Power doesn't necessarily corrupt. Like everything else, it depends on the individual. The corrupt individuals are just more likely to be the ones that make the news and the ones that we remember. People behaving in an honest and decent manner is not considered newsworthy.

+zero eh, lack of empathy could go a long way regardless of how "good" of a person you are. Think of it this way. You could have a really sweet person who always treats everyone around him really nice but doesn't hesitate to kill insects if he sees any. Whatever your stance is on this. This is a demonstration of lacking empathy for a less powerful being. Simply putting yourself in a more powerful position can cost you your awareness of how cruel you can be.
Especially when you isolate yourself from less powerful/wealthy people you will lose the ability to relate to them properly. You may think of them as savages or morons because you don't understand what it means to have an education of less quality. And just because you weren't born as powerful as you are today doesn't mean you can't forget what it was like 10-20 years ago when you weren't. Then there is the I don't see it so it's not there mentality when you can ruin someones life without ever knowing what exactly happened to him.
Then there is the fact that the more pride and status you have the easier it is to offend you, or for you to get mad at someone being the slightest bit disrespectful to you since you gain this "he's so beneath me" mentality that makes everything one "beneath you" says even more offensive.
Imagine you having someone talk smack about you that really hurt your feelings or just makes you mad as a weak person vs,. when you are strong enough to add his face to the floor with out getting a scratch, 7-8/10 would totally do it regardless what they tell you in there own experience.
Temptation is big the easier it is...
Then there is the "us vs them"- group mentality that makes everyone not within that group unrelatable and worse than you by default. Like someone from youtube saying "let's bomb every Muslim" without knowing how muslims are actually like...

It's true. People who were bullied at school tend to become Police officers so they can feel powerful. Personally I'm an INTP, so I have no desire to control people. I do like to control computers though.

To me, corruption from power is the same as someone who has been poor their whole lives and are suddenly gifted with a windfall. Both are going to go crazy with it unless they have something within them to curb that impulse. (Another way to think of it is if someone who had been bullied their whole lives, suddenly becomes popular and becomes a bully themselves.) I think if someone is going to be given a position of power, they need to have a strong sense of empathy. If you know that something you're going to do will hurt other people a strong sense of empathy will make you reconsider. (Empathy = "How would I feel if someone did that to me?" )
+AmyD It is also probably best that they actually have experienced the hardships themselves without being handed that windfall so quickly - as long as that same person also recognises the struggles they experienced.
It also comes from upbringing as well - perhaps if they carried any negative traits from their time of hardship, it could manifest itself into the new situation once that position of power comes along.
I like to believe I would never be corrupt if I got such power, but I do stop and question that judgement. There must have been plenty of people who never believed they were capable of being corrupt because they believed they knew their nature, but then they fall to that corruption anyway.
Perhaps one key thing to remember that no one is perfect, not even yourself, so if you are aware that you may not be impervious at all to corruption, perhaps you stand a better chance of not being corrupted.

I don't think power corrupts individuals in any way, but instead it gives them the ability to be themselves without persecution from others. In other words, it draws out one's true personality which would otherwise be kept hidden from others.

I've had power before, albeit only middle management power. Judging from what people under me said, and by the party thrown for me when I left my job, I think I did reasonably well. But then again, people do tend to say one thing and think the opposite, especially in a work/political arena.

That power is the ability to accomplish great works; that power should be guarded and only given to those who seek power to achieve great deeds; not given to those who lust for power for the sake of power.
I've seen it happen first hand.. Honestly I'm quite proud to say that power did not corrupt me as it did some of my closest friends :(

Actually, it's both and neither. People are claiming that power doesn't corrupt and people are also claiming that power does corrupt. However, it's not the case that it has to be one extreme or another. There is a middle ground and heterogeneous mixture of the two, that ultimately leads to corruption. Power, gives people the opportunity to express their very deepest desire without much repercussion. Individuals whom were already corrupt seem to seek power in order to further their motives. Subsequently, the attainment of power can push those who otherwise wouldn't have been corrupt to corruption. Therefore, power is a powerful influence over those who lack the willpower to resist abusing it. It's like a creeping death, slowly but surely it will be exert influence over your choices, given you lack conviction and perseverance.
I like how this video provides substantial evidence to back up its claims then there's just random people in the comments disagree saying it the individual...

How many times you wanted to hurt a stranger (weather it's trump, a police man, or your school principle) becasue they lied, or didn't treat you the way at least you wish?
We all have dark side inside us, no matter who you are, and we want to hurt others, but we just don't have the enough power to do it.
Now don't get me wrong, I'm not saying we are fully evil, but I'm saying that every person have the bad and the good in us, but we need the right power to accomplish it.

My prof made an announcement about a lab being postponed and my ta refused to accept my assignment stating "shuld have submitted online " even though prof made the announcement himself. Even if I contact prof, he will Leave it up to the ta to solve the matter as profs r busy with other work and research. I have faced many teaching assistants using their power against fellow students without understanding their situation.

if I might add... the more you know yourself, physically, mentally and spiritually (like morals and values; what you stand for), the more you can do to avoid these pitfalls. if you learned here or in life experience, or a class or book about how power can alter the human psyche and what the warning signs are, you can rage against it yourself.

The key preventing this is to have a unchanging bedrock to build your morality on. I hold myself accountable for my actions and I know that God will hold me accountable for my actions. No matter how much power I get I will only use it for good because God holding me accountable is not going to change based on the amount of status/power/wealth I achieve.

Yes it can. If a person becomes inflated within their own ego and don't have a strong moral balance on truth and possibilities. Those who can't weigh up a circumstance with a balanced approach or perspective. People crave position and wealth too much. They love to have the upper hand.

personally I have no idea what would happen to me in this case. Every one that I have met has said I'm a caring, honest, and respectful guy. Every time I say that I'm evil or hatred incarnate they would burst out laughing and say it's impossible. Yet sometimes I feel as if I deserve power. Or at least have some sort of control. I tend to stay away from areas of power unless no else is able to take it. But it would be interesting to see how power would affect me.

I think one must have a constitution both mind and body that mirrors or is greater than his visions to actually achieve a powerful position yet staying pure(with a society that is practically living in an ideal Utopia) at the same time. At often times the energy and quality thoughts required to handle situations that require great responsibility falls short with what actual need that arises with it. Corruption is a result of unfair and unscrupulous behavior, mostly relative to a person's brains reward circuit and it's states under the state of stress. Once you hit a point of stress, your body compells you to alleviate that. Which is probably the case. Highly stressful situations I think tend to equate propotionately to that...
I would like to believe, that if I was giving a large amount of power, I would use that as a force for good and for the betterment of those under my control. However, the power would likely get to my head eventually.

We all have a perspective on how the world should be. Some of us have certain ideals in common but ultimately it is our individuality that makes our concepts of utopia so different from one another. We ALL hide unpopular aspects about us in certain situations. Each of us calculates (more often subconsciously) what we should say or do when working with others that wouldn't jeopardize our status and power. When we obtain it, however, then we are quick to reveal how we truly feel. It isn't in our fault, we are just conditioned early on that in order to get along with others we can't be too brutally honest about everything or else we won't get the enact the few changes we want. Once we obtain a certain pinnacle of power in a given arena, however, we can be quick to make the changes we want.
Basically, deep inside everyone, we are secretly fighting to get to the top and make the world a better place. We just realize that too many people wouldn't let us get there if they really knew what we felt. My favorite way to combat this phenomenon is by playing a game of sharing your most unpopular opinions. This helps everyone share openly without regret or reserve what they feel and with no repercussions. So I ask that everyone please share your most unpopular opinions just to practice and exercise your honesty. I'll go first.

I am an ex-Muslim Atheist and I would like everyone to face reality and stop believing in god unless there is inexorable evidence that he or others exists. If so, then it should be shared, verified, and peer reviewed. Concequently I don't believe we should burn any holy texts and that we should still all learn about other religions. There are many valuable lessons to be gained from it. Obviously that's not a big one, here's another I have.
I don't believe any political system right now is optimized for human psychology or sociology. To work off our strengths and weaknesses, we should have geniocracy. Although the idea was popularized by some crazy UFO abduction cult, I like the idea of only putting people in power based on intelligence. This may be similar to a technocracy but it would be more scientific than that. A council of peers for a particular field would be the ones to vote and elect someone who has studied and worked in a given field. For example, someone in charge of water distribution would a qualified ecologist or a chemist elected by other ecologists and chemists. Our individual popular vote doesn't matter that much in Presidential election anyway, so let's at least do away with careers in politics and abolish the use of money in politics and commercials. Equal representation for all candidates. Which brings me to my next unpopular idea.
The abolishing of money is another goal I would like to see met. We should stop fighting when technology is created to steal our jobs. This is a good thing! The fishermen invented the net, not to steal the jobs of those using spears, he just wanted to optimize his work and free his time for other tasks. Likewise, we shouldn't fight when we invent technology to take away our jobs; this is a good thing! We need to liberate ourselves from work and drive technology to take away all jobs and care for our needs. Ultimately, we can develop technology to provide automated food, water, heat, electricity and other resources to everyone but only if we stop fighting technological growth. This will of course make money obsolete and remove most reasons for conflict and crime. I know I am sounding Zeitgeist-like but while I don't agree with Joseph on everything, I can definitely see hope in that ideal.
By the way, my most unpopular opinion is about conspiracy theories for a one world government. I am all for it! We need a world government to unite all our nations and people. We don't need these invisible lines drawn in the dirt to separate us. We need to come together and recognize the world has gotten far too small for each of us to act like we live in distinct nations with boarders that cannot be crossed. In our globalized world, we cannot continue acting like we live in different countries, especially with the advent of the internet.

It's not just power. It's the Verticalism tied with it. So long as our social structure measures the worth of a man based on how much he dominates others, there will continue to be conflict. All of our great discriminatory -isms stem from this.
It's interesting from a meme and evolutionary stand point. The fact that this is something which is either in human nature or a result of the meme in our society which continues to propagate. Meaning this trait of those in power was more successful at surviving than the trait of those with power not becoming corrupted.

So true, I'm the honest person in my family but I'm also the most corrupted one too. My elder sister is the most successful and powerful person in the family, and yes she's very controlling.
Power increases the chances of getting away with something, and everyone is an opportunistic piece of shit. It can also be difficult to get power/money without being corrupt; since everyone else is being corrupt, getting away with it, and getting ahead, the only way to compete is to do the same.
I think it's a bit of both, but mostly that people with tendencies to be corrupt will be more likely to gain power. The reason being that underhanded or questionable actions results in gaining the most power efficiently. Ambition in itself is something that makes a person more likely to be corrupt. Ambition is nearly a synonym for greed/lust-for-power. Sometimes it's for selfless purposes, but too often it is not.
Not to say that power doesn't contribute to corruption tendencies at all, but much of the reason why it may seem so is that without much power, it's hard to really notice that a person is corrupt. For one thing, the actions they do won't have as much of an impact, and secondly, they wouldn't be remarkable or noteworthy for anyone to keep an eye on if they're not powerful.
That said, that was my personal opinion before watching the video, and fully recognize (to a degree) scientific studies.

If I was in a position of power (CEO of a company, for example), I would be a self-righteous prude using my above average intellect and moralistic world view to control my workers, and thus my company's image. Giving praise where praise is deserved and giving constructive criticism where that is deserved. Never showing strong emotions in public and being excessively private about my own life, and protecting my employees' privacy as well, when it comes to personal problems and potential problematic situations cropping up.
This is what I think would happen, given my personality. :p
In Junior High School, in an American History course, we spent 1 week Role Playing as "Slaves" and" Slave Owners".
During school hours the "Slaves" would do what they were told to do by the "Owners", within reason. This was on school grounds only, and there was teacher supervision.
I was a "Slave Owner". I freed my slave in the first few minutes of being given the assignment. I remember my former "Slave" being bored without having a role to play like the rest of the class. I'm happy that I did it.
What happens when you interject up bringing, morals and/or philosophy into the mix. Or perhaps clarify what fairness is because ask a handful of people what their opinion about what is fair, you may get differing opinions.
My mother is an attorney who has taught me through the years how to be fair. I tried to follow her teachings so I would like to believe that when I was raised to a position of power that I was as fair as I could be. I took everyone's input, digested it and made decisions based on that input. If someone had a good idea and it worked, I would make sure that person would get the credit they deserved....,etc.
This is one of my mottos, Never forget that you are small. A lot of us tend to forget this maybe have a some forgiveness for other short comings

When I started my career at the very bottom, I made my mind up that I was not going to be one of those people. the whole way up ladder I strived to be honest, fair and to lead by example. It paid off with my receiving much respect and adoration. This is something I felt somewhat embarrassed by, as I was only treating others in a way that I wished and desired to be treated. Just doing my job with honor and dignity. I never had trouble sleeping at night

The issue with this is that a vast majority of my fellow"prison guards" are just regular people trying to feed their families. Corruption is more common in a prison in the areas where people are less security minded. For regular officers we are just trying to survive.
I have to wonder how often honest and sound decision making is perceived as corruption by others. For example, a high level executive could make some budget cuts or make some decision that seems to those below him, or directly impacted by his decision to be corrupt in motive, yet he might have been just doing what he thought was best for the company as a whole. Technically speaking, the wellbeing of an executive has direct impact on his direct reports since the loss of his job probably means the loss of his reports as well... I wonder how much corruption is just... a misunderstanding.
A companies stock price goes up by eliminating costs such as labor costs. This is why many companies shipped their labor overseas. The people put out of work would say this is a corrupt. The people who own the company stock would consider putting these people out of work 'just business' and the 'right thing to do' is bad business.

+Bram06 Power = Power. Greed = Greed. Corruption = Corruption. You can't just equate all of them. If anything Greed + Power (in a sense of ability/capacity only) = Corruption (depending on how greedy or how "powerful" you are, which would range from anything like disregarding the laws/rules like steeling some chewing gum to - well, fucking up the whole system for whatever reason and in whatever way you think works for you...)

lol I'm more compassionate and honest with power then without. but that's probably because I don't feel the need to hide under a harsh image to protect myself. It's funny because I'm also more likely to consider myself arrogant and selfish because I'm less afraid of being seen as weak.
and whats even funnier is the few times I have been in power and then lost it(assistant manager at a store), the people who worked under me wished I had stayed in that position because I tended to stabilize things.

this is easy if you have absolute power you will just say what you want and all your pawns will try their best but if your power is divided it takes permission for everything
if you've had power all your life, you've never had to experience a life without it and lack empathy. if you've never had power and come into it, you now have the means to do thing you formerly could not and so you lack experience and wisdom for the new decisions to be made. knowledge, experience and power must all be in harmony.
I would never be corrupted by power cause I've had more than I've wanted of it. be it money or responsibility, I would pass it around. from what others do with their new power, I could still be judged corrupt though as the burden would still fall on my decisions of who or what to give it to.
kind of a paradox really.
maybe we can cut to the heart of the matter by agreeing that the person in power themselves lacks the power to judge themselves in the eyes of society, so sociological perspective makes that call.

Hence why Marxist/Socialist/Communist ideologies fail. These 3 ideologies require power to be in the hands of central planners.
And with the power to plan distribution of resources and the Economy, they make terrible decisions, leading to a decline in living standards for all.
This is why Free Markets with minimal Government regulations are the best.
The dice rolling part was confusing and I'm sure there were other elements like.. "Nah I'll just roll them, who cares, they're already in my hand and dice rolling is fun".. or "If I guess it right.. then I'm going to feel good about myself and we all have an equal chance of guessing right so I wanna try and be right if I can".. Not so much "I think I have mind powers and can predict "chaos theory" because I am in a higher job possition than these other people" lol. I don't think they were thinking the last one.. but hay.. maybe they did think they had mind powers, even on a subconscious level.... Unlikely though. And certainly not all of them.
You neglected to mention the Just World hypothesis, a much researched cognitive bias in which people tend to assume their position (be it positive or negative) is a result of morally correct acts. This can influence moral decision making in the successful in a variety of (largely negative) ways.
