Well, only the Swedes who do eat it do that. The rest of us just avoid it because the biohazard stench is not worth the flavour. We have tons of actually delicious pickled herring, like in mustard sauce, onion, skagenröra, and much more. Why bother with fermented herring when you have all that and all sorts of delicious smoked and cooked fish. Poor cats...
A few years ago my mother was on an adventure trip through South America. The food was only available in cans. But the question of whether the cans were still good was still raised, as all the travelers ended up suffering from diarrhea. My mother had told me that there were a lot of stray dogs and cats. So I advised her to offer some of every can she wanted to eat to the cats first. Not to the dogs, because they eat everything, but to the cats, who don't eat anything spoiled, no matter how hungry they are. My mother did this every day and she was spared diarrhea. As a thank you, she shared her cans with the cats.

@ well… the taste is not horrible, considering being a Swede and very used to regular pickled herring (which I know is difficult for most non-Scandinavians) for Christmas, Easter and midsummer. But the smell is the worst I ever experienced. The party where it was served took place in a rented large university restaurant, at evening time after all students and teachers had gone home. To get to the restaurant we first had to go through a few corridors. The smell hit our noses already when we entered the building, far away from the actual party. It is served with potatoes and a special bread from Norrland, the northern part of Sweden. Having these additionals is the only way to get it in your mouth. The extreme smell is the reason to why you should only eat surströmming outdoors. And opening the tin cans with this herring has to be done quite far away from where you eat. Just remember: it is ROTTEN herring. The word “sur” in “surströmming” means SOUR. And strömming is herring. So, it is “sour herring” directly translated. Yes, it’s vile. Just watch any UA-cam video searching for “surströmming” and you will see about the same reaction. Especially with people who are not from northern Sweden.
I tried surströmming once. And once was quite enough. The kitties were patient to return to the table. They knew they would get their cat-treats eventually ... so cute!
Not so surprising. Cats are very picky about food being fresh - which is probably an evolutionary adaption to prevent getting sick. Surstromming is heavily fermented, so basically partly decomposed. It's certainly an aquired taste for humans to say the least, but I don't think cats and dogs experience smells the same way we do. Our sense of smell is pitiful so we live in different worlds in terms of smells. If you presented this to an animal adapted to be a scavenger, they would probably find the smell much more appetizing. Scavengers usually have much better adapted protections against food poisoning, so they don't mind a little smell of decomposition.
That's a good point. Hyenas might love this. Can someone from Sweden send Kevin Richardson a can? He can compare the reaction between lions and hyenas.
