I always wondered what IBM was doing to keep the light on, considering they no longer dominated the personal computer market and didn't know they had a virtual monopoly on serves for corporations.
1) Linux Mint and Fedora definitely aren't sever distros, they are the total opposite 2) IBM bought Red Hat mainly for Openshift, which they hoped will become the de facto solution for enterprise kubernetes (it didn't) 3) Google and Amazon most probably do not use RHEL, they have their own distros 4) RH recently kind of made the source code of RHEL closed source, causing a big drama in OSS community. They made that move probably because OCP doesn't make as much money as expected and they want to force the users that use free alternatives such as Rocky or Alma to pay for a subscription.

Openshift is used in really big orgs but the complexity of of OCP it's absolutely not recommended for anyone except big corporations with big developer/DevOps teams. How do i know I work with it 😑
@@KingKevin108distribution is essentially a "ready-to-use" operating system. Linux is a lot like IKEA, you can mix and match to build an OS with various component, defaults, and interfaces. Mint is a variant based on Ubuntu, which is a variant based on Debian. Mint is mainly intended for desktop user - a core change they do is removing the Snap apps which is a way of installing apps that's good for servers but lags behind the Flatpak method for desktop GUI apps. Fedora however is upstream of CentOS which is upstream of Red Hat Enterprise Linux or RHEL. Fedora is quite community driven, though Red Hat has an at-arms-length control of the project. Essentially, they do their own things, but RH can influence them, and ultimately things that are tested on Fedora can make it to CentOS, which can eventually make it to RHEL that requires much more stability given that each versions are expected to habe 8 years or so of long-term service life.

We had to use IBM BlueCloud, and the low quality of tech support, uncontrilled nerwork settings, company-wide nerwoe network outage twice in 2 years, lasting over a day (yes, internal IBM corporate), and so many other anecdotes, simply made everything very difficult.
I'm confused by this video. Firstly IBM drops the ball. Then they own all the servers. Then they drop the ball again. They are still Big Blue. But 'Big' means 'Legacy' And Blue means Red. Something tells me, they aint never coming back ...
Kyndryl is now operating on it's own as a stand-alone publicly traded company just last year. It's IBM's server and infrastructure services division. Great video....most people don't realize how broad and sweeping IBM's reach really is.
Fedora is the consumer version of Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL). You can still use RHEL as a consumer for free. Enterprise versions of Linux distro are very expensive because of the support that is purchased with the servers.

I worked for IBM for 20+ years, I'm pretty familiar with its internal systems and processes as a result I would bet IBM will stuff Red Hat up even if the product is OK IBM will make it a nightmare to use and maintain even while charging a fortune for support.
If that happens, then what exactly did IBM buy? Part of the RH value prop for IBM is extended goodwill to customers that don’t have a good relationship with them anymore. In fact, that’s probably why they overpaid.
While they made widely unliked changes to their development process(I.E. stopping the production of CENTOS), RHEL is still open source. To quote them: "Despite what’s currently being said about Red Hat, we make our hard work readily accessible to non-customers. Red Hat uses and will always use an open source development model. When we find a bug or write a feature, we contribute our code upstream." According to the June 26th RedHat website press post I quoted from above they have a CENTOS stream git repository which is where they publish the open source modifications to RHEL. @@kevalan1042it's not quite close-sourced. Basically, you can still obtain the codes through their portal, but doing more with it is against their TOS which would allow them to revoke your license. Essentially, it passes the bare minimum of GPL in that you can obtain the source and then modify it... but they can essentially retaliate and terminate your license (if not outright sue for using it if you're big like Oracle). CentOS is still open-source and where they want collaboration to happen. It's just that they know people only pay for one RHEL license and shuffle it around as well as having other companies borrow their work on RHEL, and they don't want that. It's against the spirit of OSS but it's technically within the bounds of the license and most users don't need RHEL beyond the free 20 license they gave to hundreds of thekr SKUs, so they really can either use RHEL, pay if they need more licenses, use CentOS or Fedora, or outright use other distro like Debian.

Red Hat is not the OS used in most websites, absolutely nobody will pay support fees to run a website on it, it's totally unnecessary. 96% of webservers don't use Red Hat, they use Ubuntu, Debian or Centos. Red Hat have 1% or less of market share on Linux even on servers. What they have is 30% of enterprise Linux market share, you basically can only run Oracle in Red Hat or Oracle Linux (Red Hat with a Oracle logo on it), companies who run Linux pay for the support. Google and Amazon don't use Red Hat too, Google have they own distro for desktop and they use a customized kernel for most services they don't need RH support. Companies that stay with IBM is because of the Mainframe business and this business is almost totally based around zOS. And Dell and HPE lead that market with Lenovo a little behind.
IBM went a different route than say Motorola or Nokia after falling out from public front markets. IBM may have disappeared from the consumer market but they have not shrunk or lost power by any level.
No, that is absolutely not true: IBM is just a shadow of what they once were, most servers today are not from IBM anymore and their mainframes are a relict of the past, they have initiated a huge marketing offensive though, so don't confuses that with "back in business" and "relevant again", they lost a huge amount of profitability in the last year and looks like they want to squeeze RedHat dry for all it is going to give them.
I remember in the 90s and naughties when red hat was a powerhouse in the personal IE individual Linux space. The most go-to distro of Linux, to learn about Linux. Then RHeL went commercial. They will never go back.
I do data centre field repairs for Dell and there was my first experience working with IBM-collaborated products. They make some seriously cool tech and still own a shit load of IP that leads to valuable business oriented products. IBM don’t have much rack space in most of the data centres I visit where it’s mostly your big name vendors like Dell HP Lenovo Cisco etc populating most of the available units
IBM themselves actually use Lenovo servers internally. I've done ITAM/ITAD for IBM and they exclusively use Lenovo Thinkpads and MacBooks for their laptops as well
@@TacoNissan Yep, and they suck. They're much more heavier and harder to work on than the Supermicros they used to use. Plus, their racks are all designed for Supermicro servers so you gotta reroute all the power and network connections when switching over, its a pain in the ass. I hope IBM goes bankrupt.
@@TacoNissan Probably a holdover from the time when Lenovo bought a bunch of their most recognizable product lines and brands from IBM (like ThinkPad, and ThinkCenter). The 2 companies have a lot of crossover going on.
Good point. I think market cap only measures half of the equation - how much shareholders value a company's stock. The other half is in what the actual product can do. It seems that with public cloud seemingly losing steam (well not really) because of unforeseen costs, most companies will likely settle for hybrid cloud. Not the most exciting market segment, but that's where companies will still spend their top dollars.

Yeah, IBM has not innovated anything new in decades, they are a very very old company now and like very old people, they do less and less, till they fade into irrelevance. IBM had their day in the sun before most of us were even born. You can see the state of innovation by IBM still trying to push their very expensive mainframes, while we now use thousands of app / web / cloud servers for the same, it has many advantages, redundancy is one of them, cost is another and not being in a very pricey vendor lock-in with IBM another. ;-)

As per my understanding IBM took over redhat because they thought with the rise of microservices Openshift will become the defacto solution for enterprise which it didn't there are options in the market. So that's why now they are using tactics like closing out the code so they can extract more money. I guess there is always vanilla Kubernetis and Debian Stable 😂😂
Linux Mint and Fedora are community based distros, though Fedora is very much tied to Red Hat (Fedora is used as a basis for CentOS Stream which is then used as a basis for Red Hat) I think as standalone enterprise Linux distros it is just Ubuntu, Suse and Red Hat. Where as far as I know most others are based of Red Hat. But with Red Hat no longer having its source code publicly available it will be interesting if they can keep being bug for bug compatible with Red Hat.
Since my company runs IBM servers, when IBM bought Redhat, I was happy. When IBM alters server hardware, Red hat Linux gets the code changes. It is the best of both worlds for me.
Yeah, Red Hat is BIG. Quite a lot of the technology used in the Linux stack, or even the code in the kernel itself, comes from Red Hat. And that's why they're tolerated when they're definitely goint against the spirit of the open-source community in an attempt to stifle Oracle, SUSE, and Canonical. It is to the point that Oracle, SUSE, and a few others have banded to create an org that's basically "Enterprise Linux that isn't RHEL." I think there's a genuine threat there and that RedHat have pushed the community and users to the farthest they can be pushed for the next 5 years before some real revolt occurs. The matter is that no one else have the same level of certification, compliance, and support as Red Hat, and most business are already on Red Hat of some form and that it's more of a hassle to migrate outside of the family than to fork out cash or use the free RH CentOS upstream. But... many home, hobbyist, and casual users are moving to Debian and that's a real threat because people tend to bring what they use at home to work if they could help it.

IBM dominates the Mainfram business and that is responsible for about every major transaction there is, incluiding, airline tickets, all of VISA's transactions, tons of on-line retail transactions, etc. etc. etc. Why do you think it only takes 10 seconds to buy gas or food...becuase IBM mainframes are doing the work, very quickly. As for RH/OCP the problem is, it is not easy to configure and use, but there are many very large companies running RH, so there are a lot of opportunties for IBM. IBM will, I hope, solve the issue outlined in this video.

RHEL isn't nearly as widespread as it was just a couple of years ago. With the stuff they pulled on CentOS, a lot of community fragmented and either stuck with IBM's crap or diversified to Rocky/Alma or Debian/Ubuntu. Also, RHEL isn't the Linux of choice necessarily when implementing Oracle stacks. Implementation partners have more incentive to push for Oracle Linux, and customers have a stronger desire for a more integrated system for their Oracle stacks.
I’d like to see the sources for the REHL market share. I manage aws accounts that are spending north of 50 million a month and have very little REHL usage, it’s almost all Ubuntu server

Simple answer - top 500 fortune companies can’t hire good engeneers(devops/sre/bare metal admins). Long answer - better to pay to transfer responsibility. It’s same with consulting - manager work is to find someone who will be responsible for their decisions. Of course Linux distros may have designed vulnerabilities, but for non govsec/core fintech projects it’s ok (in such projects it’s pain in us to update something or add new dependency, so probability of being atacked is close to zero)
Doesn't RedHat own Ansible ? And if they do then I don't see Red Hat or IBM being in any trouble anytime soon . Ansible is used by Google and Amazon as well as many other companies that have their own data centers . Sure they could use Chef or Puppet but if companies wanted to use them they would have already.

People don't know by now in the 21st century after 35 years that LINUX IS NOT AN OPERATING SYSTEM Linux is a kernel that many operating systems use. And, I do not believe more than 96% of servers worldwide are running linix-based operating systems. That figure must have erroneously included OpenBSD, FreeBSD, and other BSDs as well as other Unix operating systems.

Sorry, but that is exactly what it means. It *can* crash and contains newer versions of software which can contain newer bugs. Not to say that “stable” is perfect but you have a higher risk of (weird) issues. But indeed, the unstable release can also fix problems making it better so the name is somewhat incorrect. Also note that some fixes are backported to Stable especially if security related.
@@edwinkm2016 Because all systems become more and more stable, the more you fix bugs, but don't add any new features or changes, that makes systems instable, that is just the nature of introducing new unknown variables. If you don't change it, you have a guarantee for stability. I have used Debian Stable and Ubuntu LTS and they are super rock solid, never fails, runs for years if you want to, incredible performance.
I think you should have done a better job of explaining the difference between various Linux distributions to better explain what is the value of RedHat. Basically it comes down to the stability of releases, and as you said, support. Most companies do not need the most recent improvement of the GNU/Linux ecosystem. They are happy to be years behind the most recent updates and features, as long as security and stability are maintained.
@@nigratruo There is no business that I know of using Debian or Ubuntu LTS as operating system for a web server backend (high traffic website / web service). I can only envision some embedded devices using that. Just my experience.
@@lilhaxxor Huh? Then you don't live in the year 2023, Ubuntu LTS server is now used by most companies, it has many advantages and has been positioned as the Linux cloud OS many years ago. So what do you think they use?? RHEL? Certainly not, too expensive and nobody in their right mind would ever use that for a webserver. Then CentOS? CentOS does no longer exist, it got terminated and is now a rolling release unstable distro, IBM / RedHat did this in order to force customers to pay big bucks for RHEL instead, but nobody is using that. Rocky? Alma? Maybe, it is the replacement for what CentOS used to be, but the shift to Debian DEB package system based distros world wide has started many years ago and RedHat based RPM has less and less used over the last years. The reason for that is that apt / DPKG is just more advanced and has allowed direct installs from the internet more than 15 years ago. Also, RHEL used to be the only really enterprise grade stable Linux distro long ago. Now most distros are like that and they are incredibly secure and stable, 100% enterprise grade, so it does not pay to pay for RHEL anymore.
This video is not correct, red hat is just another distro. Every company I have worked at uses a basic plain Jane Debian with nothing added to it but ssh and some drivers and a c++ compiler.
IBM failure regarding Red Hat: Paywalling Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Well F-U IBM, I have been Red Hat user since 2000 but then I went with Open SUSE. I hope IBM treat Red Hat like Thinkpads, it will flourish after IBM sold them to some other company, leaving IBM kick their own feet.
red hat is no longer one of the popular OS in Linus space, people nowadays are more comfortable using lower cost alternatives such as Ubuntu or centOS, especially on public cloud environments where the support of OS is not an issue no matter which OS you use. IBM’s decision acquiring Redhat is prove wrong and IBM is no longer a tech giant any more.
If you want to say that IBM is powerful you need data, just saying that "corporate prefer red hat" means nothing, show me the data or it's just a baseless opinion, and as it's glorifying IBM, is probably wrong...those who needed to work on IBM software will understand...

Supemicro is in 3rd place after Dell and HPE for rackmount servers in the data center. Lenovo is barely in the business.

No, that is absolutely not true: IBM is just a shadow of what they once were, most servers today are not from IBM anymore and their mainframes are a relict of the past, they have initiated a huge marketing offensive though, so don't confuses that with "back in business" and "relevant again", they lost a huge amount of profitability in the last year and looks like they want to squeeze RedHat dry for all it is going to give them.
I remember in the 90s and naughties when red hat was a powerhouse in the personal IE individual Linux space. The most go-to distro of Linux, to learn about Linux. Then RHeL went commercial. They will never go back.

I do data centre field repairs for Dell and there was my first experience working with IBM-collaborated products. They make some seriously cool tech and still own a shit load of IP that leads to valuable business oriented products. IBM don’t have much rack space in most of the data centres I visit where it’s mostly your big name vendors like Dell HP Lenovo Cisco etc populating most of the available units
IBM themselves actually use Lenovo servers internally. I've done ITAM/ITAD for IBM and they exclusively use Lenovo Thinkpads and MacBooks for their laptops as well
@@TacoNissan Yep, and they suck. They're much more heavier and harder to work on than the Supermicros they used to use. Plus, their racks are all designed for Supermicro servers so you gotta reroute all the power and network connections when switching over, its a pain in the ass. I hope IBM goes bankrupt.
@@TacoNissan Probably a holdover from the time when Lenovo bought a bunch of their most recognizable product lines and brands from IBM (like ThinkPad, and ThinkCenter). The 2 companies have a lot of crossover going on.

I think market cap only measures half of the equation - how much shareholders value a company's stock.
The other half is in what the actual product can do.
It seems that with public cloud seemingly losing steam (well not really) because of unforeseen costs, most companies will likely settle for hybrid cloud.
Not the most exciting market segment, but that's where companies will still spend their top dollars.
Market cap really isn't everything. AMD has a higher market cap although intel has far more vast resources and CPU market share

Yeah, IBM has not innovated anything new in decades, they are a very very old company now and like very old people, they do less and less, till they fade into irrelevance. IBM had their day in the sun before most of us were even born. You can see the state of innovation by IBM still trying to push their very expensive mainframes, while we now use thousands of app / web / cloud servers for the same, it has many advantages, redundancy is one of them, cost is another and not being in a very pricey vendor lock-in with IBM another. ;-)

As per my understanding IBM took over redhat because they thought with the rise of microservices Openshift will become the defacto solution for enterprise which it didn't there are options in the market.

Linux Mint and Fedora are community based distros, though Fedora is very much tied to Red Hat (Fedora is used as a basis for CentOS Stream which is then used as a basis for Red Hat)
I think as standalone enterprise Linux distros it is just Ubuntu, Suse and Red Hat. Where as far as I know most others are based of Red Hat. But with Red Hat no longer having its source code publicly available it will be interesting if they can keep being bug for bug compatible with Red Hat.

Since my company runs IBM servers, when IBM bought Redhat, I was happy. When IBM alters server hardware, Red hat Linux gets the code changes. It is the best of both worlds for me.
Yeah, Red Hat is BIG. Quite a lot of the technology used in the Linux stack, or even the code in the kernel itself, comes from Red Hat. And that's why they're tolerated when they're definitely goint against the spirit of the open-source community in an attempt to stifle Oracle, SUSE, and Canonical. It is to the point that Oracle, SUSE, and a few others have banded to create an org that's basically "Enterprise Linux that isn't RHEL."
I think there's a genuine threat there and that RedHat have pushed the community and users to the farthest they can be pushed for the next 5 years before some real revolt occurs. The matter is that no one else have the same level of certification, compliance, and support as Red Hat, and most business are already on Red Hat of some form and that it's more of a hassle to migrate outside of the family than to fork out cash or use the free RH CentOS upstream. But... many home, hobbyist, and casual users are moving to Debian and that's a real threat because people tend to bring what they use at home to work if they could help it.
Watching an IBM server nowadays reminds me of the bulky white and lavender Altima/NetVista computers. They’re beautiful. Takes me back.

IBM dominates the Mainfram business and that is responsible for about every major transaction there is, incluiding, airline tickets, all of VISA's transactions, tons of on-line retail transactions, etc. etc. etc. Why do you think it only takes 10 seconds to buy gas or food...becuase IBM mainframes are doing the work, very quickly. As for RH/OCP the problem is, it is not easy to configure and use, but there are many very large companies running RH, so there are a lot of opportunties for IBM. IBM will, I hope, solve the issue outlined in this video.

RHEL isn't nearly as widespread as it was just a couple of years ago. With the stuff they pulled on CentOS, a lot of community fragmented and either stuck with IBM's crap or diversified to Rocky/Alma or Debian/Ubuntu. Also, RHEL isn't the Linux of choice necessarily when implementing Oracle stacks. Implementation partners have more incentive to push for Oracle Linux, and customers have a stronger desire for a more integrated system for their Oracle stacks.

Simple answer - top 500 fortune companies can’t hire good engeneers(devops/sre/bare metal admins). Long answer - better to pay to transfer responsibility. It’s same with consulting - manager work is to find someone who will be responsible for their decisions. Of course Linux distros may have designed vulnerabilities, but for non govsec/core fintech projects it’s ok (in such projects it’s pain in us to update something or add new dependency, so probability of being atacked is close to zero)

Sorry, but that is exactly what it means. It *can* crash and contains newer versions of software which can contain newer bugs. Not to say that “stable” is perfect but you have a higher risk of (weird) issues. But indeed, the unstable release can also fix problems making it better so the name is somewhat incorrect. Also note that some fixes are backported to Stable especially if security related.
@@edwinkm2016 Because all systems become more and more stable, the more you fix bugs, but don't add any new features or changes, that makes systems instable, that is just the nature of introducing new unknown variables. If you don't change it, you have a guarantee for stability. I have used Debian Stable and Ubuntu LTS and they are super rock solid, never fails, runs for years if you want to, incredible performance.
I think you should have done a better job of explaining the difference between various Linux distributions to better explain what is the value of RedHat.
Basically it comes down to the stability of releases, and as you said, support. Most companies do not need the most recent improvement of the GNU/Linux ecosystem. They are happy to be years behind the most recent updates and features, as long as security and stability are maintained.
Yes, that is why people use Debian Stable and Ubuntu LTS, they are enterprise grade rock solid.

So what do you think they use?? RHEL? Certainly not, too expensive and nobody in their right mind would ever use that for a webserver. Then CentOS? CentOS does no longer exist, it got terminated and is now a rolling release unstable distro, IBM / RedHat did this in order to force customers to pay big bucks for RHEL instead, but nobody is using that. Rocky? Alma? Maybe, it is the replacement for what CentOS used to be, but the shift to Debian DEB package system based distros world wide has started many years ago and RedHat based RPM has less and less used over the last years. The reason for that is that apt / DPKG is just more advanced and has allowed direct installs from the internet more than 15 years ago. Also, RHEL used to be the only really enterprise grade stable Linux distro long ago. Now most distros are like that and they are incredibly secure and stable, 100% enterprise grade, so it does not pay to pay for RHEL anymore.

IBM failure regarding Red Hat: Paywalling Red Hat Enterprise Linux. Well F-U IBM, I have been Red Hat user since 2000 but then I went with Open SUSE. I hope IBM treat Red Hat like Thinkpads, it will flourish after IBM sold them to some other company, leaving IBM kick their own feet.
