- so today were doing a video on how strong is aa in hoi 4, if you know how to use it 1 spaa can shoot down hundreds of planes a day. this tutorial will show you some base divisions used for aa and go over aa doctrines for hoi4. many people refuse to make production lines for aa in hoi4 but its one of the most important things to build if you dont have air superiority, this video will also show you how to get rid of penalties like air superiority and others. so ready to see some hoi4 aa divisions? hope you enjoy this hoi 4 guide

I use AA for all my divisions as AT and AA it can help with denying air superiority my idea is "if I can't have it no one can!"

There was this one time I was just flying, on a roll, 5 ish kills in Air RB. Got fucking pilot sniped by AA. Not even FlaK, just regular bullet AA.
Half of the AA losses in WT are probably people still trying to kamikaze SPAA thinking they can ramkill them.
Don't forget that the aa techs also boost the damage from static aa.

I just played my first game where I had to deal with significant strat bombing. After taking out the Germans and Italians, I switched my focus to the Soviets (as one does). Well Stalin didn't like that, and proceeded to strat bomb the alpine region for some reason. Like he really, REALLY wanted those mountains gone. First time I used static AA, and it worked like a charm! My question is: does radar make static AA more deadly?

That is ridiculous, shooting down 200 planes in a few days? that's completely broken unless I'm missing something... How do you prevent your bombers from dying so fast? Because 200 planes are like 30-60 production each, that's extremely expensive.
If you have air superiority, Fighters intercept last bombers, which obviously means less of them get shot down unless AA is in a battle near where the fighters are. In a big reason it does look so broken it's because like I said a video that was Modern self-propelled hey, when it was normal s p a a then it went down to still like 30 a day 😁

Stiflex- keep in mind this is a cheated save to show that AAA can be useful. He's got the be-all end-all Modern SPAA doing the shooting. In reality you're not going to have anything near that in '39. Earlier techs don't have the sheer stopping power as Modern SPAA, but the point he's making is that AAA does more than simply cutting back on the air superiority penalty.

Hey, here's an idea- what about partisan-crusher divisions with 2 cav, 1 line AAA, and military police attachment? Kick down the rebels while also protecting against air raids?
Used AA for the first time for the Bearer of Artillery Achievment and it worked wonders, making the whole matter really easygoing.
Level 2 AT has 105.6 piercing. The research preceding it adds a 1.2 modifier to the piercing stat. In essence, the AA piercing is only good for dealing with light tanks.
Dude level 2 anti-air gives a pretty basic division between 50 and 60 piercing depending on your researches/army doctrine for your infantry/artillery. Early game thats more than enough to deal with most people's medium tank divisions

One thing I recommend to check on would be look at the Air Attack on regular AA vs Spaa, if Spaa can shoot down 200 and and Air Attack on it is say 40 and then normal AAA has an air attack of 35 it should be relatively close

AAA stands for Anti-aircraft artillery.

Regular AA tech influences province AA too, but nothing other than planes really puts a dent in strat bombers. Problem is those can easily trash infra/ports and therefore supply, so at the end of the day you really do have to do something about enemy air in MP. In SP AA lets you operate outside green skies easily and blast CAS/TAC like nothing, and this stuff is still useful in MP since constant friendly skies all the time is nice but no guarantee..
Like I said in the video if you're worried about strapped bombers you need Fighters, so you're right about that. The most multiplayer servers have completely banned strat bombers
This is why I love going down Operational Integrity doctrine and cranking out modded heavy fighters with super agility. It's the best of several worlds. Range, attack for blapping strat bombers, and +20% agility bonus to counter their size.

i have minimum 1 AA battalion per 20 width in any unit. It allow me to take air supremacy, even if enemy have 2-3 times more fighters than me. One time i won with polish 4k T3 fighters and 1k T3 heavy fighters vs soviet 6k T3 fighters + T2 jet fighters and 5k T3 CAS in less than year on multiplayer. AA really have power!

So would you recommend 1aa per combat width in addition to support aa. If not how would you use it in your templates exactly?
Id recomend 2 spaa or 2 line aa per 20 width, as usa 2 line or spaa with 1 support aa. you only really need to use these with troops atacking where u dont have air superiority
Do AA units also destroy planes flying in the same region when they are standing still? So not executing any orders?
Does this work for ship aa aswell?
Like if you create a DD or Cl variant with maxed out aa, is this going to have the same effect as shown right here?
From what I've seen ship AA is not very good compared to the land AA

I have a question, I am trying to play Communist China against Japan with the focus united front, but it just seems like I cannot defeat them, and some of my AI allies just not moving. Is there any better method to play Communist China? (normal ironman)
To be honest after the new updates it's almost impossible to win as China or any minor in Asia. Even in multiplayer games where the Soviets are allowed to lend lease 40000 guns it's still very difficult to hold until 38 and very few people actually win

I have tried divisions with support company aa, i have tried adding 1 aa battalion, I have tried adding 2 aa battalions, and I have shot down 0 planes in several test games. What am I doing wrong?
The ai doesnt use cas often, aa in units will only engadge planes attacking that division,

Well if aa is behind the plane lvl it does less damnage, like if you have 1936 aa vs 1940.cas it only makes a slight diffrence shooting down maybe 2-4 but 1944 aa would shoot down 20-30
Hi there Dustin. I know this is a late comment but I would like your advice. Been playing as Japan and now invading USA like late 1945. My infantry div got AA artillery under Support line but each time I attack or defend. I saw negative percentage due to enemy air superiority. Is it because my Divison AA stats is too low?
probably, a rule i use is 1 aa per 10 combat width and it should be good

But how about the built AA batteries in provinces? You didnt seem to mention are those any good.
they only work against strat bombers, ive never in my 4500 hours in hoi4 seen any reason to build them. they cost way to much and on average take out 1 or 2 bombers until the ai takes it out. better to build fighters and make ground aa like spaa and aa for divisions. the aa wont shoot down bombers but i have never seen aa batteries work against strat bombers to pay off

@@MrNicoJac I have noticed that the AI will often move their strat bombing to a different province if they detect static AA. I will AA my main areas and leave some sacrificial provinces in the east for Uncle Joe to bomb all day :)
How does standard regional AA fair in the game?
Is it worth build air defense? When I played the number one biggest issue I faced air combat wise was enemies (especially AI) jumping their bombers around everywhere. I would have to spilt my fighter fleet in two and use one to attack while I had to decide whether or not to micro the defensive forces at all. Back when I was playing though (several months to a year or so) I didn't notice much of an impact from maxing out built AA defense in the states/regions/territories (whatever it is). Because of this, I just normally built fighters, got air sup over the combat zones and hard charged airstrips to try to prevent Strat-bombing of my production base. Didn't like how round about that was though.
Any thoughts?
Strap bombers usually Target AA if it's in the eye, it's sometimes better just to do base AA that are in divisions instead of the static
Thanks for the reply, but to clarify a bit about what I was asking, are they in fact worth building? In the games I played, I tended to be using between 400-1000 fighters to be hoping around only to have the bombers switch again.
So then, does this mean that by building 1 level of AA the bombers are interrupted by +/- 10% or something and more levels equate to more? About how many bombers are affected and what is the ratio of effectiveness?
I hope I made the point a bit more clear. Basically, my hope would be that I could just build up max AA and then station 100-250 fighters in each region with the hopes that they would cause decent disruption even when the enemy has significant bomber presence thus, I could in time, slowly build the needed aircraft filling the various wings.
This is the best way I can answer your question, me personally I don't build them. I feel is there too much of a waste of resources to put in which could be used on other things for building, to get really any good effect out of them you need 4-5 per province

what about AA buildings?
They dont really stop strat bombers and Cas and it's not even that effective unless it is a level 5 and even then it still doesn't stop that much sense the AI will actually specifically Target the AA buildings making them useless

Fritz Panzerschreck aww shucks, 😊, the funniest thing in multiplayer games I notice is when I play Germany and they don't see a big plane count they think instantly o this guy's bad, 6 months later (FLEE THE MANGINOT IS FALLING THE GERMAN AA IS TOO STONK!) The reason it's in all caps because someone in the game really starts screaming that in French accent. Probably the funniest thing I ever heard in my life 😂

When you play Germany and have all of europe and some ressource rich countries for some years. The russians (players too) don't stand a chance against my 30 tactical bombers and 100000 fighters :)

Thats exactly what im saying, with anti tank the peircing is a big factor. The first aa can can peirce litght tanks, the second can peirce mediums and the final can peirce heavys, check the peircing of the aa and armor of the tank you want to peirce. If peircing is higher than the armor it can damnage or destroy the tank

I always like using 8 inf, 1 arty and 1 aa as my inf template. Line aa also only needs 2 steel per factory.

Support companies are not AA battallions. They are the companies you can add without increasing combat width.
Well by AA battalions I was referring to you can add an AA in support and then aa in the template if I say you need 2 AA battalions

Your template uses 4 SPAA. Can I assume that is the required amount to minimise penalities? You ask at the end and pose this question but I'm not sure you answered it in the commentary of the videa.
For aa, its 1 aa per 10 combat width to remove the pennalties

You can but if you don't have adequate Fighters and the enemy gets here superiority you will lose the majority of your plans even if you have spaa, spaa will only engage Cass and bombers so it will not shoot down any Fighters at all

If you're using WtT, it's actually disadvantageous to use static AA against Strat spam because the AA falls quicker than the Bombers.

Yeah. The DLCs for HOI4 are often abbreviated into TfV (Together for Victory), DoD (Death or Dishonour), WtT (Waking the Tiger), and the upcoming MtG (Man the Guns).
If you add AA as a support I assume it's going to work decent enough to shoot down any planes going for you in direct combat
If I remember right shoots down a couple but you really want Spaa if you can, if you talk to you about your shooting planes down yes One support AA should take down a few per fight so if you incorporate them in your entire Army well I'll let you imagine that. Now if you want it to remove the air superiority penalty the enemy has a lesson I go by is 2 AA per 20 width, sorry to Ramble On But to answer your first question yes it will shoot down a few planes just remember to add it to multiple divisions if you're looking to cause air casualties

My grandpa was in the immediate vicinity of Kasserine Pass as a support troops officer. Iirc he described a situation where the Germans made a feigned retreat against the brand new green Americans/their tanks and lead them into a valley with AA and AT on all sides and annihilated them basically. Not sure, might need to read up, but it was a disaster he casually mentioned. He was 97 he died March 9th 2017

Maybe you'd revisit this idea. With NSB line AA seems more viable especially now that 21 width is ok.

How does the AA reduction to air penalty scale with the number of AA in the division? No one ever seems to know any formulas
It depends on the cas ground attack vs the divisions are attack, then doctrines will also give bonuses to it but that's the main idea behind it

You forgot to mention that line AA is also much cheaper than AT since it only costs steel.
In my eyes, there is no reason to ever build regular AT.

id say depends, mid - late game if the enemy has the air doctrine maxed out you get a 25-50% debuff depending on how far the air doctrine they are if they have AS

How would aa fare in a unit designed to be an anti tank unit? I thought I'd combine the two, and I don't want to use aa as a support company either.
For context I am playing as Austria, and the whole idea behind this campaign is to be invaded by Germany and then after around a year start being offensive and win the war. Also, its a test for the 1933 vanilla + mod, so that changes research and the like.
TL;DR, do I make an aa unit and an anti tank unit, or do I combine the two?
1 rule i like is aa like at is only 1 width, if your going to make a at or arty division throw 1 aa per 10 width when possible, as austria its complicated sense units with aa will only shoot down planes while in combat.

7+2 its old meta . Arty been nerf so if you not going for superior firepower swap 1 arty from your division for extra 1inf and 1 AT or take 1inf and add 1AT and 1AA ;]

Actually it has piercing values, a medium self-propelled anti-aircraft or 1939 AAA can Pierce light tanks, one thing to try to aim for if playing is Germany to get the flak 88 which is 1943 anti aircraft gun it absolutely shreds any tank it goes up against. Seriously unlock it from start and use it against Soviet heavy KV ones. Did it in multiplayer now that server has stationary anti aircraft guns inside of tank divisions outside of China because he could not pierce the lines in the Germany 😂

Playing with AI, you can just use line AA as AT gun if you don't want to produce and research AT and isn't rich enough to throw medium tank into the mix.

I wonder if we should divide AA into light AA and Heavy AA with light AA tends to be more effective against fighters, cas and infantry. Heavy AA on the other hand is more effective against bombers and armour.

I'm playing the US version of hoi, the only difference between the German in the US version is Hitler is grayed out a little bit and the diplomacy screen. Otherwise it's the public version outside of Germany
