Great video. I also cover my grass areas with cardboard to make or expand a flower bed. In October I put cardboard, then compost from a dairy farm, then leaf mulch down... in the spring it will be ready for me to dig and plant into into and then cover with more bark mulch. I have done this for the past two winters and I tell you it has made my spring planting so easy. The hardest part is waiting all winter to get into it. I did have my neighbor ask me about the leaf mulch blowing away. It doesn't- even thru some big winds. I don't know the science behind it, but it doesn't blow away.
I really appreciate you expressing that you don't enjoy mulching and that you got tired. Social media so often removes the normalcy of life to favor perfection. Your garden looks great! You've inspired me to expand my own hell strip garden this year. Thanks for all the videos.
Thank you for your inspiring video! I started sheet composting a very large area of my yard and got a bit overwhelmed. Then the dog days of summer hit, and I stopped. Now fall is here, and I'm ready to get out there again! Your garden is lovely and makes me excited to get going again!! I noticed that you have a lot of clover in your grass. I have over seeded my "grass" with clover twice because I've read it is quite drought tolerant, and I love the looks of it -- great for the pollinators too!! Thanks again for the encouragement - I'm energized!! ❤
It’s always a pleasure to see a garden emerge so quickly and weeds disappear without a lot of work which is why I love sheet mulching. I like your idea of transferring weeds from all over to the new area.
Great tips on adding a new bed Jay. Yes, I agree, if you can add some top soil or compost before the mulch it helps immensely in keeping it all together. Your garden is breathtaking and it is REAL! Thanks for sharing it🤩
You’ve really inspired me. I thought I was probably consigned to container gardening. But this looks totally obtainable! My mind is buzzing with the possibilities. Looks beautiful!
When you quoted "an hour", I was like, yeah right! I've been waiting to see your process from the beginning, so thank you for this. Could you show us propagation if you do it? Your edges are perfect!
I agree with comment of a real gardener! This is why I love watching Jay. She does the gardens herself and we learn on how to have a successful garden. I have used he
Great video on sheet mulching. You've inspired so many people to start a garden with this method who otherwise would not have done so. Thank you for sharing. 🌻🥰
Love Love Love!! This is exactly what I want my little gardens to look like !! Not having a whole team of workers is so encouraging !! I can do this by myself❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴🪴
I apologize I didn't finish the previous comment. I have used the sheet mulching after watching one of your videos. Thank Jay for sharing with us on how to creat a garden bed. You make the edge of all your flower beds perfect.
Happy Sunday, Jay! 🥰🌱❤️ Another nifty project done, so kool! Your garden was the inspiration for me to add a flower bed to my garden last year. Love how you do everything on your own, so it shows me I can do it too. ❤ I really need to get an edger tool. 🤔
Great job! I’ve done a few (& have a few this season to tackle) and you made it looks so easy peasy! I know it’s a bit of work! You did good Jay! & LOL at the blooper! You’re face tho!! 😆😆😆 thank you! 😊♥️
This is exactly what I needed to see before I start over my garden bed in my front lawn. I moved in my house 2 years ago and my supposed garden bed in front became engrossed with so much weed that I started over and took out most of the weed and I recently bought native plants to occupy the space. I get super overwhelmed when I see my yard but your reminder to take it one step at a time makes me less stressed out. What would you do if the soil is more of a dry and clay type before planting? I was gonna loosen the soil with my fork and mix in compost and then plant and she sheet mulching but wasn’t too sure if that was the right step.
Love your channel, Jay. I’m building right along with you with dreams of having gardens as beautiful as yours are! What are your thoughts about sheet mulching around trees in a parkway? Thank you for teaching and inspiring
Gosh Jay I really don't know how you manage to do this entire garden bed fully clothed!. We have extreme heat indexes in deep south Texas and cannot spend too many hours at a time outside. I would garden in a bikini, but I won't do that to my neighbors as to prevent their eyes from bleeding and giving them PTSD from the experience!
Hi Jay! I enjoy watching your work and have started to experiment with sheet mulching myself thanks to your encouragement. May I ask where you like to get your compost and mulch? I’m shopping my options locally.
Hey Jay :) I'm new here but I already love your channel! I have a question: I hope I did not just miss anything out because I'm german and my English is not perfect 😅 - so greetings from Germany btw! ☺️ How long does it take to plant flowers or new plants on the free spots in the bed? I want to plant bushes along a fence and flowers in front, but if there are too much holes for the plants I'm afraid that the grass will come through more quickly.. What do you recommend? Should I plant the flowers in front a bit later? And when is it possible? Thank you so much 🫶🏼
Great tutorial! I just love your gardens! Do you just put the dirt you remove from edging back into the part of the garden you are covering with cardboard?
@jaysgardenjournal I added mulch and that helped a lot! I also dug a wider trench, which seemed to really help also. Thank you so much for your input, and especially thank you for the inspiration!!! You've become one of my favorite gardeners to follow ♥️
Hi Jay! Beautiful garden. I’m a newbie. Is the top soil and mulch added just to hold the cardboard and newspaper down? And do u get rid of them in the fall? Thx for your tips ❤
What do you mean by “nteresting weeds” in the grass? I have ajuga in our grass. Will this be problematic if I do sheet mulching. Do you advise not sheet mulching but just picking up the sod if there’s bad weeds?
Your garden is the real life garden. By one woman. Not a team of workers behind the scene. And it's beautiful. Natural. No poison, organic. I love it.
Thank you! All of the above! 🌱🌱🌱

You are very welcome! I do all of the work in my garden and 1/2 of my garden is a mess but it’s my mess. 😄😆 Thanks for watching! More to come!

You are brilliant, awesome use of cardboard and newspaper. I love it! 🌱
Thanks so much 😊

Awesome! So glad I came upon this as I’m soon planning to do something similar!!
Looks great! Lots of room for more plants. I love sheet mulching.

Thank you so much, Nancy, for being on this journey with me! 🌱🌱💕💕
I love sheet mulching. Doubtful I would’ve started as many beds as I have if not for sheet mulching. And it doesn’t take long.
Indeed! 🌱🌱🌱

Looks amazing. 😍😍 Putting some stones on the edge will keep the mulch contained in the space.
I prefer a natural edge🌱🌱

Fabulous! I love your honesty! It’s not easy, but worth it! What shovel is that you use?

What are your thoughts about sheet mulching around trees in a parkway?
Thank you for teaching and inspiring
Thank you! 🌱🌱 I don’t have very old trees but I would be reluctant to do so on top of old exposed roots.
Thank you… the trees are about 5-10 years old. Think I’ll take your advice😊

Beautiful work! What kind of mulch you use? I have the red color and want to change it.

Yes I do! I try to repurpose as much as I can.
@@jaysgardenjournal I'm getting ready to try this for the first time! Thanks for the inspiration!

Yes I did. Very little this time
Hey lets build a water garden!
Yours is amazing! I did this last week and it literally looks like boxes with mulch on top. What have I done wrong?
Not enough mulch? 🤷🏾♀️

Yes, it is! And no. It decomposes. Thanks for watching 🌱🌱
Would you wait until the following year to plant in the free space or just check if cardboard disintegrates?
Just a few months ago

How deep do you dig the edges/outline?
È un bel lavoro, ma i cartoni devono essere intonsi, senza inchiostro e adesivi se vuoi essere veramente green! Brava, from Italy!!!! 😊
I don’t want to be truly green. 😁
I want and will be me. 👍🏾
