    I was gifted a copy of your book and I am enjoying it, and it’s not only inspiring me to learn Mandarin but my studies of the parallels of early Thelema and the Yi King.

    Thank you for sharing this! As someone who speaks neither classical nor modern Chinese, I find it really fascinating to see the way the language's development over time affects how people approach the I Ching. It's great to get a peek under the hood even though I don't understand how the engine works.

      My video making abilities at the moment is severely limited due to running out of disk space and still on Windows 7. 😅 The hubby says he's going to get me a whole brand new set up soon, so I figure I'll just wait until my tech is all set up before restarting video making 😅

    So perfect! Thank you so much Benebell 🙏🙇‍♂☯ I first encountered this phenomenon back in 1990 after reading Dr. Henry Wei's translation of the I Ching (unfortunately now rare & out of print) where he first pointed this out! I love to see your corrections 🙏🙇‍♂☯

    Does it really matter? What are the reasons for why it matters?
    Also, when is the new book version coming out? Will it have both the modern and classic pronunciations?

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  3 дні тому

      That's a great question! I think some will feel that pronunciation matters, whereas others are not going to consider it material. It's not a new book version; more just the next print run of the text. =)

    • @alchemygal3285
      @alchemygal3285 2 дні тому

      @@BenebellWen when will the next print run be out? Will it have both the modern and classical pronunciation? I think having both will be good imo.
      I ask cus if it has both, I can scrap the one I have for the new one. If it doesn’t have both, I’ll keep both copies.

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  2 дні тому +1

      @@alchemygal3285 it's probably only going to be the classical Chinese pin yin. 😊 As that is likely going to be the easiest and most efficient way to update to the text.

    I believe all the "classic" & "ancient" versions of language are more authentic in the sense that they hold more "power" and is more natural/healing.
    An example would be: I'm an English speaker & I felt a lot healthier after learning some Chinese (Mandarin). Learning tonals made me question language. I ended up learning about Sanskrit & how it's purely about the vibration/feeling of the words and not the "meaning". How each tone has a specific vibration that is healing to the physiology. When things change in language, it makes me wonder.... (Chinese is older than English by the way!)

    • @BenebellWen
      @BenebellWen  День тому +1

      The perspective that pronunciation in ancient times is more powerful than modern pronunciation is subjective-- valid for sure, but still subjective.
      Languages evolve to reflect the evolving cultural, social, and even technological needs of society. So I think it's more about being suited to particular eras, and I wonder if the belief that an ancient spoken language is more powerful than a modern spoken language is due to romanticizing the past. It is the perceived mystique and intrigue of ancient pronunciation that draws us. Also, I would argue that power lies in understanding and not in pronunciation.
      Ultimately, the only point I would try to offer is that there are differing perspectives here. :-)

      @@BenebellWen I understand what you mean and didnt really make myself clear!
      I meant pronunciation as in tones & octaves, like the specific notes played on a piano that can invoke a specific feeling or emotion + a specific hertz such as 432hz for healing;
      The "power" is meant as intentions. Like the way it's proven that how you speak to a plant matters (Good intentions helps grow the plant and Bad intentions kills the plant)
      It's less about romanticizing the past but admiring & honoring the intuitive aspect of humanity; it's finally being proven right now with Science. And yes, there's power in understanding and power in feeling.
      Logic & Intuition, not Logic or Intuition :D

    • @CoexistKay
      @CoexistKay День тому +1

      @@BenebellWen ALSO! I honestly think for the way society is now, with technological needs and all these other social constructs; alot of things got muddied and removed for the sake of profits/greed/capitalism.
      A lot of Ancient arts were genuinely created with health/humanity in mind, not profit or material gain.
      "It is the perceived mystique and intrigue of ancient pronunciation that draws us"
      That's the point! LIFE IS MYSTIQUE IT'S SELF, as we do not even know the true origins of where humans spawned from. Where & How were we created? The mystique is the zest of life it's self, that keeps us curious :)

    Thank you. I have to laugh at being characterised in the working class, poorly educated fortune teller category of Chinese speakers. It is a step up from uneducated Chinese speaker as I currently do not speak Chinese. As a result of purchasing this book, I am intending to do so next year. The historical references in the book are very enlightening and led me to think if the language has changed in over 1000 years or is it actually the same? I know that Middle English both sounds and looks nothing like modern English so I will of course have to get the audiobook to hear the classical version.

      @@BenebellWen I have been studying magick in many forms since I was 13, currently practice Chi Kung, have done Kung Fu, and use runes for divination. I have started using the I Ching daily and recording the readings. It is very accurate so far. Today I am downloading all the Fu Talismans from your site and organising them on my laptop. Busy, busy, busy lol.

    (Accepting the risk of sounding pedantic for pointing this out) the list of illustrations, list of tables and list of practicums feel incomplete without page numbers. If I want to find for example Figure 10.4, I need to flip through the pages of the book. I admit that even with the page numbers given, i would still need to flip through the pages, but it would be a bit quicker having that information listed beside the other stuff listed :)

      That's something to take up with the book designer. :-) very little of what I wanted and said I wanted got integrated into the final layout. Although to be fair, if it says figure 10.4, first thing I would do is turn to chapter 10, and then all you would have to do is search the figures in that chapter. :-)

    It is so great to learn that you are making an audio version of your I Ching book. When I was reading your book earlier, I was a bit puzzled about your pin-yin spelling of 否 as Fou which I knew it is also pronounced as Pi as in the phrase 否极泰来. Thanks for clarifying all that. I love your I Ching book and the interpretations of the hexagrams you presented there. It provides such a wonderful reference point with the other interpretations I was researching for my videos. Thanks again for the wonderful work on I Ching!!
