is transformers and then some extra info such as 1080p ... then it'll have a better chance of magically finding subtitles to your movies or tv shows, I'm sorry that it didn't completely help you... i hope this comment does! If not, then I've failed you, and I will magically apologize for my shortcomings.

Is it true there is no option anymore to offset the subtitles? I can't find that anywhere anymore and sometimes subtitles are out of sync.

I'm having problems with Subs on Plex. I've checked your tutorial and I'm doing everything ok but still they don't show up on the screen. I even have some of these subtitles on the same folder that I have the movies and I can't see them. Any idea of why is this happening? I would love to know also how to create the new extra agent like Podnapisi please! Thank you!

This could be because of the name that your tv show or movie has, f.e. I have a movie on my hard disk that came as "IS.1080p....." and i had to change it to Ice Soldier so that the subtitle could be found for that movie.. and sometimes the subtitles are just not out there for your type of movie or tv show, i will look into other problems that might cause you not having subtitles! But i can't promise anything
